She said it might be convenient to arrive before the rest of us sometimes."

Mom sat on the edge of the bed.

"I never gave her permission to take it."

"I know," Daniel said.

He sounded troubled.

I remembered Susan talking about the cabin as if she had a standing claim to it.

She had always assumed she would be welcome.

We had encouraged that assumption by making our visits easy for her.

But being invited to stay was not the same as being entitled to enter whenever she pleased.

Daniel took out his phone.

He sent Susan a message asking whether she had the spare key.

We waited.

Mom sat with her hands folded in her lap.

I wanted to reassure her that we would find it.

But something about the brass tag bothered me.

The key hadn't simply been misplaced in the kitchen.

It had been separated from the tag and taken somewhere else.

Daniel's phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

Then he read the message again.

"She has it."

Mom stared at him.

"She has my key?"

Daniel nodded.

He read Susan's reply aloud.

She had taken the spare several weeks earlier because she wanted to be able to get into the cabin if she arrived before everyone else.

She didn't seem to understand why anyone would object.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Several weeks.

This had happened before the argument about the flowers.

Before Susan packed her suitcase.

Before Daniel finally spoke up.

She had quietly taken a key to a house that didn't belong to her.

And she had apparently seen nothing wrong with doing so.

Mom reached for the brass tag.

Her fingers closed around it.

"I thought I could trust everyone who stayed here."

Daniel sat beside her.

"You should have been able to."

He typed another message.

This time, he asked Susan to return the key immediately.

Her response came quickly.

She wanted to know why he was making such a fuss.

She had been visiting all summer, she said.

She had assumed she could use the cabin.

Daniel read the message with a strained expression.

Then he called her.

I could hear Susan's voice through the phone, sharp and indignant.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he answered in a calm voice.

"Being invited to visit doesn't mean you can take the owner's key."

Susan said something I couldn't make out.

Daniel shook his head.

"No. You didn't ask Maggie."

Mom looked toward the window.

She seemed more disappointed than angry.

Daniel continued listening.

Then Susan's voice rose again.

He stood and walked into the hallway, but I could still hear him.

He told her that he was making his own decisions.

He told her that I hadn't forced him to say anything.

And he told her that respecting his mother did not require him to ignore what she had done.

The conversation ended a few minutes later.

Daniel returned to the bedroom.

"She'll mail it back."

Mom looked at him.

"Did she understand why she needed to?"

He hesitated.

"Not really."

That answer frightened me more than an argument would have.

Susan had left the cabin believing that everyone had treated her unfairly.

Now she had learned that the key she had taken without permission was another boundary she had crossed.

Yet she still seemed to think the problem was our reaction.

Mom stood and placed the brass tag back in the drawer.

"I don't want to wonder whether somebody can walk into my house whenever they feel like it."

"You shouldn't have to," I said.

She looked at Daniel.

"Would changing the locks be too much?"

He shook his head.

"No."

He didn't hesitate.

Richard agreed when Daniel spoke to him about it.

That afternoon, we installed a keypad on the side door.

Mom chose the code herself.

She didn't tell me what it was.

She didn't tell Daniel.

She didn't apologize for keeping it private.

And nobody asked her to.

When the installation was finished, Richard tested the lock while Mom stood nearby.

The door opened when she entered the code.

Then it locked again when she closed it.

Mom tested it once more.

She seemed satisfied.

It was a small change.

But as I watched her stand beside that door, I realized she was finally making decisions about her own home without checking whether they might upset someone else.

Later, Daniel asked whether we could come back the following weekend.

Mom looked toward the deck.

The geraniums were still bright along the railing.

She hesitated before answering.

"I think I'd like to spend that weekend alone."

Daniel nodded.

"Of course."

He didn't ask her to reconsider.

I hugged her before we left.

She held me tightly for a moment, then stepped back with a small smile.

I could tell she was still nervous about disappointing us.

But she had said what she wanted.

And we had listened.

PART 5 END

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Photograph My Mother Sent From Her Quiet Weekend Showed Me What We Had Taken From Her Without Ever Asking

The rest of Saturday passed more quietly than I expected.
