It was easier to say you were being unreasonable."

I dried the plate in my hands.

"That happens sometimes," I said. "It's easier to argue about someone's reaction than to think about what caused it."

She nodded.

"I did that."

I looked at her.

It was another honest admission.

Not a grand apology.

Not a promise that everything would always be different.

Just a willingness to acknowledge what she had done.

I appreciated it.

"I was hurt," I told her. "But I didn't change the booking to punish you. I changed it because I needed to make a different decision for myself."

"I understand."

"I hope we can keep talking like this."

She gave a small smile.

"I hope so, too."

We finished the dishes.

The conversation didn't solve every difficulty between us.

It did, however, make the room feel less tense.

Later, after everyone had left, I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of tea.

The house was quiet.

I looked at the empty plates waiting to be put away and thought about how much had changed since that Wednesday morning in December.

The message had seemed so small when it first arrived.

A few words on a phone.

A simple announcement about Christmas gifts.

But those words had forced me to examine years of decisions I had made without questioning them.

I had assumed that if I gave enough, helped enough, and asked for little enough, my family would always understand how much I loved them.

I had never considered that my silence might make it easier for them to overlook what I needed.

That was difficult to admit.

I had played a part in maintaining the arrangement.

I had avoided conversations.

I had made excuses.

I had told myself that being a good mother meant protecting my son from discomfort, even when he was old enough to take responsibility for his own choices.

I couldn't blame him for every year I had spent doing that.

But I could stop doing it now.

I picked up my cup and carried it to the sink.

Then I returned to the refrigerator and looked at Maisie's drawing.

The little figure still stood on the roof, arms spread wide above the blue mountains.

I smiled.

The drawing reminded me of the Christmas I had changed.

It also reminded me of the Christmas I had kept.

The smaller chalet had given us a chance to enjoy one another without the burden of trying to make everything perfect.

I wanted to carry that lesson into the rest of my life.

I would still host dinners.

I would still look after the grandchildren when I could.

I would still give presents because I enjoyed choosing something thoughtful for the people I loved.

But I would no longer assume that every family tradition had to continue exactly as it always had.

If a tradition required me to ignore my own feelings, I could change it.

If a favor became an expectation, I could discuss it.

If someone disappointed me, I could tell them without immediately apologizing for being hurt.

Those choices did not make me less loving.

They made my love more honest.

I turned off the kitchen light and went upstairs.

The next morning, I planned to call Jean and arrange our next visit.

I also wanted to spend some time in the garden.

There were seeds to plant and weeds to pull.

For once, I had no intention of filling every free hour with something someone else might need.

I would make room for my family.

And I would make room for myself.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The First Time I Planned a Family Gathering Without Carrying Every Responsibility, I Discovered How Much Had Changed Since Christmas

Spring arrived slowly in Brockville.
