I thought I'd try his recipe."

I stepped closer and tasted a little from the spoon he offered.

There was too much pepper.

Quite a lot, actually.

But I smiled.

"Your father would have been proud of the effort."

Zach laughed, although he looked relieved that I hadn't complained.

I looked around the kitchen.

The buttercup-yellow walls glowed in the warm light.

The white cabinets were finished, and the little glass knobs shone whenever someone opened a door.

The counters were clear.

The pathways were wide enough for me to move around without bumping into chairs or furniture.

There was a sturdy chair near the table with armrests that would help me sit and stand.

I noticed the details because I knew what they meant.

Wendell had thought about the ordinary moments that could become difficult as a person grew older.

He hadn't waited for me to struggle before trying to make things easier.

Jordyn explained that Zach had borrowed the chairs from their church so I would have somewhere comfortable to sit.

I thanked her.

Then I looked at my son.

He shrugged, almost embarrassed.

"It seemed like a good idea."

It was a small gesture.

But it mattered.

We ate together around the long table.

There was enough food for everyone, and the children kept asking for more of the dishes they liked.

Carla told stories about the senior center.

Megan asked Wendell about the work he had done to finish the house.

He answered modestly, saying there were still a few things he wanted to improve.

Zach listened.

Every so often, he asked a question about the construction.

The two men were no longer sitting across from each other like opponents.

They were discussing measurements, tools, and the best way to finish a piece of wood.

I watched them and thought about how close we had come to losing something important.

My son had been wrong about Wendell.

Wendell had never tried to take my money.

He had been building a place where I could feel comfortable.

But Zach's wrongdoing had also been real.

The money had not disappeared simply because he had apologized.

The trust he had damaged had needed time and effort to begin healing.

I was glad to see him trying.

After dinner, everyone helped clear the table.

Wendell carried the dishes to the kitchen.

Zach wiped down the counter.

Megan and Jordyn packed away the leftovers.

The grandchildren were occupied with their Christmas gifts.

For a while, the house was full of the ordinary sounds I had missed so much.

People talking over one another.

Plates clinking.

Someone laughing in the next room.

I stood near the doorway and took it all in.

Then Wendell approached me.

"Would you come outside with me for a moment?"

I looked at him.

"Is there something else you've built that I haven't seen?"

He laughed.

"Not this time."

He offered his arm.

I took it, and together we followed the illuminated ramp toward the pecan tree.

The bench stood beneath the branches, decorated with small Christmas lights.

The evening air was cool against my cheeks.

Wendell helped me sit down.

Then he sat beside me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

The house glowed behind us.

Through the windows, I could see the family moving around the kitchen.

I thought about the first time I had stood in Wendell's garage.

I had arrived expecting to discover a betrayal.

Instead, I had found the beginning of a future I hadn't known I was allowed to want.

Wendell turned toward me.

"I've been thinking about what I wanted to say tonight."

I smiled.

"You mean the speech you practiced?"

He laughed softly.

"That speech."

He looked down at our joined hands.

"I don't think I need all those words anymore."

I waited.

He took a breath.

"Winnie, I know you've loved Dwight for a long time. I would never ask you to forget him."

My eyes filled with tears.

He continued.

"I don't expect you to change your life overnight, and I don't want you to promise anything you're not ready to promise."

He paused, then looked into my eyes.

"I just want you to know that you will always have a place here."

The lights above us trembled in the breeze.

He squeezed my hand.

"Whenever you need somewhere to go, this house will be waiting for you."

I looked at the ramp.

Then at the yellow kitchen through the window.

Then at the man sitting beside me.

He hadn't asked me to leave my home.

He hadn't demanded that I choose between my memories and the possibility of loving again.

He had simply made room for me.

And somehow, that meant more than any grand declaration could have meant.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Beneath the Pecan Tree, I Finally Understood That Loving Another Man Did Not Require Me to Give Up the Husband I Had Lost

Christmas Eve arrived with a cold breeze and clear skies.
