6 – I Had Built a New Life Thousands of Miles Away, but One Photograph Online Was Enough to Bring My Old Family Story Back

The promotion came with more responsibility than I expected.

I was no longer checking only my own work.

I had to make sure the crew had what it needed, that the records were accurate, and that problems were dealt with before they spread.

If a weather warning came through, I helped decide which blocks needed attention first.

If a worker noticed something wrong with a tree, I had to listen before making a decision.

I liked that part of the job.

I had spent years in a house where my questions were treated as inconveniences.

Now people brought me questions because they believed my answers might help.

That changed the way I carried myself.

I stopped apologizing before I spoke.

I stopped assuming that someone would become angry if I disagreed.

I also began allowing people to know me.

Ingred insisted that my photograph be added to the orchard's website.

She said customers should know who was managing the trees.

I hesitated.

My face hadn't appeared on a public profile in years.

I had deleted my social-media accounts at my mother's request, and I had spent so long avoiding photographs that the idea of putting one online felt dangerous.

Ingred didn't understand the hesitation.

“It's a photograph, Anastasia,” she said. “You're not giving anyone your house keys.”

I knew she was right.

Still, when the photograph went up, I checked the page several times.

It showed me standing beside a row of young apple trees.

I wore a work jacket and held a clipboard.

There was nothing remarkable about it.

I looked like someone who belonged at the orchard.

That was what made the picture difficult to look at.

For years, I had been made to feel that being visible was something I had to earn.

Now my face was on a website because I had done my job well.

I left the photograph there.

Months passed.

I continued working.

Callum Reed, one of the mechanics who serviced the orchard equipment, had become a familiar presence.

We first spoke when a lift stopped working while I was checking a row of trees.

I was several feet above the ground, trying to work out why the platform wouldn't move.

Callum arrived, examined the mechanism, and fixed the problem in a few minutes.

He watched me climb down.

“You check everything twice,” he said.

“Once for the tree,” I told him. “Once for myself.”

He laughed.

After that, we began talking more often.

We ate dinner together after my Thursday therapy appointments.

Sometimes we discussed work.

Sometimes we talked about ordinary things that had nothing to do with orchards.

Neither of us rushed to define the relationship.

I liked that.

For once, I didn't feel I had to prove I deserved to be there.

I could have a difficult day without explaining every reason for it.

I could be quiet without being punished for it.

I could say I wanted to go home, and nobody asked whether I meant I was leaving forever.

The relationship grew slowly.

I didn't tell him everything about Alabama at once.

When I did talk about it, he listened without trying to decide which parts were reasonable enough to forgive.

That helped me more than advice would have.

I still had difficult nights.

Sometimes I dreamed I was back in the house, standing outside my locked bedroom while voices moved through the hallway.

Sometimes I woke convinced I had missed a message from my mother.

Sometimes I caught myself rehearsing explanations for decisions nobody had questioned.

Therapy helped me recognize those habits.

It didn't make them vanish.

I was learning a different way to live, and learning took time.

My family remained far away.

I had no regular contact with my parents or Mitch.

I knew nothing about their daily lives, and they knew very little about mine.

I had asked them not to look for me.

They had apparently accepted that instruction, at least on the surface.

Then, in February 2026, my name appeared in an unexpected place.

I didn't know about it when the process began.

Suzanne Lockheart wanted to establish a horticulture scholarship at Hoover High School in memory of her son, Trip.

She planned to offer two thousand dollars each year to a student who wanted to study plants or a related field.

The school foundation needed information about local horticulture professionals who could help with the program.

Someone forwarded the request to Mr. Witcom.

He read my name on the orchard's website.

Then he checked the dates.

He remembered the recommendation letter he had written for me in 2023.

He called my father.

I learned about that conversation later.

At the time, I was working through the morning assignments when my phone buzzed with an email from Mr. Witcom.

He asked whether I was all right.

He explained that he might have told my father something I had not wanted him to know.

I read the message standing beside the office desk.

For a few seconds, I couldn't move.

I had known the photograph was public.

I had chosen to leave it there.

But I hadn't considered that someone from Alabama might connect it to the girl who had supposedly disappeared.

I wrote back that I was safe.

I didn't explain everything.

I wanted to know what my father had said first.

Mr. Witcom replied that my father had asked for time.

He hadn't sounded surprised that I was alive.

That detail troubled me.

If Dad had truly believed I was gone, the discovery should have changed something in his voice.

Instead, he had asked for time.

I tried to return to work.

I checked the day's records and answered questions from the crew.

But the message stayed in my mind.

My father had my name.

He had my photograph.

He had a teacher who could confirm that I had been working and studying years after I left Alabama.

For the first time in four years, the distance between my old life and my new one had narrowed.

I wondered whether he would contact me.

I wondered whether my mother already knew.

I wondered whether Mitch had seen the photograph.

I also wondered what my family would do with the truth now that it had found them without my help.

I didn't have to wait long.

One morning, the orchard office phone rang.

Ingred answered.

After a short conversation, she covered the receiver and looked toward me.

“It's your mother.”

I stood very still.

For a moment, I was nineteen again, waiting for instructions about where I could spend the weekend.

Ingred held the phone out to me.

I took it.

“Anastasia,” Mom said.

Her voice sounded exactly as I remembered.

No greeting.

No question about where I had been.

No mention of the four years that had passed.

“I need you to contact Suzanne Lockheart.”

I sat down.

Mom began explaining before I could answer.

She said Suzanne had misunderstood what happened years ago.

She said everyone had been grieving.

She said nobody had known whether I was alive.

According to the version she wanted me to confirm, I had left in 2014, and my family had lost contact with me immediately afterward.

All I had to do was tell Suzanne that I had been gone for years and that my parents had never known where I was.

Then, Mom said, we could put the matter behind us.

She even offered a Christmas visit.

It was presented as though she were giving me something I had earned.

I listened without interrupting.

Then she said the words that made the entire call clear.

“You've always been good at keeping out of sight. I just need you to help us one more time.”

I looked through the office window toward the orchard.

The young Cosmic Crisp trees were growing on roots that had supported another variety for years.

Their branches were still thin, but the grafts had taken.

I thought about my yellow notebook.

I thought about the memorial stone.

I thought about the woman who had stood outside my bedroom and asked permission to open a door that belonged to me.

My mother was asking me to disappear again.

This time, she wanted me to do it with my own voice.

I told her I would think about it.

Then I ended the call.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Brother Finally Admitted What He Had Done, and I Learned That the Lie Began With a Sentence He Never Took Back

The promotion came with more responsibility than I expected.
