There are more."

The dishwasher was full of clean dishes.

Mom had apparently stayed up late enough to finish the cleaning after dinner.

I opened the door and stared at the neat rows of plates.

There were cups on the top rack, bowls arranged underneath, and utensils separated in their little compartments.

It looked like the work of someone who had spent years making sure nobody else had to think about the mess they left behind.

Daniel stared at it, too.

Then he began unloading the machine.

I didn't thank him.

Not because I wasn't grateful, but because putting away clean dishes was a normal responsibility, not a special favor.

I made coffee while he finished.

We found eggs, bread, cereal, and fruit in the kitchen.

There was enough food for everyone.

Nobody needed to prepare a complicated breakfast, and nobody needed to go without eating.

We simply weren't going to organize the entire morning around Susan's expectations.

Daniel toasted bread for himself.

I poured coffee into two mugs.

Then I looked through the glass doors toward the deck.

The geraniums were still sitting beside the steps.

Their bright red flowers looked strangely out of place there.

Mom had arranged them along the railing for a reason.

She wanted to see them whenever she looked out at the water.

She wanted the deck to feel like hers.

I stepped outside.

The morning air was cool against my face, and the lake looked pale beneath the first light.

Daniel came out behind me.

He looked at the wooden boxes.

"Let's put them back."

I nodded.

We lifted the first planter together.

It was heavier than I expected.

The soil shifted slightly as we carried it toward the railing, and I held my end carefully so none of it spilled.

We placed it where Mom had originally put it.

Then we returned for the next one.

There were no speeches.

No dramatic declarations.

Just two adults carrying flower boxes across a deck because we had finally realized that our silence had helped create the problem.

When the last planter was in place, I stepped back.

The geraniums looked right where they belonged.

I could almost imagine Mom standing there with her watering can, checking each plant and adjusting the leaves.

Daniel leaned against the railing.

"My mother isn't going to like this."

"She doesn't have to like it."

He looked at the flowers again.

"I should have said something yesterday."

"Yes."

He accepted the answer.

That mattered more to me than hearing another long explanation.

The screen door opened behind us.

Mom stood in the doorway wearing her blue robe.

Her silver hair was loose around her shoulders, and she looked as though she had only just gotten out of bed.

She noticed the planters immediately.

For one brief moment, her face brightened.

Then she looked at us, and the concern returned.

"What are you two doing out here?"

"Putting your flowers back," I said.

She glanced toward the lake.

"Susan told me they were in her way."

"I heard her."

Mom looked uncomfortable.

"She likes sitting there in the morning."

"Then she can sit somewhere else."

My mother gave me a warning look.

She had spent so much of her life avoiding conflict that even a reasonable answer sounded dangerous to her.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mom, I owe you an apology."

She turned toward him.

"For what, sweetheart?"

"For letting you do everything while we acted like this was a hotel."

Mom shook her head.

"Oh, Daniel, that's not fair."

"It is fair."

He took a breath.

"You cooked for us. You washed our things. You cleaned up after us. I saw it, and I kept telling myself you didn't mind."

Mom held the edge of her robe.

"I wanted everyone to feel welcome."

"I know. But we took advantage of that."

His voice was quiet.

There was no accusation in it, only regret.

Mom looked down at the deck boards.

I knew she wanted to rescue him from the discomfort of admitting what he had done.

She had always been good at that.

She would tell him it wasn't his fault.

She would say that families helped each other.

She would probably offer to make breakfast before anyone had even asked.

But Daniel didn't let the moment disappear.

"I'm sorry," he said. "You shouldn't have had to carry all of that."

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

I went inside and brought out three mugs of coffee.

We sat together on the deck, with the geraniums between us and the lake beyond them.

For once, Mom didn't jump up after a few minutes.

She didn't ask whether anyone wanted food.

She didn't start planning what she needed to prepare for lunch.

She held her mug in both hands and watched the water.

It was such a simple thing.

I wondered how long it had been since she had allowed herself to sit still without feeling guilty.

We heard footsteps upstairs.

Then a door opened and closed.

Daniel glanced toward the house.

"Here we go."

I knew what he meant.

At 7:18, Susan stepped onto the deck.

She wore a white cover-up over her swimsuit, and her sunglasses rested on top of her head.

She walked toward the lounger she usually occupied.

Then she saw the flowers.

She stopped.

Her sandals scraped against the boards as she turned toward us.

"I thought we'd already dealt with those."

Mom's fingers tightened around her mug.

I saw the apology forming before she spoke.

That old reflex.

The need to make everything comfortable for everyone else.

I answered before she could.

"We put them back."

Susan looked at me.

"Why?"

"Because Mom wants them here."

Susan pointed toward the water.

"They're in the way."

Daniel set down his mug.

"It's Maggie's deck, Mom. She gets to decide where her flowers go."

Susan stared at him.

I had seen her surprised before.

This was different.

She looked as if he had suddenly started speaking a language she didn't understand.

"Since when do you talk to me like that?"

"Since I realized I should have said it yesterday."

She turned toward Mom.

"Maggie, surely you can see that they obstruct the view from this chair."

Mom shifted slightly.

I could tell she wanted to say something that would end the discussion quickly.

But Daniel spoke again.

"If you don't like looking at the flowers, choose another seat."

Susan's mouth tightened.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then she asked where her coffee was.

Daniel pointed toward the kitchen.

"The coffee machine is ready. The mugs are next to it."

She waited.

He stayed seated.

Susan looked from him to me, apparently expecting one of us to understand that she wanted her coffee brought outside.

Neither of us moved.

Finally, she went inside.

I heard a cupboard open.

A spoon clinked against a cup.

When she returned, she was carrying her own coffee.

She sat down without another word.

For about ten minutes, the deck remained quiet.

Mom continued drinking her coffee.

Daniel looked out over the lake.

I tried to relax, although I could feel the tension in the air.

Susan eventually stood up and examined her lounger.

The cushion she preferred wasn't there.

She looked toward Daniel.

"Where did the blue cushion go?"

"In the linen closet, I think."

"Could you get it for me?"

"You can find it there."

Her eyes narrowed.

Then she walked back inside.

I heard the closet door open.

When she returned with the cushion, she placed it on the lounger more forcefully than necessary.

I almost laughed.

Not because the situation was funny, exactly.

Because I was watching an adult woman discover that she could locate her own cushion without assistance.

Mom noticed my expression and nudged my foot beneath the table.

She didn't want a fight.

Neither did I.

We weren't trying to embarrass Susan or make her feel unwelcome.

We were trying to stop treating her preferences as instructions that everyone else had to follow.

Those were different things.

Susan sat down again.

She looked at the lake through the red flowers.

Then she looked at her coffee.

For the first time since I had known her, nobody hurried to make her morning easier.

And I suspected that was only the beginning.

PART 2 END

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Empty Breakfast Table Exposed Years of Unspoken Resentment, and My Mother Finally Said What She Had Been Afraid to Admit

I woke before the alarm.
