Then they told everyone I had authorized it.”

Opal didn't interrupt.

I explained that I had established Buckeye Medical Supply in a small rented shop.

In the beginning, I had done almost everything myself.

I contacted clinics, negotiated prices, checked deliveries, and followed up on invoices.

Trevor eventually took over sales.

Monica handled administration and financial processing.

As the business grew, I allowed them to take on more responsibility.

I thought that was what a successful company required.

I thought trusting people close to me was a reasonable way to build something lasting.

Looking back, I know I should have separated our responsibilities more carefully.

But poor oversight and deliberate fraud are not the same thing.

I had to remind myself of that distinction every time someone implied that my mistakes as a business owner made me responsible for what happened afterward.

The trouble began when my mother-in-law, Loretta, became seriously ill.

She needed medical treatment, and I spent weeks accompanying her to appointments and hospital procedures.

I was exhausted.

Some mornings, I left the house before sunrise and returned after dark.

I continued checking company messages whenever I could, but I wasn't physically present at the office as often as I had been.

During that period, financial transfers began appearing under my credentials.

The money went to a supplier called Halston Ridge Supply.

I had never ordered equipment from that company.

I hadn't received its products.

And I couldn't explain why our records showed that I had approved the payments.

When investigators questioned me, Trevor claimed I had instructed him to arrange the transactions.

Monica produced paperwork that appeared to support his statement.

I denied everything.

My attorney tried to challenge the evidence, but we couldn't establish who had actually initiated the transactions or whether the records had been altered.

The prosecution had documents bearing my name.

It had my husband's testimony.

It had my sister's records.

I had my word.

The jury found me guilty.

Opal set her spoon down.

She didn't look shocked.

She looked angry, although not at me.

“Did you keep any of your old records?”

“A few copies.”

“Where are they?”

“I hid them before the police arrested me. Trevor could request them, but he couldn't approve them independently.”

Russell examined another page.

Then he pointed to a small administrative code beside one of the transactions.

“Do you know what this identifier means?”

I leaned forward.

MH-17.

I knew those characters.

I had seen them during the trial.

“Monica used that code.”

“Were you able to explain it to your attorney?”

“The prosecution said it identified the person who entered the transaction. They argued it didn't tell us who had authorized it.”

Russell nodded.

“That may be correct. We can't establish authorization from this code alone. We need the original transaction records.”

I felt the familiar disappointment rising in my chest.

I had hoped the code would be enough.

One small detail that would finally make someone understand.

Instead, it was another question.

But Russell wasn't dismissing it.

He was telling me what it could and couldn't prove.

That mattered.

He asked me to reconstruct the sequence of events surrounding the disputed payments.

I would need to identify dates, hospital visits, conversations, and any messages that might establish who had access to my telephone or banking credentials.

I returned to Opal's house and began working.

For three evenings, I sat at the kitchen table with a notebook, a calendar, and the handful of records I had managed to preserve.

I wrote down everything I could remember.

Some details came easily.

Others required me to close my eyes and think about where I had been, whom I had spoken to, and what had happened immediately before or after a particular transaction.

Eventually, I found a date that made me stop writing.

June 18, 2021.

The prosecution's records stated that I had approved an eighty-nine-thousand-dollar transfer at 11:43 that morning.

I remembered that day.

I had accompanied Loretta to a medical procedure.

Trevor had asked me to hand Monica my telephone so she could resolve a payroll problem.

I remembered doing it because I had been worried about Loretta and wanted the interruption to end.

Monica kept my phone for nearly two hours.

At the time, I hadn't thought anything of it.

She was my sister.

She worked for my company.

I had no reason to believe she would use my access to approve a payment I had never seen.

I stared at the date until the numbers began to blur.

It wasn't proof.

I knew that.

But it gave me something specific to investigate.

I requested the hospital records that were still available and gathered the emails in which Monica had asked to use my telephone.

I sent copies to Russell.

Then I contacted an attorney named Helen Marsh, whom Russell recommended for reviewing the criminal proceedings.

Helen examined the documents and explained that overturning a conviction required more than repeating the original defense.

We needed new evidence capable of supporting a proper legal challenge.

I listened carefully.

I had no intention of building my future around another promise.

This time, I wanted facts.

A few days later, Helen helped arrange a formal interview with Gordon Pierce, Buckeye Medical Supply's former accountant.

I remembered Gordon as a careful man who rarely spoke unless he had something useful to say.

He had left the company before my conviction.

I didn't know whether he would agree to see me.

When he arrived, he carried an old folder under one arm.

He looked at me for several seconds before sitting down.

“Rebecca,” he said quietly, “there's something I should have told you years ago.”

He placed the folder on the table.

And when he opened it, I saw documents I had never known existed.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Former Accountant Arrived With a Battered Folder, and One Date on a Company Document Could Finally Challenge My Sister’s Story

My fingers tightened around the spoon.
