13 – The Things That Stayed

The photograph stayed on the kitchen shelf, and Mom kept going to work.

Those two things became part of the rhythm of our lives.

Every morning, I heard her moving around the kitchen before my alarm went off.

She packed her lunch, checked the time, and made sure I had everything I needed for school.

Sometimes she hummed while she worked.

Sometimes she stood quietly by the window with her coffee, looking down at the laundromat entrance.

I knew she still thought about Dad.

I did too.

But we had stopped treating every quiet moment as a sign that something was wrong.

We could miss him without turning every day into a search.

That took time for me to understand.

At school, my teacher asked us to write about someone who had influenced our lives.

Several students chose famous athletes or people they had seen on television.

One boy wrote about a businessman who had built a large company.

Another wrote about a singer whose songs he listened to every day.

I sat with my pencil above the paper for a long time.

I thought about Dad.

Then I thought about Mom.

I thought about Eleanor on the sidewalk, the dispatcher on the phone, and the paramedics who had arrived while I was still frightened.

I thought about the day Caleb fired me.

There were so many people connected to the story that I didn't know where to begin.

Finally, I wrote about Mom.

I wrote about how she kept going when she didn't know how the bills would be paid.

I wrote about how she could be frightened and still make a decision.

I wrote about how she never told me I had to stop missing Dad just because he wasn't there.

When I finished, I read the page again.

It wasn't perfect.

Some sentences were too long, and I had crossed out a word so many times that the paper had become thin.

But the words were mine.

My teacher returned the assignment a few days later.

She had written a short note at the bottom.

She said I had described my mother with honesty and care.

I folded the paper and put it in my schoolbag.

That evening, I showed it to Mom while she was preparing dinner.

She read every line.

When she reached the end, she put the paper down and looked at me.

“You really think all that about me?”

“Yes.”

She looked away for a moment.

I could tell she was trying not to cry.

“Then I hope you remember some of it when you're older,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because there will be days when you forget how much you have already survived.”

I didn't know what to say.

So I helped her put the plates on the table.

We ate dinner together, and afterward, I washed the dishes while she packed the remaining food into containers for the next day.

The assignment stayed on the kitchen counter until bedtime.

Then Mom placed it in a drawer with the important papers.

She didn't put it away with the foundation documents.

She put it beside my school certificates and the small things she had saved from when I was younger.

I liked that.

It belonged to our life now, not to the investigation.

A few weeks later, Eleanor visited the meal program during one of Mom's shifts.

She wore a simple coat and carried a folder under her arm.

The volunteers greeted her, and Mom showed her the distribution area.

I was sitting at a side table doing homework.

Eleanor stopped when she saw me.

“How is school going?”

“Fine.”

“Just fine?”

I shrugged.

“Mostly fine.”

She smiled.

“That sounds more believable.”

I told her about the assignment and how I had written about Mom.

Eleanor listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she said my mother had earned every good word.

Mom pretended to be busy checking a list.

I could see that she had heard us.

Eleanor stayed to speak with the program staff about deliveries and the next month's schedule.

She did not make a speech about how far we had come.

She asked practical questions.

Were the supplies arriving on time?

Were there enough volunteers for the busiest hours?

Did the families know when the distribution schedule changed?

I watched her move from one conversation to another.

She had helped us when she discovered the truth about Dad.

But she was not trying to remain the center of our lives.

She was doing the work that needed to be done.

That mattered to me.

I had once imagined that people who helped others had to be extraordinary.

Now I saw that some of the most useful things they did were ordinary.

They returned phone calls.

They checked lists.

They corrected mistakes.

They listened when someone explained a problem.

They showed up again the next day.

After Eleanor left, Mom and I walked home together.

She carried a bag of supplies that had been left over from the program.

I carried the folder of homework I had finished at the community center.

“Do you like your job?” I asked.

Mom thought about it.

“Yes, I do.”

“Even when it gets busy?”

“Especially when it gets busy, sometimes.”

“Why?”

“Because I can see what needs doing. And when we finish, I know the work has helped someone.”

She adjusted the bag on her shoulder.

“I spent a long time worrying about how we would get through each month. Now I can spend more time thinking about what we can build.”

I looked at her.

“What do you want to build?”

She smiled.

“A life that doesn't fall apart every time something unexpected happens.”

I considered that while we walked.

I thought about the day I had stopped beside Eleanor.

That had been unexpected too.

So had Caleb's decision to fire me.

So had the discovery of Dad's letter and the evidence hidden in the storage crate.

Our lives had changed because of things none of us could have predicted.

Maybe Mom was right.

We couldn't prevent every unexpected thing.

We could only make our lives stronger enough to face some of them.

At home, I placed my homework on the table.

The photograph of Dad was still on the shelf.

I glanced at it before opening my notebook.

For a moment, I wondered whether he would have liked the person I was becoming.

Then I stopped myself.

I could not answer for him.

I could only keep trying to become someone I respected.

Someone who could be frightened without turning away from every difficult thing.

Someone who could make a mistake and admit it.

Someone who could help without needing to be praised.

I returned to my homework.

Downstairs, the laundromat machines started another cycle.

Mom moved around the kitchen, preparing for the next morning.

And our ordinary life continued.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Sidewalk Again

The photograph stayed on the kitchen shelf, and Mom kept going to work.
