he said.

I didn't answer.

There were too many things he might have meant.

The drink.

The research.

The lies.

The way he had treated my questions as inconveniences.

An apology could not cover all of them at once.

When the boxes were ready, Helen carried one toward the entrance.

Daniel asked me to stay for a moment.

I agreed, but I remained standing.

He looked down at his hands.

"The trial has been suspended."

"I know."

"Dr. Cole has been removed while the review continues."

"I know that, too."

He seemed unsure what to say next.

Then he told me that he had begun cooperating fully with the people examining the records.

I looked at him.

"Good."

He nodded.

"I should have done that earlier."

"Yes."

He swallowed.

"There are things I should have told you before we married."

I waited.

He said he had spent years trying to make sense of his father's research.

He had inherited the files and felt responsible for finding an outcome his father had never achieved.

He believed the newer program could succeed where the earlier work had failed.

At first, he had approached me because of my resemblance to Evelyn and the information in the research database.

He had known about my age and background before we met.

He had believed that the screening might identify a condition relevant to the program.

Then he had fallen in love with me.

He repeated that part as if it might change what came before it.

I believed that his feelings had become real.

I had seen enough of him to know that affection could exist alongside selfishness and fear.

But genuine feelings did not erase the choices he had made.

"You loved me," I said.

"Yes."

"And you still kept this from me."

He looked down.

"Yes."

I thought about the months when I had trusted him to explain my own symptoms.

I thought about the way he had answered for me in front of other people.

I thought about the dark bottle and the cup beside my chair.

"Daniel, what were you waiting for?"

He looked at me.

"The right moment."

I almost laughed.

There had been so many moments.

The first time I asked about the bottle.

The morning I woke feeling unwell.

The afternoon Helen suggested I see my own doctor.

The evening he spoke about treatment schedules without explaining what they meant.

Every one of those moments could have been the right time to tell me.

Instead, he had waited.

"When would that moment have come?" I asked.

He struggled to answer.

"When I had something positive to show you."

I looked at him carefully.

"And if the research never produced anything positive?"

He turned away.

He had no answer.

I understood then that he had been waiting for a result that might make his decisions easier to defend.

He wanted the research to justify the risk.

He wanted success to turn secrecy into protection.

And he wanted the future to excuse what he had done in the present.

But I had been living in that present.

I had been the person drinking the milk.

I had been the person losing confidence in her memory.

I had been the person whose questions were dismissed.

My life was not a test he could keep running until he found a result he liked.

I stepped closer, though I did not touch him.

"You were trying to make things right for your father."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I wanted to help people."

"I believe you wanted that."

He looked surprised.

I continued.

"But you stopped seeing me as a person who could make her own choices."

He lowered his head.

"I know."

I believed that he regretted what he had done.

I also believed he had loved me in his own way.

Both things could be true.

But neither changed the fact that he had placed his own judgment above my right to understand what was happening to my body.

I told him I wanted to end the marriage.

He looked at me as if he had expected another chance to explain himself.

"Margaret, please."

I shook my head.

"I can't go back to the way things were."

"We could start again."

"On what?"

He didn't answer.

"Trust cannot be rebuilt by asking me to forget what happened."

He began crying.

I felt sad for him.

I did not feel responsible for comforting him.

That was a new feeling for me.

For months, I had worried about how Daniel would react when I questioned him.

I had softened my words to avoid upsetting him.

I had accepted explanations because challenging them seemed cruel.

Now I understood that his distress did not obligate me to surrender my decision.

"If you want to make something right," I said, "cooperate fully with the review. Tell them everything you know, even when it makes you look bad."

He nodded.

"I will."

"Then let that be what you do for me."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"I really did love you."

I believed him.

But love had not been enough to protect me.

Love had not made him honest.

And love had not given me the information I needed to make my own choices.

I picked up the last small box.

Helen was waiting by the front door.

I walked toward her.

At the threshold, I paused and looked back at Daniel.

I did not hate him.

I did not wish him harm.

I simply no longer wanted to be his wife.

I left the house with Helen beside me.

This time, I didn't look back.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The First Morning Without Daniel, I Realized How Much of My Life I Had Spent Asking Permission to Trust Myself

After meeting Laura, I stopped thinking of the photograph as something mysterious.
