He didn't know.”

I studied the photograph.

Dad looked younger than I remembered him, although most of my memories of him had already become blurry.

His smile was wide.

His shirt was wrinkled.

My tiny hand was wrapped around his finger.

“What if he thought we would be better without him?”

Mom's face changed.

For a moment, she looked as if she wanted to answer quickly, before the question could hurt either of us.

Instead, she took a breath.

“I can't tell you exactly what your father believed during those years.”

I lowered my eyes.

“But I know he loved you.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I saw the way he held you. I saw the way he talked about you when you were asleep. And because the letter he left behind told us something important.”

She touched the edge of the photograph.

“He wanted you to know he hadn't abandoned you by choice.”

I wanted that to be enough.

Some days, it almost was.

Other days, it felt like holding a piece of a broken cup and pretending I could drink from it.

Mom gathered the papers into a folder.

“We may never know every answer,” she said. “But we know he wasn't the person they accused him of being.”

I nodded.

That was something real.

It was not everything I wanted, but it was something no one could take away from us again.

The following week, Eleanor invited Mom to a small meeting at the foundation.

Mom wore her best blouse and the black shoes she saved for important occasions.

Before she left, she checked her bag three times to make sure she had her identification and the documents Eleanor had requested.

“You don't have to be nervous,” I told her.

“I'm not nervous.”

“You just checked your bag again.”

She looked down at it.

“Perhaps I'm being careful.”

I grinned.

“That's what nervous people say.”

She shook her head, but she was smiling when she left.

I stayed home that afternoon because school had ended early.

When Mom returned, she placed her bag on the table and sat down.

I waited.

She looked at me.

“It's official.”

“What is?”

“The meal program. A proper salary, regular hours, and benefits.”

I jumped up and hugged her.

She laughed against my shoulder.

For years, I had watched her calculate every expense as though a mistake of a few dollars could ruin the entire month.

I had watched her postpone buying shoes because mine needed replacing first.

I had watched her pretend she wasn't hungry when there wasn't enough food for both of us.

Now she had a stable job.

It didn't mean we had become rich.

It meant she could plan beyond the next emergency.

It meant a broken washing machine would not automatically become a disaster.

It meant she could buy groceries without counting every item twice before reaching the register.

When we finally sat down, she showed me the paperwork.

I couldn't understand all the words, but I could understand the salary and the hours.

“You earned this,” I told her.

Mom looked at me carefully.

“Yes,” she said. “I did.”

She did not call it charity.

She did not say Eleanor had rescued us.

She said she had worked hard, and someone had recognized that work.

I liked hearing her say it.

That night, we ate dinner without discussing overdue bills.

We talked about school instead.

I told her about a classmate who had tried to convince our teacher that his unfinished homework had been stolen by a dog.

Mom laughed so hard she nearly dropped her spoon.

For a little while, our lives belonged to us again.

Not to the foundation.

Not to the missing money.

Not to the years of unanswered questions.

Just to a mother and her son eating dinner in a small apartment above a laundromat.

I remember that evening because nothing extraordinary happened.

Nobody arrived with another envelope.

Nobody uncovered another secret.

Nobody promised us a miracle.

We simply finished our food, washed the dishes, and got ready for the next day.

And for the first time in a long while, ordinary life felt like something we were allowed to keep.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: A Different Kind of Responsibility

I used to think that finding the truth would make everything easier.
