Mom had finally received an answer to one question, only to be left with a dozen others.

The wooden box beneath my bed held his letters and the brass key.

Sometimes I opened it after school.

I would read a few lines, then put everything back exactly as I had found it.

I wasn't sure what I expected to discover.

Maybe a clue nobody else had noticed.

Maybe a sentence that explained why he hadn't returned.

Nothing new appeared.

Still, I kept looking.

Mom noticed.

One evening, she sat beside me while I examined the old photograph of Dad holding me.

"You don't have to do this every day," she said.

"I know."

"You can miss him without searching for him."

I turned the photograph over.

There was nothing written on the back.

"I don't know how to do that."

Mom rested her hand on my shoulder.

"Neither do I."

That was the first time we admitted we were both learning how to live with the same absence.

A few days later, Eleanor called Mom about the foundation's correction.

The announcement had been published, and the organization had sent copies to the people who had worked with Dad.

His former colleagues would know that the accusation against him had been wrong.

Mom read the notice at the kitchen table.

Then she folded it carefully and placed it inside the wooden box.

I watched her.

"Does this mean everyone will believe him now?"

"I hope so."

"What if they don't?"

She looked at the paper.

"Then they will have to live with being wrong."

I had never heard her speak that way before.

She wasn't angry.

She was tired of asking permission to believe her own husband.

That evening, I helped her prepare dinner.

We didn't have much, but we had enough for both of us. For once, Mom ate without pretending she wasn't hungry.

I noticed.

She noticed me noticing.

"Don't start," she said.

I smiled.

"I didn't say anything."

"You didn't need to."

For the first time in weeks, we laughed together without feeling guilty afterward.

The next morning, I received a message from Eleanor asking whether I wanted to visit the foundation after school.

Mom read it before I answered.

"Do you want to go?"

"Yes."

"Then go."

I looked at her.

"You aren't worried?"

"I am. But being worried doesn't mean I should stop you from learning about the world."

I put the phone away and finished breakfast.

At the foundation, Eleanor showed me the new emergency response materials.

There were instruction cards, demonstration equipment, and diagrams explaining how to contact emergency services.

She asked me what I remembered about the morning I had found her.

"I remember your hand," I said.

She looked surprised.

"It was cold."

She nodded slowly.

"I remember being frightened."

"So was I."

I had never thought about what it must have felt like for her to wake up in a hospital, knowing that a child had stayed beside her when strangers had passed.

She explained that the experience had changed the way she thought about public emergency training.

"We can provide equipment," she said. "We can pay for instruction. But none of it matters if people are too afraid to act."

I thought about the people who had walked past us.

"Some people might not know what to do."

"That's why training matters."

She showed me how the program would teach people to call for help, follow professional instructions, and recognize when someone needed immediate assistance.

I listened carefully.

I wanted to know what I could have done better.

Eleanor noticed my questions.

"You did what you could with what you knew," she said. "Learning more is useful, but you don't need to punish yourself for not being an expert at ten."

I nodded.

I had spent a long time wondering whether I had done enough.

It helped to hear that the answer didn't have to be perfect.

Before I left, Eleanor gave me a small folder containing information about the program.

I carried it home beside my notebook.

Mom was preparing to leave for her evening shift when I arrived.

She glanced at the folder.

"How was it?"

"Good. They are teaching people what to do when someone collapses."

She smiled.

"That sounds important."

"It is."

I placed the folder beside Dad's photograph.

For a moment, the two seemed connected.

One reminded me of the person who had taught me kindness.

The other showed what kindness could become when people worked together.

I didn't say that aloud.

I was still learning how to explain some feelings without making them smaller.

That night, I put the photograph back into the wooden box.

I closed the lid.

Then I went to bed without opening it again.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: When My Mother Began Working at the Foundation, I Discovered That Starting Over Was Harder Than Finding Someone to Blame

For a long time, I thought knowing the truth would make everything easier.
