I wanted to thank you for something.”

I put down the serving spoon.

“What is it?”

She adjusted the child on her hip.

“Last year, Westdale helped my son and me stay in our apartment.”

I looked at her.

She continued before I could answer.

“We were behind on rent. I had been trying to manage everything by myself, but I couldn't catch up.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The housing program helped us pay what we owed. I don't know what would have happened if they hadn't.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“I'm glad they were able to help you.”

She nodded.

“I've wanted to thank you ever since I found out about the donation.”

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

I thought about the check I had written in Clare's office.

I remembered how uncertain I had felt before handing it over.

I had known the money could help people.

But knowing it in theory was different from standing in front of someone whose life had been affected by it.

Kayla looked down at her son.

“He was little when all this happened. He doesn't remember any of it.”

The boy waved his roll at me.

I smiled.

“Well, I'm glad he's here today.”

She laughed softly.

“Me, too.”

I wanted to ask her more about what had happened.

But I could see that she had already shared something difficult.

She didn't owe me the details of her life.

So I simply wished her a Merry Christmas and made sure she had enough food for herself and her son.

When she walked away, I stood behind the counter for a moment.

I could hear the noise of the dining hall.

Children laughing.

Plates clinking.

Volunteers calling to one another.

It all sounded ordinary.

But I knew that behind some of those ordinary faces were stories I would never hear.

People who had been frightened.

People who had nearly lost their homes.

People who had kept going because somebody offered help at the right moment.

My donation had become part of those stories.

I hadn't known Kayla.

I hadn't known Patricia's application would be approved.

I hadn't known which families would receive assistance.

I had simply trusted Westdale to use the money responsibly.

Now I understood a little more clearly what that decision had meant.

Lily came to stand beside me.

“Grandma, are you crying?”

I wiped my cheek.

“Just a little.”

“Why?”

I looked toward the table where Kayla was helping her son eat.

“Someone just told me that the money I gave Westdale helped her family.”

Lily considered that.

“The money Grandpa collected?”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the dining hall.

Then she smiled.

“Grandpa would like that.”

I laughed softly.

“I think he would, too.”

Lily returned to her work.

I watched her hand a napkin to an older woman.

She did it without hesitation.

I wondered whether she understood how much that small gesture mattered.

Perhaps not yet.

But she would learn.

After the meal, Clare asked me to come to her office.

I followed her down the hallway.

The photograph of Walter was still on the wall.

He was laughing while carrying the folding table, looking as though somebody had just told him a joke he couldn't wait to repeat.

Beside it hung the old youth hockey team photograph.

Adam had brought it in after Christmas.

Walter stood behind the children in the back row.

Adam was near the front, holding his little trophy.

I stepped closer.

I hadn't realized Clare had placed the photographs together.

She stood beside me.

“Your son thought his father would want this here.”

I nodded.

“He probably would.”

Clare smiled.

“Adam has been doing good work around the center.”

“He told me he fixed the cabinet.”

“He did. Gus was impressed.”

I laughed.

“That's a surprise.”

Clare laughed, too.

Then she became quiet.

“I wanted you to know that your donation has helped more than the families we were able to assist immediately. It also gave us room to respond when new needs came up.”

I listened.

She explained that housing problems rarely arrived at convenient times.

A family might need help before the next paycheck.

An older resident might face an unexpected bill.

A parent might need assistance with a deposit to move somewhere safer.

Having money available meant the center could respond instead of making every person wait while another round of fundraising took place.

I thought about the four thousand two hundred dollars that had helped Patricia.

I thought about Kayla and her little boy.

I thought about the families I would never meet.

“Thank you for taking care of it,” I said.

Clare shook her head.

“You made the choice to give. We're simply trying to make it count.”

I looked again at Walter's photograph.

For years, I had thought his collection was one of the largest parts of his life.

He had spent so much time building it.

He had learned the value of every item.

He had kept everything organized.

Selling it had been difficult.

But I no longer regretted the decision.

The collection had become something else.

It had become rent paid on time.

It had become a little more security for a mother and child.

It had become an opportunity for families to begin the new year without the immediate fear of losing their homes.

Walter had never intended his collection to become any of those things.

But I knew he would have understood.

When I left Clare's office, Adam was waiting near the storage room.

He held the door open for me.

“Everything all right?”

I smiled.

“Everything is fine.”

He looked toward the photographs.

“Dad would have liked seeing his picture here.”

“Yes.”

Adam was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, “I'm glad you donated the money.”

I looked at him.

He met my eyes.

“I was wrong to be angry.
