Don't try to force a memory.”

I thanked her.

Before ending the call, I asked whether Emma's interview had been arranged.

The detective said the appropriate arrangements were being made.

I didn't press her for a date.

I knew she couldn't promise something simply because I wanted it to happen quickly.

After the call, I wrote down the few details I had been reviewing.

Not theories.

Not accusations.

Just the things I knew I remembered.

I wrote that Miriam had prepared the bottles.

I wrote that she had encouraged me to sleep.

I wrote that Emma had told Pastor Daniel she saw something being put into a bottle and had been instructed to keep it secret.

Then I stopped.

Those were the facts as I understood them.

I didn't know what the substance was.

I didn't know whether Emma had seen one of the twins' bottles or another container.

I didn't know whether what she had seen was connected to the deaths.

I couldn't fill those gaps with fear.

I put the paper into a drawer.

It felt strange to leave the questions unfinished.

For most of my life, I had tried to resolve uncomfortable situations as quickly as possible.

If Miriam was angry, I tried to calm her down.

If Trevor was worried, I tried to reassure him.

If Emma was upset, I tried to find the reason.

Now I had to accept that some questions needed to remain open until there was enough evidence to answer them.

That evening, Trevor came to Rachel's house to see Emma.

We had agreed beforehand that he would not discuss the investigation with her.

He arrived carrying a small bag of groceries.

I recognized the bag from the shop near our house.

For a moment, I remembered him returning home with groceries on ordinary evenings.

He would put the bags on the counter and ask what we needed.

Sometimes he brought something Emma liked.

Sometimes he forgot an item and went back out to get it.

I had never thought those small habits would become memories I would struggle to look at.

He stood near the doorway.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

His eyes moved past me toward the living room.

“Is Emma here?”

“Yes. She's with Rachel.”

He nodded.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he held out the bag.

“I brought a few things.”

I looked inside.

There was bread, fruit, and a packet of biscuits Emma liked.

I felt a sudden rush of sadness.

He had remembered what she liked.

He was still her father.

He was still the man I had married.

And I was still unable to trust him to understand why his mother's behavior frightened me.

“Thank you,” I said.

He put the bag on the kitchen counter.

Rachel called Emma from the living room.

She came running toward the doorway, then slowed when she saw her father.

“Daddy.”

Trevor crouched and opened his arms.

Emma went to him.

He held her tightly.

I looked away.

There were moments when I wanted to hate him for defending Miriam.

Then I saw him holding our daughter, and I remembered that he had lost Owen and Luke too.

His grief did not excuse his choices.

But it was still grief.

I had to make room for both truths.

Trevor sat with Emma in the living room.

She showed him her drawing.

He asked about the yellow sun.

She explained that the people in the picture were supposed to be us.

I watched from the kitchen doorway.

He listened carefully.

He didn't ask her about the bottles.

He didn't mention his mother.

For a little while, I allowed myself to feel relieved.

After Emma went upstairs with Rachel, Trevor came back into the kitchen.

He looked at the grocery bag.

“Has Alvarez called?”

“Yes.”

“Did she tell you anything?”

“Only that the investigation is continuing.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I keep thinking about that night.”

“So do I.”

“I keep wondering whether I missed something.”

I didn't know how to answer.

I had wondered the same thing.

Had Trevor noticed anything unusual?

Had I?

Had Miriam said something that should have made us question her offer to help?

I didn't want to turn those questions into accusations.

“I don't know what either of us could have noticed,” I said. “We need to let the investigators establish what happened.”

He nodded slowly.

Then he looked at me.

“Do you think Mom did something?”

I held his gaze.

“I don't know.”

“Clara, I need an honest answer.”

“That is my honest answer.”

He looked away.

I could see how much he wanted me to say no.

I wanted to say no too.

I wanted the investigation to establish that Emma had misunderstood something harmless.

I wanted Miriam's cruelty at the funeral to be separate from the deaths of my sons.

I wanted to discover that the two things had no connection.

But I couldn't promise him that.

I couldn't make myself believe something simply because it would be easier to live with.

“Whatever the answer is,” I said, “we have to be willing to hear it.”

He didn't reply.

I thought he might argue.

Instead, he sat down at the kitchen table.

For a few minutes, we remained there without speaking.

The grocery bag sat between us.

I could see the packet of biscuits through the open top.

I remembered buying those biscuits for Emma when she was younger.

She used to break them into pieces and leave half on her plate.

Sometimes I had eaten the leftovers while cleaning up.

I had never thought of that as anything worth remembering.

Now I understood that ordinary life was made of thousands of moments that seemed unimportant until they were gone.

Trevor finally stood.

“I should go.”

I nodded.

He walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned back.

“I don't want to lose you and Emma too.”

I looked at him.

“You haven't lost us.”

He seemed relieved.

Then I continued.

“But I can't pretend that nothing has changed.”

His expression fell.

I didn't soften the words.

I couldn't.

He left a moment later.

I closed the door and stood in the hallway.

I felt guilty for hurting him.

I also felt a small sense of relief.

For once, I had said what I meant without changing it to make someone else comfortable.

Later that night, after Emma had gone to bed, I sat with Rachel in the kitchen.

The grocery bag was still on the counter.

Rachel put the biscuits into the cupboard.

Then she made tea.

I held the warm cup between my hands.

“Do you think Trevor believes me?” I asked.

Rachel considered the question.

“I think he believes you're hurting.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No,” she said. “It isn't.”

I stared at the tea.

“I don't want to accuse anyone unfairly.”

“Then don't. Keep telling the truth about what you know and what you don't know.”

I looked at her.

She had said almost the same thing Detective Alvarez had said.

I realized that I had been looking for someone to give me permission to trust my own judgment.

I didn't need permission to tell the truth.

I didn't need to decide what happened before the evidence was available.

I didn't need to protect Miriam from questions simply because she was family.

And I didn't need to punish Trevor for being frightened.

I could wait for the investigation while still keeping boundaries around Emma.

I could grieve my sons without turning every memory into a possible clue.

I could acknowledge that I had trusted Miriam without blaming myself for that trust.

Those things could exist together.

I finished my tea.

Then I went upstairs to check on Emma.

Her rabbit was tucked beneath her chin.

The bedroom door was open.

I stood beside her bed and listened to her breathing.

I had no new answers.

I had no evidence that explained why Owen and Luke had died.

But I knew what I would do if someone tried to make Emma responsible for the truth.

I would protect her.

I would let the investigators ask the necessary questions in the right way.

And I would not let anyone convince me that a mother's love could be measured by how quietly she suffered.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Had Spent Days Waiting for Someone to Explain the Bottles, but the Hardest Questions Were Still the Ones I Asked Myself

I spent the next few days trying to wait without turning every quiet moment into a new question.
