3 – The Woman Who Bought My Dogwood Had Never Met Me, Yet She Was Already Mourning Me Before My Brother Even Proposed

A year and a half after my grandmother's funeral, Avery walked into the garden center where I worked.

I recognized her immediately.

I had seen her face in family photographs for years, even though she had never seen mine.

She approached the counter and asked for a dogwood tree.

“It's for a memorial garden at our church,” she explained. “My boyfriend's family has lost someone, and I want to choose something special.”

I asked what kind of tree she had in mind.

She said she wanted something that would bloom reliably and look beautiful in spring.

Then she told me about her own family.

Every Easter, her mother read the names of loved ones at sunrise.

Avery wanted to give her something that would make the garden feel complete.

I assumed she was talking about my grandmother.

I didn't know what else to think.

I walked her through the dogwoods and helped her choose a Cherokee Princess with a healthy graft union.

She examined the branches carefully.

I explained how to water it during its first summer and why it needed a good start before the heat arrived.

When I wrote the care instructions on the nursery tag, I added the note I used for trees I trusted.

The graft was sound.

Water deeply.

It would bloom.

Avery read the tag.

Then she looked at me for a long moment.

“You look familiar,” she said.

I felt my throat tighten.

“Maybe we've met before.”

She shook her head.

“I think I would remember.”

I could have told her who I was.

I could have said my name and watched the confusion spread across her face.

Instead, I finished the sale.

I helped load the tree.

Then I watched her drive away with a piece of my own future sitting in the back of her vehicle.

I told myself I had done nothing wrong.

I had no proof that Avery knew anything about the way my parents treated me.

I had no idea what she had been told.

So I stayed silent.

That Christmas, Mitch proposed.

Mom sent me a text announcing the wedding date.

June 13.

She ended the message by telling me to keep the weekend free.

I read it several times before I understood what she meant.

She wasn't asking whether I could attend.

She was instructing me to remain available to leave.

I went to her room and asked why I couldn't be at my brother's wedding.

She looked up from what she was doing.

“It's not the right time for you to be there.”

I asked what that meant.

She didn't answer.

I asked whether Avery knew I was her sister-in-law.

Mom's expression hardened.

“Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be.”

I walked away.

The wedding was postponed twice when the pandemic disrupted everyone's plans.

Each time, Mom sent another message with the new date.

Each time, she told me to keep the weekend free.

The years were passing, but the rules were not changing.

Then, for eight weeks in 2020, the restrictions forced everyone to remain at home.

For the first time in years, I couldn't escape to Ruth's farm.

I had to stay in the same house as my parents.

I thought that might make things better.

Instead, it made the arrangement harder to hide.

One Sunday, Avery called Mom on FaceTime.

I was in the kitchen making lunch when my mother saw me behind her on the screen.

She immediately covered the camera with her hand.

“Move out of view,” she whispered.

I stared at her.

She pointed toward a corner of the room beyond the camera's reach.

I carried my plate there and ate standing up while she spoke to Avery.

They chatted as though the house contained only one person.

I listened to Mom ask about wedding plans and family visits.

At one point, Avery laughed.

My mother laughed with her.

I looked down at my food.

It was a strange thing to feel invisible while standing in your own kitchen.

But by then, I had become very good at it.

The wedding eventually settled on October 8, 2022.

Mom sent me the date.

“Keep it free.”

I didn't reply.

By Easter 2021, my parents had started attending the Lockhearts' sunrise service.

Mom's messages now included instructions about the Lockhearts coming for supper on Saturday and attending church on Sunday.

I was expected to leave before they arrived.

The visits were no longer just about Avery.

Her parents were part of them, too.

Mom had begun calling them our church friends.

I had never met them properly, but I knew when they were coming because my mother would inspect the house, move my belongings, and remind me of the departure time.

People sometimes ask why I didn't leave permanently.

The answer is not complicated.

I was afraid of losing access to my medication and therapist.

Both were covered by my father's employer insurance plan.

The garden center didn't provide health coverage.

My mother reminded me of that whenever I challenged her.

“You're covered under our plan until you're twenty-six. You live under our roof, so you follow our rules.”

I hated hearing it.

I also knew what it would cost me if I ignored it.

When I turned twenty-six, I bought my own marketplace insurance.

The card arrived with my name on it and nobody else's.

For a few days, I carried it in my wallet and checked it more often than necessary.

I thought having my own coverage would make it easier to leave.

But independence isn't always a single decision.

Sometimes you spend years learning that the things you need can be taken away from you.

Even after I had my own insurance, I stayed.

That Thanksgiving, I returned from Ruth's farm and discovered that my medication had been moved into my locked bedroom.

Mom told me to keep it there because people used the bathroom.

I looked at her.

That bathroom had been used by the same family for seven years.

Nobody had ever worried about my medicine before.

I asked for the key.

She said she would give it to me later.

The newest bottle had a date printed on it from that October.

I remember seeing the label and feeling a small, cold uneasiness.

I thought Mom was afraid of the medication.

I didn't understand that the date itself was a problem.

A few months later, another box of cuttings arrived from Ingred in Washington.

Ruth copied Ingred's telephone number onto a paper towel and handed it to me.

“You should call her yourself,” she said. “I'm done carrying messages between the two of you.”

I waited until I was alone before making the call.

Ingred answered without much ceremony.

“So you're the one with the good hands.”

I laughed because I didn't know what else to do.

She said the offer to visit still stood.

April was coming, and there would be plenty of work.

I told her I would think about it.

I was frightened by how much I wanted to go.

Leaving Alabama would mean giving up the familiar routines, even the painful ones.

It would mean making decisions without knowing whether my parents would approve.

It would mean accepting that I might never be welcomed back into the family in the way I had once hoped.

Still, the idea stayed with me.

Then the Easter message arrived.

The Lockhearts were coming for supper Saturday.

There would be sunrise service Sunday.

I had to be gone by ten in the morning.

I left at 9:40.

I wrote the date in my yellow notebook.

Two hundred eleven.

April 16, 2022.

That evening, at Ruth's farm, I opened my pill organizer.

The compartment for Saturday was empty.

I checked the other compartments.

Then I checked my bag.

My medication was still inside my locked bedroom at home.

Ruth watched me search.

She didn't tell me I should have been more careful.

She didn't ask why I hadn't demanded the key earlier.

She just stood beside the kitchen table and waited until I looked up.

“Go back and get what belongs to you,” she said. “Then come straight here.”

I picked up my keys.

For the first time in years, I wasn't going back because my mother had summoned me.

I was going back because I needed something that was mine.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Returned for My Medicine After Midnight and Found a Memorial Photograph That Turned Eight Years of Strange Rules Into One Terrible Truth

A year and a half after my grandmother's funeral, Avery walked into the garden center where I worked.
