I said.

He nodded.

Then he returned inside.

I stayed on the porch.

I didn't want to reward an apology simply because it had been spoken.

I wanted to see whether Trevor would continue to act differently after the immediate discomfort had passed.

A few minutes later, Paige came outside.

Her eyes were red.

She closed the door carefully behind her and stood near the steps.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she looked toward the living room window.

"She told us what it was like."

I waited.

Paige rubbed her hands together.

"She said she kept watching the entrance because she thought we'd come back."

Her voice became quieter.

"She said every time somebody walked through the door, she thought it might be us."

I looked at the ground.

That was the part I had imagined all weekend.

I had pictured Grandma sitting beside the window, holding her purse and trying to convince herself that there was still a reasonable explanation.

Hearing Paige describe it meant that Grandma had finally told them the truth in her own words.

"She said that waiting was worse than the bill," Paige continued.

I looked at her.

"Of course it was."

Paige nodded.

For once, she didn't argue.

She admitted that she had never heard Grandma sound so disappointed in her.

That sentence stayed with me.

Not because I wanted Paige to feel ashamed.

Because I wanted her to understand that Grandma's affection had never meant she was incapable of being hurt.

Grandma had spent years showing up for Paige and Trevor.

She had celebrated their achievements and helped them when they needed support.

They had become so accustomed to her kindness that they seemed to have forgotten it came from a person with feelings of her own.

Paige looked toward the house again.

"I don't know how to make it right."

I took a breath.

"You can't change Friday."

She nodded.

"But you can stop pretending it was a small mistake."

"I know."

"And you can give her time."

Paige wiped her eyes.

"I will."

She went back inside.

I remained on the porch until I heard the front door open again.

Then Trevor and Paige left.

I didn't follow them to their cars.

I didn't ask what Grandma had said after I had spoken to them.

I waited until the driveway was empty before going inside.

Grandma sat at the kitchen table.

The plate of cookies was still there.

Two cups stood beside the teapot.

She looked tired, but calmer than she had been the previous Friday.

I pulled out the chair beside her.

"How did it go?"

She considered the question.

"It was difficult."

I nodded.

"They apologized."

"Yes."

She touched the edge of one cup.

"They didn't tell me I was being too sensitive. They didn't say I should have known they weren't coming back."

I felt relief.

That was important.

An apology that required the injured person to defend their feelings was not much of an apology.

Grandma had been allowed to describe what happened without somebody interrupting to explain why she shouldn't have felt hurt.

I asked whether she believed Paige and Trevor were sincere.

She took her time answering.

"I believe they're starting to understand."

She stirred her tea.

"But understanding something and earning back trust are different."

I looked at her.

I had wanted to hear her say that.

Not because I wanted her to remain angry.

Because I wanted her to know she didn't have to pretend she felt better simply to make the family comfortable.

She could accept their apologies and still need time.

She could love them and still be cautious.

She could decide to see them again without pretending the restaurant incident had never happened.

"That's fair," I told her.

She smiled faintly.

"I think so."

Then she pushed the plate of cookies toward me.

"Have one before they get cold."

I laughed.

"Grandma, they're already cold."

"Then you have no excuse."

I took a cookie.

It was still slightly warm in the middle.

We sat together at the kitchen table, drinking tea and talking about ordinary things.

For the first time since Friday, the house felt peaceful again.

Not because the family had returned to normal.

Because Grandma had been able to say what she needed to say.

And nobody had asked her to take it back.

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Grandma’s Rules for Future Invitations Sounded Simple, but They Changed the Way Our Family Had Always Expected Her to Behave

I arrived at Grandma's house on Sunday afternoon.
