I told people you had turned Daniel against me."

I looked at the water.

She continued.

"That wasn't fair."

"No, it wasn't."

She nodded.

"I know."

She said she had been angry when Daniel challenged her.

She had felt rejected when we stopped doing things for her.

Instead of asking herself why the arrangement had changed, she had decided that someone must have turned her family against her.

And because I was the person who had spoken most directly, she had made me the reason for everything.

"I made it easier to blame you than to look at myself," she said.

I let the words settle.

I wasn't ready to tell her that everything was fine.

It wasn't.

Her accusations had hurt me.

They had also put Daniel in the position of having to defend a decision he had made for himself.

But I appreciated that she was finally naming what she had done.

"Thank you for saying that."

Susan looked toward the cabin.

"I still might get things wrong."

"I know."

She gave a small, uncertain smile.

"I suppose that's not much of a promise."

"It's an honest place to start."

She nodded.

I told her that I had made mistakes, too.

I had watched Mom move her flowers and said nothing.

I had seen her working while everyone else relaxed, and I had told myself that she didn't mind.

I had avoided confrontation because I wanted the weekends to remain pleasant.

I had helped create the silence that allowed the problem to continue.

Susan looked at me.

"You didn't make me behave that way."

"No. But I should have spoken sooner."

We stood quietly for a moment.

I didn't want to turn the conversation into a contest over who had done more wrong.

The point wasn't to divide the blame into equal portions.

It was to recognize what each of us could change.

Susan glanced at the railing.

"Richard told me how much work he still had to do out here."

I smiled slightly.

"He promised to help Mom weeks before the argument."

"I know."

She looked embarrassed.

"I think I got used to believing that if something needed doing, somebody else would handle it."

I didn't respond.

She seemed to understand that I wasn't going to make her feel better by pretending that habit had been harmless.

We walked back toward the cabin together.

Mom was still on the deck.

She looked up when we approached but didn't ask what we had discussed.

Susan went inside to collect her bag.

Before she left, she thanked Mom for the weekend.

She didn't ask when she could return.

She didn't ask whether she could bring friends next time.

She simply said goodbye.

Mom hugged her.

It wasn't a long embrace, but neither woman pulled away quickly.

Then Susan walked to the car.

Richard had already loaded their bags.

They drove away together.

Mom stood at the doorway until the car disappeared beyond the trees.

I joined her.

"How do you feel?"

She considered the question.

"Better than I expected."

She looked at the deck.

"But I still want some weekends to myself."

"That's fine."

"I know."

She smiled.

"I think I'm finally starting to believe that."

We spent the rest of Sunday tidying the cabin before heading home.

Mom didn't rush us.

She sat outside while Daniel checked the doors.

Richard had already left after making sure the dock railing was secure.

I carried our bags to the car.

Before we departed, Daniel asked Mom whether she wanted us to visit again in a few weeks.

She thought about it.

"Let me see how I feel. I'll call you."

He nodded.

"All right."

He didn't look disappointed.

He didn't ask her to make a decision before we left.

We hugged Mom and drove away.

On the road home, Daniel was quiet.

I reached for his hand.

"Are you all right?"

He nodded.

"I think so."

He watched the trees pass.

"I used to believe that if my mother was upset, I had done something wrong."

I squeezed his hand.

"That's a hard habit to break."

"I know."

He took a breath.

"But I don't want to keep asking Maggie to make everything easier for her."

"Neither do I."

We drove the rest of the way without saying much.

I thought about the flowers.

I thought about the missing key and the appraisal in the manila envelope.

I thought about how close Mom had come to selling the cabin because she believed that keeping the peace meant making herself available to everyone.

The apology on the dock mattered.

So did the shared meals, the washed dishes, and the mornings when Mom could stay asleep.

But I knew the real test would come later, when another visit became inconvenient or someone wanted something Mom didn't want to give.

The family had learned how to talk about boundaries.

Now we needed to keep respecting them.

PART 11 END

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: One Year After the Flowers Were Moved, My Mother Finally Enjoyed Her Lake House Without Feeling She Had to Earn Her Place There

After breakfast, Mom stayed outside with her book.
