Later, she developed a serious neurological condition."

He explained that his father had become deeply involved in trying to understand her illness.

He studied her symptoms and became convinced that some of the biological processes involved might be connected to aging.

Eventually, he began exploring an experimental treatment that he hoped would improve her condition.

I listened without sitting down.

I wanted to understand the history.

But I also wanted Daniel to stop speaking as if the history excused what was happening to me.

"What happened to her?"

His voice became quieter.

"She died."

I looked at the woman in the photograph.

She had been lying in that hospital bed while Daniel's father stood beside her.

I wondered what she had known.

I wondered whether she had understood the treatment she was receiving.

Then I remembered the message written on the back.

"What about the other three?"

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

"My father continued the research after Evelyn died. He believed he could learn from other participants."

"Women who looked like her?"

He hesitated.

"That was part of what he considered when selecting them."

Dr. Reeves spoke before Daniel could continue.

"Physical resemblance by itself is not a scientifically sound basis for selecting participants in medical research."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand that now."

I turned toward him.

"Then explain what happened to those women."

He looked down at his hands.

"All three suffered serious medical difficulties. Two eventually died. The third survived, but she continued to have health problems."

I felt my knees weaken.

I reached for the back of the nearest chair.

Daniel took a step toward me.

I lifted my hand.

"Don't."

He stopped immediately.

I looked at him.

"How long have you known about this?"

He didn't answer.

I asked again.

"When did you learn what happened to them?"

His silence was more painful than anything he could have said.

Finally, he admitted that he had known before we married.

I stared at him.

Before the wedding.

Before the vows.

Before he stood beside me and promised to share my life.

He had known that his father's research had been associated with serious medical harm.

He had known about the earlier participants.

And he had still allowed me to believe that our marriage was simply an unexpected love story.

I felt something collapse inside me.

"Did you choose me because I look like Evelyn?"

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Not only because of that."

I almost wished he had lied.

His answer confirmed what I had been afraid to ask.

I sat down.

For a moment, I could hear nothing but the faint sound of traffic outside the building.

Then I asked him how he had found me.

He said we had met at a charity fundraiser supporting retired teachers.

I remembered the event.

I had given a short speech about literacy programs and the importance of helping children discover books.

Daniel had approached me afterward.

He had listened carefully, asked about my work, and made me laugh.

I had gone home thinking I had met an unusually thoughtful man.

Now he admitted that he had seen my photograph in a database connected to the research program before we met.

He had learned details about me before introducing himself.

My age.

My career.

My family background.

Even some of the things I liked.

I remembered the flowers he had brought me.

The recipes he had learned.

The books he had somehow known I loved.

Some of those details had come from our conversations.

Others, apparently, had not.

"Did you know all those things before we met?" I asked.

"Some of them."

"How much?"

He looked away.

"I don't know exactly."

That answer frightened me.

I had thought he remembered me because he listened.

Now I wondered how much of our courtship had been shaped by information he had obtained without my knowledge.

"Did you ever genuinely love me?"

Daniel began to cry.

"Yes."

I wanted to believe him.

Part of me still did.

But love could not explain why he had hidden the research.

Love could not explain why he had allowed me to sign documents I didn't understand.

And love certainly could not explain the drink.

I asked him why he had continued the program.

He said he had inherited his father's research files and become determined to find a better outcome than his father had achieved.

He believed newer technology might succeed where the earlier work had failed.

Dr. Cole had encouraged him.

The clinic's equipment and methods, Daniel said, offered possibilities that had not existed during his father's work.

Then Daniel had met me.

At first, he had been interested because of my resemblance to Evelyn and the information in the research database.

But he insisted that his feelings had changed after he heard me speak.

"I didn't expect to fall in love with you," he said.

I looked at him.

"Yet you did."

"Yes."

"And when you fell in love with me, you stopped the research?"

He said nothing.

That was the answer.

I felt sick.

Daniel explained that the clinic had conducted screening tests after our marriage.

He said the results had appeared to show certain medical concerns that made me a possible candidate for the program.

I interrupted him.

"My regular doctor said I was healthy."

He lowered his head.

Three weeks earlier, he had discovered discrepancies between my original medical results and the records used to justify my enrollment.

The initial screening had not shown the condition that the program later claimed I had.

I stared at him.

"So the records were wrong?"

"It appears that they were."

"Then why did you let this continue?"

He said Dr. Cole had warned him that changing the routine without medical supervision could create additional complications.

I looked at Dr. Reeves.

He shook his head slightly.

"That claim would need to be examined. It does not justify giving someone an experimental substance without properly informed consent."

I turned back to Daniel.

"You knew I was exhausted."

"Yes."

"You knew I was having trouble remembering things."

"Yes."

"And you kept giving me that drink."

He lowered his face.

I waited for him to deny it.

I waited for him to say he had never meant to hurt me.

Instead, he stood there crying.

I realized that he had spent months making decisions about my health while allowing me to believe that I was simply experiencing the ordinary difficulties of getting older.

He had seen my confusion.

He had heard my questions.

He had watched me struggle.

And he had continued.

I no longer cared whether he believed his intentions were good.

I wanted my life back.

I turned to Dr. Reeves.

"I want a complete independent medical assessment. And I want every record connected to my enrollment reviewed."

He nodded.

"We can begin arranging that."

I looked at Daniel.

"Give him every document you have."

"Margaret, please let me explain—"

"No."

My voice sounded steadier than I felt.

"You have had months to explain."

He reached toward me, then stopped when he saw my expression.

I asked whether he had copies of the research records.

He admitted that he had copied several documents after discovering the discrepancies.

But he had not reported them.

He claimed Dr. Cole had threatened to exclude him from decisions about my participation if he interfered with the program.

I stared at him in disbelief.

"You were afraid of losing your position?"

"No. I was afraid of what would happen to you."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

He had no answer.

I stood.

For the first time since I had married Daniel, I wasn't waiting for him to decide what should happen next.

I was making the decision myself.

I asked Dr. Reeves to help preserve the laboratory findings and arrange an examination with an independent physician.

Then I took out my telephone and called Helen.

She answered immediately.

"Margaret? What's wrong?"

I tried to speak, but my voice broke.

"I need you to come and get me."

She didn't ask me to explain everything over the phone.

She didn't tell me to calm down.

She simply asked where I was.

When I gave her the address, she said she was coming.

I ended the call and sat down again.

Daniel remained across the room.

He looked at me as if he wanted to say something that would return us to the life we had shared before that morning.

But there was no sentence that could make the photograph disappear.

There was no apology that could turn the research records into ordinary paperwork.

And there was no explanation that could give me back the months I had spent questioning my own mind.

Helen arrived shortly afterward.

She came into the office, saw my face, and crossed the room without hesitation.

I stood and let her embrace me.

For a few moments, I couldn't stop crying.

She held me until I could breathe normally again.

Then she looked at Daniel.

She didn't shout at him.

She didn't ask him to defend himself.

She simply turned back to me.

"You're coming home with me."

I nodded.

Daniel stood near the door.

"Margaret, please. I know I've made mistakes."

I looked at him.

"Mistakes are when you forget to buy milk. This was my health."

He flinched.

I didn't feel pleased.

I felt empty.

Helen helped me gather my belongings, and Dr. Reeves promised to contact us about the next steps.

Before we left, I looked once more at the photograph.

Evelyn Mercer lay in the hospital bed.

Daniel's father stood beside her.

The handwritten warning remained on the back.

I had once believed that marrying Daniel meant I had found someone who would stand beside me when life became difficult.

Now I understood that I had been placed inside a story that began long before I knew his name.

And I had nearly become another woman whose questions were ignored.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Records Daniel Brought to Us Revealed How Much He Had Known, and Why My Symptoms Had Been Written Down Without Anyone Listening

Dr. Reeves opened the door only after I asked him to.
