We can talk about this."

"We will. Through our lawyers."

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't insult her.

He simply refused to pretend that their marriage was still what she had allowed him to believe it was.

Vanessa began crying harder.

Daniel looked exhausted.

I wanted to go to him, but he gave me a small nod that told me he was all right for the moment.

Ethan turned back toward me.

"Claire, please."

I removed my engagement ring.

For a few seconds, I held it in my palm.

I remembered the day he had given it to me.

He had promised that I would never have to wonder where I stood with him.

I had believed him.

Now I placed the ring on the table beside the officiant.

"The wedding is canceled."

The words seemed to settle over the chapel.

My father lowered the envelope.

My mother covered her face.

Ethan stood motionless.

I didn't wait for anyone to respond.

I walked toward the entrance.

The dress brushed against my legs.

The veil rested in my hand.

I could hear people speaking behind me, but I didn't turn around.

Outside, the sunlight was brighter than I expected.

I stood near the chapel doors and took a long breath.

Rachel joined me a few minutes later.

She didn't tell me everything would be fine.

She didn't promise that the company would recover or that my family would forgive me.

She simply asked whether I wanted to sit down.

I shook my head.

"I need a moment."

She nodded and waited.

I thought about the four years I had spent financing my father's company.

I had done it because I wanted to help.

I had wanted him to have another chance.

I had wanted the business to survive without making him feel that he had failed.

Now I understood that I couldn't control how he would respond to the truth.

I could only decide what I was willing to do next.

The wedding was over.

The financing dispute remained.

Daniel's marriage was ending.

And my relationship with my parents had changed in ways I couldn't yet measure.

I looked at the envelope in Rachel's hands.

It contained documents.

Not revenge.

Not a verdict.

Just the beginning of a process that had to happen whether my father liked it or not.

I was going to let that process continue.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Calls Began After the Ceremony, and Every Request to Protect the Family Asked Me to Forget Something I Could No Longer Ignore

Rachel stood from her seat.
