We help with overdue rent, utility bills, security deposits, and emergency expenses. The trouble is that we never have enough money for everyone who needs us.”

“How many people are waiting?”

“Twenty-two applications right now.”

“And how much money do you have left?”

“Approximately four thousand dollars.”

I looked through the office window toward the storage room.

I could still see the gray cabinet Walter had repaired.

“What would happen if you had thirty-one thousand dollars?”

Clare went completely still.

“That's a significant donation.”

“I know.”

“Joanne, I want you to think carefully before you make any decision. You've had a difficult day, and I don't want you doing something you'll regret tomorrow.”

I appreciated her honesty.

She had known Walter well enough to understand that I wasn't someone who enjoyed being talked into things.

She also understood that grief could make a person act out of character.

But this wasn't a decision I had invented that afternoon.

I had been thinking about the auction money for months.

Walter's hockey collection had filled shelves in our basement for nearly three decades.

There were old game programs, signed pucks, photographs, ticket stubs, and pieces of equipment he had collected whenever he could find something connected to a team or player he admired.

I never developed his enthusiasm for hockey.

I knew enough to follow a game, but I couldn't have explained why one particular puck was worth more than another.

For Walter, though, every item had a story.

He could hold an old program in his hands and tell me where he had bought it, which game it came from, and who had scored the winning goal.

Sometimes he repeated stories I had already heard a dozen times.

I listened anyway.

After he died, the collection became difficult for me to look at.

It was a reminder of the things he would never get to enjoy again.

Eventually, I contacted an auction house that specialized in sports memorabilia.

The items were sold over several months.

When all the expenses had been paid, I received thirty-one thousand dollars.

I placed it in a savings account.

I hadn't needed the money for my ordinary expenses.

Walter and I had paid off our mortgage years earlier, and my retirement income covered my bills.

I also had savings for emergencies.

The auction proceeds were different.

They felt like the last thing Walter and I had owned together, even though the collection had always been his passion.

I wanted to use the money well.

I just hadn't decided what that meant.

Adam knew about the sale.

He and Renee had been trying to find a larger home for nearly a year.

Their current place was getting cramped as Lily and Noah grew older, and they wanted a yard where the children could play.

When I told Adam how much the auction had brought in, he immediately thought about the house.

“That would make a pretty good down payment, Mom.”

I remembered his expression.

He had sounded hopeful.

I had told him it was a good amount of money.

But I hadn't promised it to him.

He hadn't asked me to contribute anything, either.

That distinction had seemed perfectly clear at the time.

Now I wondered whether he had heard something different in my answer.

Perhaps he had mistaken my willingness to discuss the money for a promise.

Perhaps he had simply allowed himself to imagine a future that depended on money he didn't actually own.

I couldn't know.

I only knew that I had spent months thinking about Westdale.

Walter had given so much of his time to the center that I couldn't think of a more fitting place to honor him.

Clare turned a notepad toward me.

“If you're serious, I can explain exactly where the money would go.”

“Please do.”

She described the families who had fallen behind on rent.

Some had lost jobs.

Others had been hit with unexpected expenses that made it impossible to keep up with ordinary bills.

There were parents trying to keep their children in the same school.

There were older residents who couldn't afford both heating and food.

There were people who had done everything they could to stay independent but had reached the point where one more unpaid bill could put their homes at risk.

Clare wasn't asking me to feel sorry for them.

She was explaining what the money could accomplish.

I looked again at Walter's photograph.

He would have wanted to hear every detail.

He would have asked which families needed help first.

Then he would have found a way to repair something in the building before going home.

I took out my checkbook.

Clare watched me.

“Joanne, you don't have to do this today.”

“I know.”

“You could take a few days to consider it.”

“I've been considering it for months.”

I opened the checkbook to a blank page.

My hand was steady as I wrote the amount.

Thirty-one thousand dollars.

All of it.

I wrote the name of the Westdale Community Resource Center on the payee line.

Then I added a short note beneath the amount.

For Walt.

I passed the check across the desk.

Clare stared at it.

She looked as though she wanted to thank me but couldn't quite find the words.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

She reached across the desk and covered my hand with hers.

“Walter would have been so proud of you.”

That was the first time I cried that afternoon.

Not because of Renee's phone call.

Not because I had been excluded from Christmas.

Because someone had remembered my husband, and because I could do something that would let a part of him continue helping people.

Clare asked whether the center could acknowledge the donation publicly.

I said yes.

She also asked whether she could mention the amount.

That question gave me pause.

I knew Renee followed Westdale's Facebook page.

I knew she might see the announcement.

For one brief moment, I wondered what she would think when she discovered that I had given away the money Adam had hoped might help him buy a house.

I won't pretend I was completely free of resentment.

I had been hurt.

I had been dismissed with a phone call while standing in a grocery store, holding ingredients for a dinner I had believed I was invited to attend.

Part of me wanted Renee to understand that I wasn't sitting at home waiting for her permission to have a life.

But that wasn't why I wrote the check.

The idea had existed long before the invitation disappeared.

I had come to Westdale because I needed somewhere to go.

I had decided to donate because I knew what the money could do.

Those were two different things.

“Yes,” I told Clare. “You can mention the amount.”

She nodded.

“We'll make sure everyone understands that this is in Walter's memory.”

“That's what matters to me.”

Before I left, I asked whether the center needed volunteers on Christmas Day.

Clare smiled.

“We're serving dinner from eleven until three. There's plenty to do.”

“Put me down for the morning.”

“You don't have to spend your Christmas here.”

“I know that, too.”

She wrote my name on the volunteer sheet.

For the first time since Renee's call, I had something to look forward to.

That evening, Adam finally called.

I was in the kitchen putting away the groceries when his name appeared on my phone.

I answered immediately.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

“Mom, I got your message.”

His voice sounded tired.

I waited for him to explain why Renee had canceled the invitation.

Instead, he began talking about Patricia, Renee's mother.

Patricia had been struggling since losing her factory job.

She was also dealing with the separation from her husband, and her financial situation had become worse than she wanted anyone to know.

Adam explained that he and Renee had been trying to work out a way to help her.

They had hoped to buy a house with a basement bedroom where Patricia could live with them.

That was part of the reason they had been looking for a larger property.

“Renee's having a hard time with everything,” Adam said. “She wants Christmas to be about her family this year.”

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

“I understand that Patricia needs support.”

“Then please don't make this more complicated than it needs to be.”

I looked down at the grocery bag beside my feet.

The pecans were still inside.

“I wasn't trying to make anything complicated, Adam. I was invited to spend Christmas with you, and then your wife told me not to come.”

He sighed.

“We've got enough going on right now.”

“I would have understood if you'd called me yourself.”

There was a pause.

I waited for an apology.

Instead, he told me he had to go.

We exchanged brief Christmas wishes and ended the call.

I stood in the kitchen for a long time.

I understood that Patricia was struggling.

I understood that Adam and Renee were worried about her.

But I still couldn't understand why they had chosen to exclude me rather than explain what was happening.

Perhaps they thought I would ask too many questions.

Perhaps they were ashamed.

Perhaps they simply didn't want to deal with my feelings while trying to manage their own problems.

I couldn't know.

All I knew was that I had been left out.

I walked to the kitchen calendar.

The invitation was still written there in my handwriting.

December 25.

Noon.

Adam's house.

I picked up a pen and crossed it out.

Underneath, I wrote a new plan.

Westdale. Ten in the morning.

Then I put the pen down and went to bed.

I slept poorly.

At seven fifteen the following morning, someone began pounding on my front door.

“Mom! Open the door!”

I pulled on my robe and hurried down the hallway.

When I opened it, Adam stood on the porch with his phone in his hand.

His face was red.

He didn't even say good morning.

He held the screen toward me.

Westdale had posted its announcement.

The center had thanked me for donating thirty-one thousand dollars in memory of my late husband.

Adam had found out.

And he was furious.

“Mom, tell me this isn't true.”

I looked at the screen.

Then I looked at my son.

“It is true.”

He lowered the phone.

“You gave away every dollar?”

“Yes, Adam.”

He stared at me as though I had done something he could scarcely believe.

“We thought that money would help us buy a house!”

I stood quietly in the doorway.

He had never asked me for it.

I had never promised it to him.

And yet, standing there in the cold morning air, I could see that he believed I had taken something away from his family.

I also knew that I hadn't yet heard the whole story.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Son Accused Me of Throwing Away His Family’s Future, but the Truth About His Wife’s Mother Changed Everything I Thought I Knew

“How much help can you give a family that's about to lose its home?” Clare looked at me across her desk.
