10 – My Grandchildren Began Visiting the Cottage for Strawberries and Pancakes, and I Discovered How Different Love Felt When Nobody Expected Me to Do preparing the small garden beside the cottage.

Benjamin had not forgotten his strawberries.

He reminded me every time he visited.

“Grandma, when are we planting them?”

“Soon.”

“You said that last time.”

I laughed.

“You are a very patient gardener.”

“No, I'm not.”

He was right about that.

I bought the plants, and one Saturday, Michael brought the children over to help me put them in the ground.

Benjamin carried a small gardening tool.

Sophie brought a notebook where she had drawn a plan for the flower beds.

She wanted the roses on one side and the lavender near the steps.

I let her make suggestions.

Some were sensible.

Others would have made the garden difficult to maintain.

We talked about them and worked out a plan together.

It felt good to make decisions with the children rather than for everyone.

Benjamin crouched beside the first strawberry plant.

“Will it grow today?”

“Not today, sweetheart.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Plants need time.”

He sighed as though this were an unreasonable rule.

Sophie laughed at him.

I remembered how often I had tried to make everything happen immediately when Michael was young.

I had believed that a good mother should always have the answer and always know what came next.

Now I was learning that some things needed patience.

The garden was one of them.

So was my relationship with my family.

After planting the strawberries, we went inside to wash our hands.

I made pancakes for lunch because Benjamin had been asking about them since moving day.

He stood beside me while I mixed the batter.

Sophie set the table.

Michael sat at the kitchen table, watching us.

“You know,” he said, “I don't remember the last time I made pancakes without asking you something.”

I looked over my shoulder.

“Have you tried?”

“Once.”

“And?”

“The first batch was terrible.”

I smiled.

“Then the second batch should have been better.”

“It was.”

He looked down at his coffee.

“I suppose I should have learned earlier.”

I did not answer immediately.

There was no need to make him feel worse.

We were sitting together in my kitchen.

The children were happy.

The pancakes were cooking.

That was enough.

When they finished eating, Benjamin asked whether he could take some strawberries home.

I explained that the plants would need time before they produced fruit.

He looked disappointed.

Then Sophie told him they could check the garden on their next visit.

He agreed.

I walked them to the car when they were ready to leave.

Michael hugged me.

“Thanks for having us.”

“You're welcome.”

He hesitated.

“It's nice here, Mom.”

I looked back at the cottage.

“I think so too.”

He smiled.

Then he drove away.

I returned inside and found the kitchen messy.

There was flour on the counter.

A few dishes remained in the sink.

The table needed wiping.

For a moment, I stood there out of habit, thinking about how quickly I should clean everything.

Then I made myself a cup of tea.

I sat down.

The dishes could wait.

Nothing terrible would happen if the kitchen remained untidy for an hour.

I drank my tea beside the window while the afternoon light fell across the garden.

It was a small thing.

But it felt like freedom.

My relationship with Michael continued to improve.

We began meeting for breakfast once a month at a diner near the cottage.

He usually arrived a few minutes early.

Sometimes we talked about his work.

Sometimes we discussed the children.

Other times, we remembered Robert.

One morning, Michael told me about a family holiday we had taken when he was young.

He remembered how Robert had insisted on bringing a large cooler even though the trip was only a few hours long.

“He packed enough food for a week,” Michael said.

“That sounds like your father.”

“He said we would thank him later.”

“Did we?”

“No. We complained about carrying it.”

I laughed.

We sat there remembering the little things that had made our family what it was.

For a while, I forgot about the difficult years.

I remembered the good ones.

That mattered too.

I did not want the night of the promotion dinner to become the only story I told myself about my family.

It had hurt me.

It had forced me to make a change.

But it did not erase the years of love that had come before it.

One morning, Michael stirred his coffee and looked at me.

“Do you regret leaving?”

I considered the question.

I could have given him an easy answer.

I could have told him everything was fine and spared us both the discomfort.

Instead, I answered honestly.

“I regret waiting so long.”

He looked down.

“I wish I'd noticed sooner.”

“So do I.”

He nodded.

Then I reached across the table and touched his hand.

“But I don't regret helping you raise your family. I love those children more than I can explain.”

“I know, Mom.”

“I only wish I'd remembered that my own life mattered too.”

He squeezed my hand.

“Dad would be proud of you.”

I looked toward the window.

I imagined Robert sitting across from us, smiling in that quiet way he had when he thought I was finally understanding something he had tried to tell me for years.

“I think he'd be happy to see me painting again.”

Michael laughed.

“Even with the purple sky?”

“Especially with the purple sky.”

We finished breakfast.

Then we went our separate ways.

I returned to the cottage and spent the afternoon working on another painting.

This one was a garden.

The roses were not quite the right shade, and I made the lavender too dark.

But I enjoyed the work.

I was learning to let something be imperfect without treating it as a failure.

That lesson extended beyond painting.

I was learning not to expect every family conversation to end perfectly.

I was learning that Lauren and I might never become close friends, but we could still develop a more respectful relationship.

I was learning that Michael could make mistakes without being a bad son.

And I was learning that I could love them all without returning to the role I had occupied for five years.

Lauren began inviting me to family activities more often.

She asked rather than assuming.

If I said I was busy, she accepted it.

Sometimes she asked whether I could help with the children, and sometimes I agreed.

The difference was that my answer mattered.

One afternoon, she called to ask whether I could watch Benjamin while she attended an appointment.

I checked my calendar.

I had no plans that afternoon.

“Yes, I can help.”

“Thank you, Dorothy. I really appreciate it.”

I paused.

It was the first time in a long while that I had heard her express appreciation before the favor was done.

“You're welcome.”

Benjamin arrived with his backpack and a small toy.

We read books, played in the garden, and checked the strawberry plants.

He wanted to know whether they had grown overnight.

“They're getting there,” I told him.

He crouched beside them.

“I think this one is bigger.”

“Perhaps it is.”

He looked up at me.

“Grandma, can I come here when the strawberries are ready?”

“Of course.”

He grinned.

I was happy to help him.

But when Lauren returned, I handed Benjamin's things back to her and said goodbye without taking on anything else.

I did not start preparing dinner.

I did not reorganize the backpack.

I did not ask what else needed doing.

I had helped because I wanted to.

Then I returned to my own afternoon.

That was the balance I had been trying to find.

Not distance.

Not punishment.

Choice.

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Lauren Invited Me to Michael’s Birthday Dinner, and When She Called Me a Guest, I Realized She Might Finally Be Seeing Me Differently

Spring arrived slowly that year.
