Dad said you're busy.

I read it twice.

I didn't want to tell a ten-year-old that her parents had excluded me from Christmas.

I didn't want her to feel she had to choose sides.

So I told her the truth as gently as I could.

I was going to help serve Christmas dinner at the community center where Grandpa Walter used to volunteer.

She replied almost immediately.

But who will hand out the presents?

I pressed the phone against my chest.

That was the tradition I had forgotten to explain.

Every Christmas, Walter had announced the gifts as though the children were receiving awards at a championship ceremony.

He had made the simplest present feel important.

I wondered whether Lily was asking because she missed him.

Or because she knew I did.

I typed back that we would talk soon.

Then I set the phone down and looked toward the hall closet.

Walter's Santa hat was still there.

I opened the door, took it from the shelf, and held it in my hands.

The red fabric had faded.

One of the seams was beginning to loosen.

I remembered the last Christmas Walter had worn it.

He had insisted on standing even though he was tired, determined to hand every present to the children himself.

I had told him he could sit down.

He had refused.

“Traditions don't hand themselves out, Jo.”

At the time, I had laughed.

Now the memory made my throat tighten.

I put the hat back in the closet.

I wasn't ready to wear it.

Not yet.

On Christmas morning, I woke early and dressed in jeans and Walter's red flannel shirt.

At ten o'clock, I arrived at Westdale.

The dining hall was already busy.

Paper snowflakes hung from the walls, and small Christmas trees stood near the windows.

Volunteers were preparing turkey, stuffing, gravy, and huge pots of mashed potatoes.

Clare handed me a red apron.

“You're on potatoes today.”

I tied the apron around my waist.

“Good. I'd like to talk to you when you're finished, if that's all right.”

She hesitated.

Then she nodded.

I watched her walk toward the dining area.

I had expected many things that Christmas.

I had expected to feel lonely.

I had expected to miss Walter.

I had expected to wonder whether Adam and Renee were enjoying themselves without me.

I hadn't expected to see Patricia standing in front of me, looking as though she wished she could disappear.

Something was wrong.

And whatever it was, I suspected it had been wrong for much longer than any of us realized.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Renee’s Mother Sat Across From Me With a Christmas Meal She Couldn’t Afford, and Then She Told Me Who Had Saved Her Home

“Why would you do that without talking to us first?” Adam's voice carried across the porch.
