You're Frank Delgado?”

I removed the gray knitted cap.

“Yes.”

She looked at the restaurant, then back at me.

For a moment, she seemed unable to decide what to say.

I gave her a tired smile.

“I'm glad I finally got to meet you properly, Amber.”

She covered her mouth with one hand.

“You own Rosie’s?”

“I do.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

I wanted to tell her that she had nothing to be ashamed of.

Instead, I turned toward Kyle.

He was already moving toward the entrance.

He hurried inside, and I followed him.

The restaurant had become unusually quiet.

A few customers were looking toward the hostess counter.

Madison stood behind it, holding the small black device in her hands.

Kyle was speaking to her in a low, urgent voice.

“Give it to me.”

Madison looked frightened.

“I don't know what to do.”

“Just hand it over.”

I stepped toward the counter.

“Madison.”

Both of them turned.

She froze when she saw me.

“Put the device down,” I said.

Kyle tried to interrupt.

“Frank, you don't understand what's happening.”

I looked directly at him.

“Then explain it.”

He said nothing.

I turned back to Madison.

“The police are on their way. Don't hide anything. Don't destroy anything. Just put it on the counter.”

She hesitated.

Then she slowly lowered the device beside the reservation tablet.

It looked smaller than I had expected.

That somehow made the sight of it worse.

Something so small could potentially expose the private financial information of people who had trusted my restaurant.

And it had been sitting beneath the counter while I was busy celebrating improved profits.

I looked at the device.

Then I looked at the photograph of Mom hanging on the wall behind it.

The two things were only a few feet apart.

I couldn't stop thinking about the contrast.

One represented the promise I had made.

The other represented everything I had failed to notice.

Within minutes, police officers arrived.

They separated us and began asking questions.

I showed them the footage I had recorded from outside.

I explained the way I had seen Madison handle the payment cards.

I also told them about Kyle pushing me and shoving Amber against the wall.

An officer took photographs of my scraped hands and torn jacket.

Another spoke with the customers who were still inside.

Amber sat nearby with an ice pack against her shoulder.

Luis came out of the kitchen after hearing the commotion.

He looked stunned when he learned what had happened.

When he saw me standing beside the officers, he approached slowly.

“Boss, are you all right?”

I nodded.

“I'm all right, Luis.”

He glanced toward Kyle.

Then he looked at the black device on the counter.

His expression changed.

I knew he was thinking about the warnings he had given me months earlier.

I wished I could go back and listen to him the first time he called.

But I couldn't.

All I could do now was tell the truth and cooperate with the investigation.

The officers took Kyle aside for questioning.

Madison began crying.

She kept repeating that she hadn't thought anyone would lose anything.

She said Kyle had told her that banks would correct any problems.

I listened without interrupting.

I didn't yet know how much she understood, how much Kyle had told her, or whether she had participated willingly.

Those were questions for the investigators.

But I knew the matter had become far more serious than a manager treating customers badly.

A detective specializing in financial crimes arrived later that afternoon.

Her name was Sharon Vance.

She examined the preliminary evidence and asked me how long Kyle had managed the restaurant.

“About eighteen months.”

She looked down at the records the officers had collected.

“Some of these materials appear to cover a longer period than that.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?”

“We're going to have to establish the full timeline. At this stage, we have reason to investigate potentially hundreds of payment-card transactions.”

I sat down.

Hundreds.

The word seemed impossible to absorb.

I thought about the customers who had trusted us with their cards.

The older people who came in every Sunday.

The families who celebrated birthdays at our tables.

The people who left tips in the donation jar because they believed in what Rosie’s stood for.

I had spent years trying to build a place where people felt safe.

And while I was looking at reports showing better profits, something had gone terribly wrong inside it.

Detective Vance continued explaining what would happen next.

The device would be examined.

Records would be reviewed.

Investigators would determine whether customers' information had been collected and whether any unauthorized transactions could be connected to the restaurant.

She made it clear that they were still gathering evidence.

I appreciated that.

I didn't want to accuse anyone of more than the evidence supported.

But I couldn't ignore what I had seen.

The police began securing the relevant equipment and records.

They also sought the appropriate authorization to examine Kyle's office.

I stood near the dining room entrance while the officers worked.

The restaurant was still open to the street, but it no longer felt like the place I had known for eleven years.

The tables were the same.

The photographs were the same.

The bell above the door was the same.

Yet everything seemed unfamiliar.

I looked at Amber.

She was still sitting with the ice pack against her shoulder.

She had risked her job to help someone she believed was hungry.

I had hired a manager with impressive qualifications and trusted him with the business.

I had overlooked an employee whose character was worth more than any report he could produce.

That was the truth I couldn't escape.

As the investigation continued, Detective Vance returned with another question.

“Mr. Delgado, is there anyone else who might have information about what's been happening here?”

I thought of Luis.

I thought of the complaints.

I thought of the customers who had stopped coming and the missing donation jar.

Then I looked around the restaurant I had built for my mother.

“Yes,” I said. “There are people I need to talk to.”

I knew that calling the police had been necessary.

I also knew that it was only the beginning.

Whatever the investigation uncovered, I would have to face the part I had played in allowing it to happen.

I had been so determined to grow my business that I had stopped paying attention to the people who made it worth owning.

And now I had to find out just how much that failure had cost them.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Evidence in Kyle’s Office Revealed How Deep the Betrayal Might Go, While I Finally Faced the People I Had Failed to Protect

I remained on the pavement for several seconds.
