We could have coffee beneath this tree."

His face relaxed.

"I'd like that very much."

I looked at the kitchen again.

The yellow walls reminded me of my mother.

The glass knobs reminded me of the farmhouse where I had grown up.

The ramp reminded me that someone had listened when I talked about my fears.

Wendell had taken things I once mentioned in passing and turned them into something real.

I squeezed his hand.

"Then that's what we'll do for now."

He smiled.

I told him he could ask me again about our future at Easter.

He laughed.

"At Easter?"

"That's what I said."

"And what if I forget?"

"Then I'll remind you."

He shook his head, still smiling.

We sat together until the cold began bothering my knees.

Then he helped me stand, and we walked back toward the house.

I didn't need to rush.

The ramp was gentle, and the handrail was firm beneath my palm.

At the doorway, I paused.

For months, I had wondered why Wendell had refused to invite me inside.

I had imagined secrets that would have broken my heart.

I had listened to my son warn me about a man who had never asked for anything from me.

Now I understood that Wendell had been trying to finish a promise before he shared it.

He had made mistakes, too.

He had kept me guessing when he could have explained himself.

But when the truth came out, it was not the truth I had feared.

I looked at him.

"Next time you decide to build something for me, you can at least tell me what you're doing."

He laughed.

"I'll try."

"You'd better."

He opened the door.

Inside, Carla was waiting near the table.

She looked from Wendell to me and grinned.

"Well?"

I shook my head.

"Don't start."

She laughed so loudly that the children came running to see what was happening.

For the rest of the evening, we talked, ate leftover dessert, and watched the grandchildren play.

I felt comfortable in the house.

Not because it belonged to me.

Because I had been welcomed into it without being asked to surrender anything important.

When it was time to leave, Wendell walked me to the truck.

He helped me settle into the passenger seat and made sure I was comfortable.

Then he drove me home.

The road was quiet.

I rested my hands in my lap and watched the lights pass outside the window.

I thought about the years ahead.

My knees might get worse.

I might eventually need more medical care or even the surgery my doctor had discussed.

I couldn't predict how much my independence would change.

But I no longer felt that I had to face every possibility alone.

When we reached my house, Wendell walked me to the front door.

The porch light shone above us.

I looked up at it and smiled.

He noticed.

"Still working."

"It had better be. You fixed it."

He laughed.

Then he kissed my cheek and wished me goodnight.

I went inside and stood in the living room.

Dwight's recliner remained beside the window.

I walked over and rested my hand on its arm.

For the first time in a long while, I didn't feel the need to apologize to my husband in my thoughts for being happy.

I simply remembered him.

I remembered the life we had shared.

Then I turned off the living-room light and went to bed.

The following Wednesday, I drove to Wendell's house.

He was waiting near the garage with two cups of coffee.

Both had two creams.

I laughed when I saw them.

"You remembered."

He looked almost offended.

"Of course I remembered."

We sat beneath the pecan tree.

The air was mild, and the sunlight moved slowly across the yard.

We talked about the week.

He asked about my knees.

I asked whether he had been resting properly.

He assured me he was.

I wasn't entirely convinced.

But I had learned that caring for someone did not mean trying to control every part of his life.

I could remind him to rest.

He could remind me to take things slowly.

We could help each other without pretending either of us was helpless.

That became our Wednesday habit.

Sometimes we sat outside.

Sometimes we had coffee in the yellow kitchen.

Sometimes I helped prepare a simple lunch while Wendell finished a small repair.

He never rushed me.

I never rushed him.

And when Sunday came, he still visited my house for dinner.

The routines were ordinary.

That was what made them precious.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Ten Months Later, the Ramp Still Made My Walk Easier, My Son Was Paying Me Back, and I Was Learning to Trust Happiness Again

I sat beside Wendell for a long time.
