I'm asking you to respect Maggie in her own home."

Susan's eyes moved toward me.

"So this is what happens when you get married. Your wife comes first, and your mother gets pushed aside."

I felt the old urge to defend myself.

I wanted to explain that I hadn't told Daniel what to think.

I wanted to remind her that he was a grown man capable of making his own decisions.

But I also knew that if I began arguing, the conversation would become another contest between her and me.

Daniel answered before I could.

"This isn't a competition between you and Emily."

Susan shook her head.

"That's easy for you to say."

"It's what I believe."

He paused.

"You can be my mother, and Maggie can still deserve respect. Those things don't conflict."

Susan looked away.

Richard stepped closer to her.

"I'll stay for now," he said. "I promised Maggie I'd help with the dock railing, and it still needs work."

Susan stared at him.

"You're staying here while I go home?"

"I'm finishing the job I offered to do."

She looked genuinely stunned.

Richard had spent years avoiding unnecessary arguments with her.

Now he was refusing to abandon a commitment simply because Susan was upset.

"You've all changed," she said.

Nobody corrected her.

Maybe we had.

Maybe we were only beginning to change.

Susan carried her suitcase to the door.

Daniel followed her outside.

He spoke to her quietly, and I couldn't hear every word.

I saw him touch her shoulder before she stepped toward her car.

She pulled away.

Then she drove off.

The sound of the engine faded beyond the trees.

For several seconds, the cabin was silent.

I expected to feel victorious.

Instead, I felt hollow.

I had wanted Susan to understand that Mom wasn't her personal housekeeper.

I had wanted Daniel to stop avoiding difficult conversations.

I had wanted the flowers returned to their rightful place.

Those things had happened.

Yet Mom sat on the sofa looking as though she had lost something important.

I went to her and wrapped my arms around her shoulders.

"Are you all right?"

She shook her head slightly.

"I don't know."

I sat beside her.

"Mom, you didn't do anything wrong."

She stared at the deck doors.

"I know we needed to talk. I just didn't want it to end like that."

Daniel came back inside.

He looked exhausted.

Richard went upstairs to change before starting work on the railing.

For a while, Mom said nothing.

Then she stood up and went to her bedroom.

I assumed she needed a few minutes alone.

When she returned, she was holding a manila envelope.

She sat down and placed it on the coffee table.

"I need to tell you something."

Her voice was so quiet that I leaned closer.

She opened the envelope and removed a document.

It was several pages long, with figures and property details printed across the top.

I recognized the heading before I understood why it was there.

A real estate appraisal.

I looked at the date.

It had been prepared three weeks earlier.

I read the address twice.

It was the lake house.

For a moment, I couldn't make sense of what I was seeing.

"Mom, why do you have this?"

She folded her hands in her lap.

"I've been thinking about selling the cabin."

The words seemed to empty the room of air.

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the document, his face pale.

"You were going to sell it?" I asked.

Mom nodded.

"I hadn't decided. I wanted to know what it was worth."

I looked at the appraisal again.

Three weeks.

She had been considering it for three weeks, perhaps longer.

All that time, I had been telling myself that she was happy to have us there.

All that time, she had been waking early, shopping, cooking, cleaning, and making sure everybody had what they needed.

And somewhere in the middle of it, she had started imagining a life without the house.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Mom looked at me with tired eyes.

"Because you were happy."

I shook my head.

"That doesn't mean you had to keep everything to yourself."

"You had just gotten married, Emily. I didn't want you to feel caught between me and Daniel's family."

I looked down at the appraisal.

She had been protecting my happiness while quietly considering giving up the place that held so many memories of my father.

I couldn't stop thinking about the flowers.

They were such a small thing compared with selling a house.

But they had shown me what Mom had learned to do whenever somebody else wanted something.

She moved what mattered to her.

She made room.

She said nothing.

Then she carried the consequences alone.

Daniel sat down beside her.

"I had no idea."

Mom gave him a sad smile.

"I didn't want anyone to feel unwelcome."

He lowered his head.

"That doesn't make what we did right."

"No," she said. "It doesn't."

She looked toward the deck.

"Your father loved this place. I kept it because I wanted to remember him here. I didn't expect to spend every weekend wishing Monday would come."

Her voice broke on the last word.

I reached for her hand.

She explained that Thursday had become a day for preparing the house, Friday was for shopping, Saturday was for feeding everybody, and Sunday was for dealing with the laundry and the mess.

By the time the cabin was empty again, she was exhausted.

Then she would have a few days to recover before the next visit.

"I started dreading the weekends," she said.

I had never heard her admit that.

My mother, who had always welcomed us with a smile, had been counting the days until we left.

Daniel covered his face with both hands.

"I should have seen it."

Mom touched his arm.

"I should have said something."

"Both can be true," I told them.

I didn't want her to blame herself for the way we had behaved.

But I also understood what she meant.

She had taught us to believe she was fine because she kept telling us she was fine.

We had accepted the answer because it was easier than looking more closely.

Mom picked up the appraisal.

"I don't know what I want to do yet."

I wanted to tell her to keep the house.

I wanted to promise that we would never make her feel this way again.

But promises had brought us here.

So I said something simpler.

"You don't have to decide today."

She looked at me.

"And you don't have to keep hosting us because we're family."

Daniel nodded.

"We'll visit when you want us here. And if you want the weekend alone, we'll respect that."

Mom studied both of us.

I could see that she wanted to believe us, but she had heard reassuring words before.

This time, she would need to see what we did after the conversation ended.

She slid the appraisal back into the envelope.

Then she placed it in the drawer beside the sofa.

"I think I want to keep my home," she said.

She didn't sound completely certain.

But she sounded more certain than she had when she first showed us the document.

I held her hand.

"Then let's make sure it can be your home again."

Outside, the red geraniums stood along the railing.

The lake was bright in the afternoon sun.

For the first time, I understood that putting the flowers back had never been the real solution.

The real solution was making sure Mom never had to choose between keeping her home and keeping the people she loved.

And that was going to require more than one difficult morning.

PART 4 END

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Missing Key Was the First Sign That Susan Had Confused Being Welcome With Having the Right to Come and Go

Susan came downstairs about forty minutes later.
