But I don't want every decision to feel like I'm doing something without him."

I understood what he meant.

After Jack died, I had sometimes felt guilty about ordinary happiness.

I would laugh at something, then remember that he wasn't there to hear it.

I would enjoy a meal, then think about how much he had loved certain foods.

I would make plans for the following week and feel the absence of the son who would never make plans of his own again.

It was as though moving forward meant leaving him behind.

But perhaps that wasn't true.

Perhaps remembering him didn't require me to remain exactly where I had been when he died.

"Jack wanted you to have a life," I said.

Theo looked at me.

"I know."

"And I think he would want you to enjoy it."

He nodded slowly.

We didn't say much more about it.

We didn't need to.

Later that week, I found myself thinking about the promise again.

At the funeral, I had believed Theo's decision was strange because I couldn't see beyond the dress.

I had assumed that the way he honored Jack should look the way I expected grief to look.

I had expected quiet clothes, quiet words, and quiet behavior.

But grief didn't belong to me alone.

Theo had his own way of carrying it.

Jack had understood that.

He had given his friend a promise that allowed him to express his loss through something they had shared.

It was silly.

It was personal.

It was theirs.

And it had helped Theo stand in front of a room full of people when standing there was the last thing he wanted to do.

I wondered how many other times I had mistaken someone else's grief for something I couldn't understand.

How many times had I expected people to react in ways that made sense to me?

How many times had I assumed silence meant indifference?

Or laughter meant someone wasn't hurting?

I couldn't answer those questions.

But I knew I would think differently the next time I saw someone grieving in a way I didn't recognize.

The lesson had not come easily.

It had come through the loss of my son and the humiliation of realizing that I had nearly hurt someone who had done so much for him.

I wished I had learned it another way.

I wished Jack had lived long enough for me to tell him what I had learned.

But I couldn't change the past.

I could only decide what to do with it.

So I tried to listen more carefully.

When someone spoke about Jack, I let them finish.

When Theo told a story, I didn't rush to fill in the details.

When a memory made me sad, I tried not to push it away simply because it hurt.

I began to understand that grief wasn't a problem I could solve.

It was something I would carry.

And I didn't have to carry it in only one way.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Years Later, I Still Remember the Boy in Red, but I No Longer See the Dress Before I See the Friendship

I used to think hope meant believing that things would turn out well.
