This money went from my account to your business."

Nobody spoke.

Wendell sat quietly beside me.

Megan's eyes were fixed on her brother.

Jordyn looked down at the table.

Zach stared at the statements.

For a few seconds, I thought he might deny everything.

Then he rubbed his forehead.

"Mom, I can explain."

I nodded.

"Then explain."

He took a long breath.

His business had been struggling for months.

Repair costs had increased.

Several experienced employees had left.

Then an electrical fire damaged equipment and some customers' vehicles.

The insurance company was disputing his claim.

Meanwhile, he still had payroll to cover.

There were loans to pay and other operating expenses that couldn't wait.

He had been trying to keep the business running while worrying that he might lose everything his father had helped him build.

I listened without interrupting.

When he finished, he looked at me.

"I thought I'd be able to replace the money before you noticed."

I glanced down at the statements.

"You took it without asking me."

He lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"You could have told me what was happening."

"I couldn't face you."

The words came out quietly.

He admitted that he had been ashamed of the business problems.

He had wanted to appear successful.

He had wanted me to believe everything was under control.

And because the insurance money was sitting in my account, he had convinced himself that he could borrow some of it and return it later.

I looked at him.

"Did you ever consider that I might have needed that money myself?"

He didn't answer.

I waited.

Finally, he shook his head.

"I wasn't thinking properly."

I believed that he had been frightened.

But fear didn't erase what he had done.

"You told me Wendell wanted my money."

Zach's face tightened.

I continued.

"You said he was trying to take advantage of me. You questioned him about his income and his house. You made me doubt someone who had never asked me for a single dollar."

He covered his face with his hands.

"And you used the grandchildren to pressure me."

His shoulders dropped.

"I know, Mom."

I felt tears gathering, but I refused to look away.

"I love you, Zachary. That doesn't mean you can make decisions about my money without my permission."

He began to cry.

It was the first time I had seen him cry like that since his father's funeral.

For a moment, I wanted to reach across the table and comfort him.

That instinct was strong.

He was my son.

I had held him when he was a child, cared for him when he was sick, and worried about him through every difficult stage of his life.

But I knew that if I comforted him before he accepted responsibility, I would be avoiding the conversation we needed to have.

So I stayed where I was.

Jordyn finally spoke.

"I knew about the transfers."

I turned toward her.

She was crying now, too.

"I told him he needed to speak to you. I kept asking him to tell you the truth."

Zach didn't look at her.

She continued.

"I was afraid of what would happen if the business failed. But I knew this wasn't right."

I felt hurt that she had known.

I also saw how frightened she had been.

That didn't excuse her silence, but it helped me understand why she had looked so uncomfortable during our Sunday dinners.

Her trembling hands had not been about Wendell.

She had been carrying a secret of her own.

I folded my hands on the table.

"Why did you keep accusing Wendell?"

Zach looked at him for the first time.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then he admitted that he had become afraid Wendell would discover the transfers.

He had worried that Wendell might encourage me to examine my accounts or help me take control of my finances again.

Instead of admitting what he had done, he had tried to make Wendell look dangerous.

The room fell silent.

I looked at my son and felt a sadness I couldn't put into words.

He had been so frightened of losing his business that he had risked losing my trust.

And he had nearly cost me a chance at happiness.

Wendell shifted in his chair.

"Zach, may I say something?"

My son wiped his face and nodded.

Wendell spoke quietly.

He told Zach about Ruth and the ramp he had promised to build.

He explained how he had delayed the work until it was too late to give her the help she needed.

He described the shame he had carried afterward.

"The longer I waited, the harder it became to admit that I'd made a mistake," he said.

He looked directly at Zach.

"I'm not saying what you did was right. It wasn't. But I understand how fear can make a person keep hiding something instead of facing it."

Zach began crying again.

He looked at Wendell.

"I accused you of trying to steal from my mother."

Wendell nodded.

"You did."

"And you were building her a home."

"Yes."

My son lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

He looked toward me.

"I'm sorry to both of you."

I believed that he meant it.

But I also knew that an apology was only the beginning.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: My Son Apologized at the Dinner Table, but Forgiveness Would Mean Little Unless He Faced What He Had Taken and Began Making Things Right

Sunday arrived more quickly than I expected.
