he said. "What would you like us to bring?"

The question made me smile.

"Something for dessert would be lovely."

"Yvette can make the apple tart she tried last month."

"That sounds wonderful."

We settled the time and ended the call.

I looked at the kettle.

It was a small exchange, hardly worth remembering.

Yet I remembered it.

For years, I had arranged family gatherings by deciding the menu, buying the groceries, preparing the food, and making sure everyone knew when to arrive.

I had never thought to ask why that work had become mine by default.

This time, the arrangements felt shared.

On Saturday morning, I went to the market and bought fresh vegetables.

I didn't buy enough food for an army.

I bought what we needed.

When Carter arrived that evening, he carried a dish into the kitchen and asked where I wanted it placed.

Yvette followed him with the apple tart.

The children came in behind them, already talking about something that had happened at school.

Maisie ran toward the refrigerator.

"Grandma, my picture is still here!"

"Of course it is."

She stood looking at it with obvious satisfaction.

Then she asked whether she could make another one.

I gave her some paper and the box of crayons I kept in the kitchen drawer.

She settled at the table while I finished preparing dinner.

Carter helped set out the plates.

Yvette arranged the salad.

Nobody needed to be told what to do.

I watched them from the stove and felt a quiet sense of relief.

Not because they were doing me a favor.

Because they were participating in something we were all sharing.

Dinner went smoothly.

We talked about school, work, and a neighbor who had recently adopted a very energetic dog.

Carter told a story about a mistake one of his colleagues had made on a project.

Yvette laughed so hard at one part that she had to put down her fork.

For a while, I forgot that there had ever been a difficult Christmas.

Then Maisie asked whether we could have another family holiday sometime.

I looked at her.

"Perhaps," I said. "We'll have to plan it together."

She seemed satisfied with that answer.

The conversation moved on.

But I thought about it later, after the dishes had been washed and the children had gone home.

I wanted another holiday with my family.

I wanted the laughter, the meals, and the photographs that would eventually find their way into albums.

What I no longer wanted was the belief that I had to pay for every part of the experience to make it happen.

The next day, Cordelia called.

She asked how dinner had gone.

I told her everyone had helped, and that Yvette had brought dessert.

"That sounds good," she said.

"It was."

"How did you feel?"

I thought for a moment.

"Relaxed."

She laughed softly.

"That's a nice change."

"It really is."

I told her that I had begun to understand something I should have understood years ago.

When I arranged everything myself, I had made it easy for everyone else to arrive and enjoy the results without thinking about the work involved.

I hadn't done that because they had demanded it.

I had done it because I wanted everyone to be happy.

Cordelia listened.

"There's nothing wrong with wanting people to be happy, Mom. But they should care whether you are happy, too."

I looked at the family calendar.

"I know."

And I did.

I no longer needed someone else to convince me that my feelings mattered.

The difficult part was remembering that when an old habit tried to take over.

A few days later, Carter called to ask whether I would be willing to look after the children during an upcoming school holiday.

I checked my plans before answering.

"I can help on Thursday afternoon, but I have something arranged for Friday."

"Thursday would work," he said. "Thank you."

There was no complaint.

No suggestion that I should change my plans.

We agreed on the time.

Afterward, I sat at the table and smiled at the phone.

It wasn't that I had become less willing to help.

I was still happy to spend time with my grandchildren.

I simply no longer believed that being available all the time was the same as being loving.

That distinction had taken me years to learn.

I hoped I would remember it.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When Another Christmas Was No Longer Something I Had to Rescue, I Began to Understand What Our Family Needed From Me Instead

By the time spring settled properly over Brockville, I had begun to enjoy my Sundays again.
