12 – I Could Never Give Jack Back the Future He Wanted, but I Could Carry His Last Lesson Into Every Day That Followed

I still think about the morning Theo entered the chapel.

I remember the red dress before I remember anything else.

Then I remember Daniel rising from his seat.

I remember the whispers.

I remember the way I caught my husband's arm and asked him to wait.

At the time, I believed I was protecting my son's funeral from something inappropriate.

I didn't understand that I was about to make the day harder for someone who was already grieving.

Theo had come to keep a promise.

He had spent years beside Jack.

He had been there when my son was tired, frightened, or simply unable to face another difficult afternoon alone.

He had listened when Jack wanted to talk.

He had stayed when Jack didn't.

And he had agreed to something ridiculous because his best friend had asked him to.

The dress had seemed strange to me.

The promise had seemed impossible until Theo explained it.

That was the truth I had missed.

I had seen the red fabric and assumed I understood the person wearing it.

I had been wrong.

I wish Jack could have lived long enough for me to tell him what that day taught me.

I wish he could have sat at the kitchen table and listened while I described Theo's speech.

I wish I could have told him how many people laughed when Theo repeated his jokes.

I wish I could have asked him whether he had expected everyone to react exactly as they did.

But I cannot have that conversation.

My son died seventeen days after turning eighteen.

Cancer took him fourteen months after his diagnosis.

Those facts have not changed.

Neither has the empty space he left in our lives.

Daniel and I still miss him.

There are days when a memory arrives so suddenly that I have to stop what I'm doing.

There are moments when I want to tell him something and remember, before I can speak, that he will never hear it.

Grief remains part of our lives.

But it no longer means that every memory must end in pain.

Sometimes I remember Jack burning a sandwich and laugh.

Sometimes I think about the way he argued over Monopoly rules and smile.

Sometimes I see the photograph of him and Theo covered in mud and feel grateful that I took it.

And sometimes I remember the funeral and feel thankful that I stopped Daniel before he reached the aisle.

I am thankful that Theo had the chance to speak.

I am thankful that he read Jack's note.

I am thankful that I listened.

Those things did not save my son.

They did not make his death less unfair.

But they helped me understand the person I had lost.

Jack had been funny.

He had been stubborn.

He had been thoughtful.

He had been frightened sometimes.

He had also remained hopeful.

I used to think those qualities contradicted one another.

I thought a person who believed in the future should not talk about dying.

I thought a person who was brave should not admit fear.

I thought a person who was grieving should look sad all the time.

Jack and Theo taught me otherwise.

Jack could make plans for college while asking his friend to prepare for a funeral.

Theo could be devastated by losing Jack and still make people laugh with a promise about a red dress.

I could be angry and confused when Theo entered the chapel, then feel ashamed and grateful when I learned the truth.

Human beings are rarely as simple as our first impressions make them seem.

I understand that now.

I try to remember it when I meet someone whose choices confuse me.

I try to remember it when a person laughs at a difficult moment.

I try to remember it when someone says very little about a loss that has changed their life.

I try to ask what I don't know.

Sometimes I still get things wrong.

I am human.

But I no longer believe that my first explanation must be the correct one.

That is part of what Jack left me.

The lesson was not written in the note.

It was in the space between the moment I judged Theo and the moment I finally listened to him.

It was in the way my son had trusted his friend with a promise.

It was in the way Theo had kept that promise even when he knew people might misunderstand.

And it was in the way the chapel changed once the truth was spoken.

The whispers stopped.

People listened.

Some laughed.

Some cried.

My husband lowered his head.

And I stood up to embrace a young man I had nearly asked to leave.

I cannot change those first few minutes.

But I can remember them honestly.

I can admit that grief made me quick to judge.

I can admit that I had nearly mistaken an act of love for an act of disrespect.

And I can be grateful that Theo gave us the chance to understand.

Years have passed since that day.

Theo has continued building his life.

He graduated from college.

He has plans of his own.

Daniel and I attended his graduation and watched him walk across the stage.

Afterward, he hugged us and joked that he had nearly worn red.

Daniel told him not to try it.

Theo laughed.

I laughed, too.

We gave him Jack's black wristwatch that day.

It was an ordinary object, but it had belonged to our son.

Theo had been reluctant to accept it.

I told him Jack would have wanted him to have it.

He cried.

So did I.

I watched him hold the watch and thought about all the things Jack had wanted to do.

I thought about the places he had hoped to visit.

I thought about the college years he would never experience.

I thought about the ordinary days he should have had.

Those thoughts still hurt.

But I no longer believe that remembering what Jack lost means I must ignore what Theo has gained.

Theo has a future.

He deserves to live it.

He deserves to make mistakes, to change his mind, to find happiness, and to discover things Jack never had the chance to see.

And he deserves to remember his best friend without feeling that every new experience is a betrayal.

I believe Jack would have wanted that for him.

I believe it because of the boy I knew.

The boy who made room for Theo in our house.

The boy who stayed beside his friend when he needed someone.

The boy who could make a joke out of a frightening conversation without pretending the fear wasn't real.

And the boy who left behind a note reminding his best friend not to abandon a promise just because he was no longer there to enforce it.

I still have the photograph of the two boys covered in mud.

I still remember the terrible bird they blamed for the broken window.

I still remember the way Jack insisted that the bank had insurance whenever he cheated at Monopoly.

Those memories belong to a life that was far too short.

But they are still a life.

Jack was not only the illness that took him away.

He was not only the funeral.

He was not only the red dress.

He was a boy who loved his family, cared about his friends, and wanted to see what the future held.

And for a while, he got to live that life.

He laughed.

He made plans.

He kept making jokes.

He loved his best friend.

That is what I want people to remember.

Not because it makes losing him easier.

Because it makes the memory of him more complete.

When I think of the red dress now, I no longer see a young man dressed in a way I couldn't understand.

I see Theo standing beside the microphone, holding a folded note in his pocket.

I see him trying to steady his voice.

I hear him explain that he came because Jack asked him to.

And I remember the promise between two boys who had grown up together and had never needed to explain their friendship to anyone else.

Until that day.

The dress was red.

The promise was kept.

And my son was remembered not only for the way he died, but for the way he lived.

I cannot give Jack back the future he wanted.

I cannot bring him home.

I cannot ask him the questions I should have asked while he was still here.

But I can carry the lesson he left behind.

I can listen.

I can wait before judging.

I can remember that a person may be carrying something I cannot see.

And I can try to be kinder when I don't understand.

That is what I learned from the boy in the red dress.

That is what I learned from my son's final months.

And that is what I hope I never forget.

Source: <a
