truth.

Neither did I.

I didn't know how to live in a world where my sons were dead.

I didn't know how to explain death to Emma.

I didn't know how to look at their photographs without imagining the lives they would never have.

I didn't know whether my mother-in-law had done something that contributed to their deaths.

But I knew that pretending everything was normal would not make any of those questions disappear.

“You don't have to solve everything today,” I told him. “Neither do night before the twins died.

I remembered how relieved I had been when Miriam offered to help.

I remembered going upstairs because I thought someone else could take care of the babies for a little while.

I had trusted my family to look after one another.

Now I couldn't return home simply because Trevor wanted the house to feel whole again.

“I need time,” I said.

“How much time?”

“I don't know.”

He exhaled.

“Mom is very upset about what happened at conversation before we could repeat the same arguments.

Then I stood in the hallway, staring at the phone.

I felt guilty.

That was the part I hated most.

Even after everything that had happened, I still felt guilty for making Trevor unhappy.

I still wanted him to tell me that I was doing the right thing.

I still wanted his approval.

Years of trying to keep the peace did not disappear in a single difficult week.

I went back into the kitchen.

Emma looked up at me.

“Was that Daddy?”

“Yes.”

“Is he coming here?”

“Not right now.”

She considered that.

Then she reached for her rabbit.

I sat beside her.

“You can finish your breakfast,” I told her.

She nodded.

I watched her for a moment, then helped her wipe the crumbs from the table.

Later that morning, Detective Alvarez called.

She wanted to confirm a few details about the twins' feeding supplies and arrange the next steps in the investigation.

I told her that nothing had been moved.

She reminded me not to let anyone handle the items before the investigators had made the necessary arrangements.

I agreed.

Then I asked whether there had been any progress.

“We're still gathering information,” she said. “I don't want to give you an answer before we have evidence to support it.”

I understood.

I hated it.

But I understood.

“Will you speak to Emma soon?”

“We're working on arranging the appropriate interview.”

“Please be gentle with her.”

“We will.”

I thanked her and ended the call.

Rachel came into the kitchen while I was putting away the dishes.

“Was that the detective?”

“Yes.”

“Anything new?”

“Not yet.”

Rachel leaned against the counter.

I could tell she wanted to ask more.

She didn't.

Instead, she handed me a clean dish towel.

We stood together, drying the last few plates.

I realized how much I needed her quiet company.

With Rachel, I didn't have to prove that I was upset enough.

I didn't have to explain why I couldn't return home.

I didn't have to defend my decision to keep Emma away from Miriam.

I could simply be a woman who had lost two children and was trying to care for the one who remained.

That afternoon, Emma asked whether she could draw a picture.

Rachel found paper and crayons.

Emma sat at the table and drew a house with a red roof.

She drew herself beside the front door.

Then she drew me.

She gave me long arms.

When I asked why, she said they were for hugs.

I had to turn away for a moment.

I didn't want her to see me crying over a picture she had made to make me happy.

She called me back.

“Mommy, look.”

I looked.

The house was small.

The people were simple shapes.

There was a yellow sun in the corner.

It wasn't a picture of the family we had lost.

It was a picture of the family she still had.

I sat beside her and helped her write her name at the bottom.

For the rest of the afternoon, I tried to stay present.

I listened when she talked.

I answered when she asked questions.

I didn't check my phone every few minutes.

I didn't replay Miriam's words in my head.

I didn't ask Rachel whether she thought Trevor would ever understand.

For a few hours, I let myself be Emma's mother without trying to solve anything else.

That evening, Trevor sent a message asking whether he could speak to Emma.

I stared at the screen.

I didn't want to use my daughter to punish him.

He was her father.

She loved him.

Whatever had happened between the adults, she still deserved a relationship with him if it could be handled safely.

I called Rachel into the room and told her what he had asked.

We agreed that any conversation should be brief and that Emma would not be asked about the investigation.

I called Trevor back.

“You can speak to her,” I said. “But don't ask her about the bottles.”

“I wouldn't do that.”

“And don't tell her Grandma is upset with her.”

“I wouldn't say that either.”

I wanted to believe him.

I handed the phone to Emma.

She spoke to her father for a few minutes.

She told him about the drawing.

She told him that Rachel had made pancakes.

She asked when he would see her again.

I watched her face as she listened.

I couldn't hear Trevor's words clearly.

But I could see that she was trying to understand something.

When the call ended, she gave the phone back to me.

“Daddy sounded sad.”

I held her hand.

“He is sad.”

“Because of the babies?”

“Yes, sweetheart.”

She leaned against me.

I held her until she was ready to go back to her drawing.

Afterward, I sat alone for a while.

I was beginning to understand that keeping Emma safe didn't mean cutting everyone out of her life.

It meant paying attention to what the adults around her were asking her to carry.

She had already carried a secret that never should have been hers.

I would not let anyone make her responsible for fixing the family.

Source: <a
