6 – The Records Kept Leading Back to My Sister, but I Had to Decide Whether I Wanted My Old Life Back or Something Entirely Different

I used to believe that getting my old life back would solve everything.

I thought that if I could recover my house and regain control of Buckeye Medical Supply, the years in prison would become something I had survived rather than something that continued to shape me.

I was wrong about part of that.

Recovering what had been taken from me mattered.

But it couldn't make me the woman I had been before.

I discovered this while reviewing a list of Buckeye's former customers.

Russell had asked me to identify the clinics associated with certain invoices.

I recognized the names immediately.

Some had been customers for years.

Others had placed orders during the period when the company was expanding.

I remembered the people who worked there.

I remembered the calls I had made to secure contracts.

I remembered how proud I had been when a small clinic chose us over a larger distributor.

Then I looked at the notes beside those accounts.

Several customers had stopped ordering after the company became entangled in its financial problems.

Others had moved to different suppliers.

Some had never returned.

I closed the folder.

The company still existed, but the business I had built had been damaged beyond anything I could repair with a signature.

For the first time, I allowed myself to consider that I might not want to restore every part of it.

That frightened me.

Buckeye had been my identity for so long that I wasn't sure who I would be without it.

I had built the business from nothing.

I had worked through weekends and missed social gatherings to keep it growing.

I had believed the company was proof that I could make something lasting.

Then I had watched it become part of the case that sent me to prison.

I couldn't separate those memories as neatly as I wanted.

Russell noticed my hesitation when we met to discuss the records.

“You don't have to decide what the company should become today,” he said.

“I know.”

“But you do need to decide what you're willing to take responsibility for if you regain control.”

I looked at him.

He wasn't asking whether I wanted revenge.

He was asking whether I understood the work ahead.

I appreciated the difference.

“I want to see the complete financial picture first,” I told him.

“That's sensible.”

We continued reviewing the accounts.

The disputed transfers remained central to the investigation, but there were also ordinary business problems that had accumulated while I was absent.

Unpaid invoices.

Outstanding obligations.

Customers who had lost confidence.

Records that needed to be reconstructed.

I couldn't treat every debt as evidence of fraud.

Some debts were simply debts.

Some losses came from the way the company had been managed after my arrest.

Others had begun earlier.

I needed to distinguish among them.

It was the kind of work I had once done without thinking.

Now each figure reminded me of something I had lost.

I kept going.

Meanwhile, Helen continued pursuing the mortgage dispute.

The records showed that the instrument used to support the lien relied on my earlier limited authorization.

The document had been presented as though it granted broader powers than I had actually given.

That was the issue we needed the court to examine.

I learned to stop calling the property matter solved before it was resolved.

My house remained titled in my name, but the lien created a serious obstacle.

I couldn't simply return, change the locks, and pretend the mortgage didn't exist.

There were procedures to follow.

There were rights and obligations that had to be addressed.

Helen kept me informed.

When she couldn't give me a definite answer, she told me so.

That honesty became one of the things I relied on most.

I no longer needed every person around me to be certain.

I needed them to be honest about what they knew.

One afternoon, I went with Helen to review another set of records.

She had been examining the original limited power of attorney and the documentation associated with the mortgage.

The more we compared the papers, the clearer the discrepancy became.

My original authorization had been restricted to administrative matters.

It did not permit Trevor to mortgage the house.

It did not permit him to sell it.

It did not give him the right to use the property as security for an obligation without my approval.

The instrument cited in the mortgage records did not match those limits.

Helen explained that the discrepancy supported our challenge, but the court still had to determine the legal consequences.

I nodded.

I had learned that a strong argument was not the same thing as a final ruling.

We submitted the documents and waited.

During that period, Monica sent no direct messages to me.

I heard about her position through the legal proceedings.

She maintained that she had followed company procedures and acted according to instructions she believed I had given.

I wondered how she could continue saying that.

She had known me all my life.

She had watched me build the company.

She had been present when I struggled through Loretta's illness.

She knew how much I trusted her.

I wanted to ask her whether she remembered any of that.

I wanted to know whether she had ever thought about the moment she decided to use my credentials.

But I didn't contact her.

There was nothing I could gain from a conversation that would take place without the protection of the legal process.

And I was no longer willing to place my emotional stability in her hands.

I began making a habit of writing down the questions I wanted to ask her.

Not because I intended to send them.

I wrote them so I could acknowledge what I was feeling without allowing those feelings to decide my next action.

Some questions were about the money.

Some were about the company.

Others were about our childhood.

I kept the pages in a folder separate from the legal records.

The distinction helped.

One set of papers was meant to establish what had happened.

The other held the questions I might never have answered.

At Opal's house, life continued in small routines.

I made breakfast.

She watered the plants.

We took turns deciding what to eat for dinner, although she usually found a reason to suggest soup.

I started looking forward to those evenings.

There was no need to explain myself.

If I was quiet, Opal didn't assume I was hiding something.

If I was angry, she let me be angry without treating it as a crisis.

Sometimes she asked whether I wanted to talk.

Sometimes she simply put a cup of tea beside me.

I had forgotten that support could be so undemanding.

One Sunday, she found me looking at an old photograph of Buckeye's first rented shop.

The building was small.

The sign above the door was crooked.

I was standing outside with my arms crossed, trying to look more confident than I felt.

Opal took the photograph from me.

“You look very serious.”

“I thought I had to look like I knew everything.”

“Did you?”

“Not even close.”

She smiled.

“Neither did I when I was your age.”

I looked at the picture again.

“I don't know if I can rebuild it.”

“Then don't decide that you must.”

I turned toward her.

“What if I lose the only thing I was good at?”

Opal shook her head.

“Rebecca, you were good at building a business. You were also good at getting out of bed every morning when your life was falling apart. Those are not the same skill.”

I had no answer.

She returned the photograph.

I placed it in the folder with the company records.

For years, I had believed my value depended on what I could build and maintain.

Prison had taken almost everything I could point to as proof of success.

Opal was helping me understand that losing those things hadn't erased every ability I possessed.

I could still learn.

I could still work.

I could still make decisions.

And I could choose not to rebuild something simply because I had once devoted my life to it.

The financial investigation continued.

Russell examined additional banking records and compared them with the documents Gordon had retained.

The pattern involving Halston Ridge Supply remained important.

The payments had no matching equipment deliveries.

Some of the money had moved to accounts associated with other businesses.

The records supported further scrutiny of Trevor's involvement.

Gordon continued cooperating with the authorities.

He had spent years carrying the knowledge that his concerns about the accounting had not been resolved.

I sometimes wondered what it had cost him to keep those papers.

When we spoke, I thanked him for preserving them.

He looked uncomfortable.

“I should have done more at the time.”

“You kept records that mattered,” I said. “That counts for something.”

He nodded, but I could tell he still blamed himself.

I understood that feeling.

For a long time, I had blamed myself for trusting Trevor and Monica.

I had replayed every decision, searching for the exact moment I should have realized something was wrong.

There were things I could have done differently.

I could have required stronger financial controls.

I could have separated access more carefully.

I could have examined the credit-line request before agreeing to revisit it later.

Those were lessons I could carry forward.

But I couldn't make myself responsible for decisions other people had chosen to make.

That distinction became important when I began planning what I might do with the rest of my life.

I wasn't ready to start another company.

I wasn't ready to decide whether Buckeye should continue operating.

First, I wanted the property dispute settled.

Then I wanted a clear picture of the company's debts and remaining assets.

After that, I would decide what made sense.

It was a modest plan.

For the first time in years, modest felt like enough.

A few weeks later, Helen called with an update.

The property proceedings were moving forward, and the evidence supporting our challenge to the mortgage had become more substantial.

There were still legal steps to complete.

But we were no longer relying solely on my recollection of what I had signed.

We had the original authorization, the recorded instrument, and the associated documents.

I thanked her.

Then I went outside and sat on Opal's back steps.

The air was cool.

A few leaves had collected near the fence.

I thought about the gray sedan that had once frightened me because I couldn't tell who was watching the house.

I thought about the envelope Monica had left beside the sheets.

At the time, I had believed she could still take everything from me.

Now I understood that the threats had been designed to make me surrender before the evidence could be examined.

I had almost accepted the idea that resistance was pointless.

Almost.

I went back inside and put the property papers in their folder.

The investigation was continuing.

The company still needed answers.

And I still had a decision to make about the kind of future I wanted.

But I no longer believed I had to choose that future while somebody else held the power to frighten me into silence.

Source: <a
