Ten in the morning.

I stood there looking at it.

Then I took the pen from the drawer and wrote a small note beside the date.

Next year, ask first. And we still have work to do.”

I thanked her and hung up.

Then I sat quietly for a while.

I wondered whether Patricia had told Renee the full story.

I wondered whether Adam had slept well.

I wondered whether the children were still talking about the old hockey photograph.

I was tempted to call them.

Instead, I waited.

I had learned something over the past few days.

Sometimes the best thing a person could do was give others room to think.

I spent the morning tidying the kitchen and putting away the Christmas decorations I had taken out before the invitation was canceled.

The red Santa hat remained in the hall closet.

I left it there.

I wasn't ready to bring it out again.

But I no longer felt that looking at it would hurt quite as much.

On Monday afternoon, I received another message from Lily.

Grandma, can I come over sometime? I want to see Grandpa's hockey picture again.

I smiled.

I told her she could come whenever her parents arranged it.

Then I put the phone down and looked at the calendar.

Christmas was over.

But perhaps the work of being a family had only just begun.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: A Week After Christmas, I Learned That Helping One Person Could Change a Family, but Only Honest Words Could Keep It Together

Adam kept the shoebox beside him for the rest of the evening.
