he said.

"I should have told you."

He looked up.

"But you also could have noticed."

He nodded slowly.

"You're right."

I didn't feel the urge to rescue him from the discomfort of admitting it.

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then he said that he wanted the next Christmas to be different.

He didn't suggest that I pay for a larger chalet.

He didn't ask me to restore the old arrangements.

He said he wanted us to discuss the plans together before anyone made assumptions.

I considered his proposal.

"That sounds sensible."

He seemed relieved.

"We don't have to decide anything now," I added. "But when the time comes, we'll talk about what everyone wants and what everyone can afford."

He agreed.

The conversation ended there.

After he left, I carried the empty cups to the sink.

I felt hopeful.

Not certain.

Hopeful.

There was a difference between those feelings, and I had become more careful about confusing them.

A promise was encouraging.

A pattern of behavior would tell me more.

I didn't need Carter to become a perfect son.

I needed him to understand that being my son did not exempt him from considering my feelings.

I needed Yvette to understand that respect could not depend on whether I was paying for something.

And I needed to remember that I could love them both without taking responsibility for every outcome.

That evening, I called Cordelia.

I told her about Carter's visit.

She was pleased that they had talked.

"That sounds like progress," she said.

"I think it is."

"Just don't feel that you have to make next Christmas perfect."

I laughed.

"I wasn't planning to."

She laughed, too.

We spoke about her work and the teenagers before ending the call.

Afterward, I went into the kitchen to put away the biscuits Carter had brought.

I placed the box beside the tea tin.

It was an ordinary gift.

I appreciated it because he had thought of me, not because of what it cost.

That was something I wished I had understood more clearly when the original message arrived.

The problem had never been the absence of an expensive present.

It had been the absence of consideration.

I could have accepted a Christmas without gifts.

I could have accepted a smaller celebration.

I could even have accepted an explanation that was uncomfortable to hear.

What I could no longer accept was being treated as though I should understand everyone else's priorities while pretending I had none of my own.

That was the lesson I carried forward.

When the leaves began turning in autumn, I found myself thinking about the Laurentians again.

I remembered the chalet's stone fireplace and the snow beyond the windows.

I remembered James explaining the Gordon Lightfoot song to Benji.

I remembered Cordelia crying over the photograph of her father.

And I remembered how peaceful I had felt when I finally stopped trying to make the original plan work.

The smaller chalet had not been a consolation prize.

It had been the right place for the people who were there.

That realization mattered more than I expected.

I no longer needed a family gathering to look impressive from the outside.

I wanted it to feel good from the inside.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Next Time We Discussed Christmas, I Refused to Let Old Expectations Make the Decisions Before Anyone Had Even Sat Down Together

As the months passed, the memory of that December message became less painful.
