9 – I Regained Control of the Company I Had Built, but the Empty House Forced Me to Admit That Getting Everything Back Was Not the Same as Healing

The first thing I did after the ownership proceedings were resolved was call Helen.

I wanted to make sure I understood every part of the decision before I made another move.

She explained that the improper transfer of my company shares had been invalidated and that the remaining formalities were being completed.

For the first time since my arrest, I could begin planning around the fact that Buckeye Medical Supply was mine to control again.

I didn't celebrate.

I opened my notebook and wrote down the questions I needed to answer.

How much debt remained?

Which assets were still usable?

Which customers might return?

And was rebuilding the company actually the right decision?

The questions looked simple on paper.

They weren't.

I had once known every corner of Buckeye's operations.

Now I had to examine the business as though I were evaluating a company I had never owned.

I began with the outstanding accounts.

Some creditors had been waiting for payments for years.

Others had already made arrangements to recover what they could.

I couldn't assume that every debt resulted from Trevor's actions.

Some obligations were legitimate.

Some expenses had accumulated during the company's decline.

And some transactions still required closer examination.

I worked with the accountants to separate what could be established from what remained disputed.

It was slow work.

But I wanted the numbers to mean something before I made decisions based on them.

We reviewed the remaining equipment and the condition of the company's records.

We identified unnecessary expenses and projects that no longer made sense.

I had spent years believing growth was always a sign of success.

Now I understood that keeping a business alive sometimes meant making it smaller.

I sold equipment we no longer needed.

I discontinued projects that would have required money we couldn't afford to spend.

I spoke with creditors and explained what I could realistically pay.

Some agreed to negotiate.

Others wanted their money immediately.

I couldn't blame them for asking.

They had their own businesses to protect.

A few former employees contacted me when they learned I had regained control.

Some wanted to know whether their old positions might return.

Others simply wanted to tell me they were glad the court had recognized my innocence.

I thanked them.

I didn't promise anyone a job I couldn't guarantee.

That was another thing prison had taught me.

Good intentions didn't make a promise realistic.

I needed to know what I could deliver before asking anyone else to trust me.

One former employee told me she had never believed I would knowingly steal from the company.

I wanted to ask why she hadn't said so when it mattered.

Instead, I thanked her for telling me.

She had her own life.

I couldn't expect everyone to have risked their livelihood for me.

I had already spent enough time imagining what other people should have done.

I needed to focus on what I could do now.

The house required attention, too.

I returned several times to inspect the damage and make a list of repairs.

The water stains were worse than I had first realized.

Some furnishings were missing.

The yard needed clearing.

The rooms held reminders of my marriage that I wasn't ready to face all at once.

I began with the practical work.

I arranged for the damaged areas to be assessed.

I replaced a few basic items.

I had the locks checked.

I didn't rush to restore the house to the way it had looked before I went to prison.

That version of the house belonged to a different part of my life.

I wasn't sure I wanted to recreate it.

The missing photograph of my father bothered me most.

I searched the drawers and cupboards again, hoping I had overlooked it.

I checked a storage space near the stairs.

I looked behind the shelves in the living room.

Nothing.

I had no proof that Trevor or Monica had taken it.

It might have been moved, packed away, or lost during the years I was absent.

Still, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

The photograph had been ordinary.

My father stood beside me outside the first shop I rented for Buckeye.

He was smiling.

I remembered how proud he had been when I told him the business had secured its first substantial clinic contract.

I wished I had kept another copy.

Instead of searching endlessly, I wrote the photograph on my list of missing belongings.

Then I put the list away.

I couldn't recover every object that had disappeared.

I could decide what I wanted to keep from the life that remained.

A few weeks later, I invited Opal to visit the house.

She walked through the rooms slowly.

She examined the damaged wall and looked through the kitchen cabinets.

Then she stood in the doorway of the bedroom overlooking the garden.

“This one gets the best light,” she said.

I smiled.

“You can have it if we move in together.”

She turned toward me.

“You're still serious about that?”

“Yes.”

She looked out at the garden.

“I don't want you to feel responsible for me.”

“I don't.”

“People sometimes confuse gratitude with obligation.”

“I know.”

I stepped beside her.

“You gave me a place to stay when I had nowhere else to go. But that's not why I want you here now. I want to share my home with you because I feel safe around you.”

She didn't answer immediately.

I let the silence remain.

Finally, she looked at me.

“Then we'll discuss the practical arrangements before I agree to anything.”

I laughed.

“Of course we will.”

“Someone has to make sure you don't put the bills in the wrong drawer.”

I laughed harder.

It was the kind of conversation I had missed without realizing how much.

We discussed expenses, rooms, and the things Opal wanted to keep from her own house.

She insisted on maintaining her independence.

I insisted that she shouldn't feel like a guest in mine.

We eventually agreed that she would move in after the necessary repairs were finished and we had both made the arrangements we needed.

It wasn't a grand declaration.

It was a practical decision between two people who had come to care about each other.

I found that I preferred it that way.

The criminal proceedings against Trevor and Monica continued while I worked on the company and the house.

Their attorneys responded to the allegations.

The authorities examined the evidence.

The financial records and questionable corporate documents remained central to the case.

I didn't follow every development personally.

Helen kept me informed when something required my attention.

I had learned that constantly checking for news didn't make a decision arrive any sooner.

Some days, I could focus on invoices for hours without thinking about the case.

Other days, a name or a date would bring everything back.

I was especially affected when I reviewed the old company records associated with the disputed payments.

I remembered the woman who had approved ordinary business expenses without imagining that someone might use her credentials against her.

I didn't blame that woman for trusting people.

I did wish she had protected herself more carefully.

Both thoughts could be true.

I began making a list of the controls I would require if Buckeye continued operating.

No single person would have unrestricted authority over every stage of a payment.

Large transfers would require independent approval.

Supporting documents would be retained systematically.

Financial access would be reviewed regularly.

I wanted a company in which trust and accountability could exist together.

That was something I should have built years earlier.

I couldn't change the past.

But I could refuse to repeat the same mistakes.

One evening, I sat in the empty living room of my house.

The repairs were underway, but I hadn't brought much furniture back.

The room looked larger without the things that had once filled it.

I thought about the woman who had left for prison.

She had believed her marriage was secure.

She had believed her sister would protect her.

She had believed that the company she built would remain hers if she worked hard enough.

I felt sorry for her.

I also understood that I could no longer live as though my purpose was to restore every part of her life exactly as it had been.

That woman had loved people who betrayed her.

She had made mistakes.

She had built something valuable.

And she had survived a terrible loss.

I didn't need to erase her.

I needed to let her become part of my history instead of my entire future.

When I returned to Opal's house that night, she was sitting in her usual chair.

“How was the house?”

“Quiet.”

“Too quiet?”

I thought about it.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“Then don't make yourself live there alone just because you can.”

I sat down beside her.

For years, I had believed independence meant being able to manage everything without help.

Now I understood that independence also meant choosing whom to let into your life.

I wanted Opal there.

Not because I owed her.

Not because I was afraid of being alone.

Because we had built a relationship that made both of our lives better.

That was enough.

Source: <a
