My mother had called twice before I reached the highway.

The second time, I answered through the car’s hands-free system.

“Claire, you need to get here on time.”

“I know, Mom. I’m on my way.”

“Vanessa doesn’t like waiting around for dinner.”

I tightened my hands around the steering wheel.

My younger sister, Vanessa, had always been the person everyone was expected to accommodate.

If she was tired, plans changed.

If she was upset, somebody had to find out why.

If I was upset, I was usually told not to make a big deal out of it.

I had learned to live with that arrangement.

Or I had convinced myself I had.

“I’m driving carefully,” I told my mother.

“Well, just don’t be late.”

Then she hung up.

I remember looking at the empty passenger seat.

I’d brought a small gift for my mother, a bottle of the perfume she had once admired in a department store. I had wrapped it myself the night before.

I wasn’t expecting a thank-you.

I just wanted to arrive with something thoughtful.

That was how I had always approached my family.

Give a little more.

Ask for a little less.

Maybe things would eventually feel different.

They didn’t.

I was thirty years old, and I still measured the success of a family visit by how few reasons I gave anyone to criticize me.

Vanessa had never needed to think that way.

She was married to Derek Walsh, a successful real estate developer who seemed to know everybody worth knowing. Their house was large, their vacations were expensive, and their photographs always showed them smiling.

My parents loved talking about them.

When someone asked what I did, my father usually called me an accountant.

It was easier than explaining my actual job.

I worked as a forensic financial investigator for a major compliance firm.

For six years, I had examined financial records, traced questionable payments, and helped identify transactions that didn’t make sense.

It was demanding work.

Sometimes it was exhausting.

I was good at it.

My parents had never shown much interest.

To them, I was the daughter who sat behind a computer all day and worried about numbers.

Vanessa had married a wealthy man.

I had chosen a career they couldn’t easily explain at dinner parties.

That seemed to settle the matter.

I kept driving.

The snow had begun falling more heavily, and the traffic slowed as I approached a stretch of Interstate 87.

I remember easing off the accelerator.

I remember the road shining beneath the headlights.

Then my tires lost their grip.

The car moved sideways.

I turned the steering wheel, trying to correct it, but the vehicle wouldn’t respond the way I expected.

There was a sudden impact.

Then another.

The sound was so loud that I couldn’t separate it from the noise inside my own head.

I tried to understand what had happened.

I tried to move.

Nothing made sense.

For a few seconds, I thought I was still driving.

Then I realized I wasn’t alone.

Someone was calling my name.

“Claire? Can you hear me?”

I opened my eyes.

A paramedic was leaning over me inside an ambulance.

I couldn’t remember how I had gotten there.

My chest hurt, and every attempt to move made the pain worse.

“Where am I?” I managed to ask.

“You’re in an ambulance. You’ve been in a serious collision.”

I swallowed.

“Am I going to be okay?”

“We’re getting you to the hospital. The doctors will take care of you.”

He spoke calmly, but I could see the concern in his face.

That frightened me more than his words.

I wanted to call my parents.

The thought came automatically.

Even after the phone call that morning, even after years of feeling like an afterthought, I wanted my mother.

I wanted someone familiar to tell me I wasn’t alone.

By the time we reached St. Matthew’s Hospital, the pain had become difficult to ignore.

Medical staff moved quickly around me.

Someone asked questions about my injuries.

Someone else checked my vital signs.

A doctor explained that I needed urgent treatment and that they were preparing me for a procedure.

I nodded even though I wasn’t sure I had understood everything.

A nurse came closer.

“Claire, is there someone you’d like us to contact?”

“My parents.”

My voice sounded smaller than I expected.

“Robert and Diane Mercer.”

She asked for their phone number, then stepped aside to make the call.

I watched her face as she spoke.

At first, she sounded professional and reassuring.

Then she paused.

“Mrs. Mercer, I’m calling from St. Matthew’s Hospital. Your daughter has been brought in following a serious car accident.”

I tried to hear my mother’s response.

The nurse listened for several seconds.

“She’s receiving medical attention, but the doctors need to perform an urgent procedure.”

Another pause.

Then my mother spoke loudly enough for me to hear her through the phone.

“We’re in the middle of hosting Thanksgiving dinner. There are twenty people here.”

I stared at the nurse.

Perhaps I had misunderstood.

Perhaps my mother was explaining that she needed a few minutes to arrange things before leaving.

The nurse glanced toward me.

“Ma’am, Claire’s condition is serious. It would be best if a family member could come to the hospital.”

My father joined the conversation.

His voice was familiar.

I had heard it at birthday dinners, family gatherings, and every holiday when he wanted everyone to behave.

“Just contact us again if her condition gets worse.”

The nurse didn’t answer immediately.

Neither did I.

Then the call ended.

She lowered the phone.

I looked at the ceiling.

I wanted to ask her to call them again.

I wanted to explain that my parents weren’t normally like this, even though I knew that wasn’t entirely true.

Instead, I lay still and tried to breathe.

The nurse came back to my bedside.

“Claire, we’re going to take you in now.”

I nodded.

I couldn’t find anything to say.

The people around me were preparing to treat injuries I couldn’t even understand, and the two people I had trusted to come when I needed them most had decided that dinner couldn’t wait.

I had spent years telling myself that my parents loved me differently from Vanessa.

Not less.

Just differently.

It was a useful explanation.

It let me keep showing up.

It let me keep buying gifts, answering calls, and pretending that small disappointments didn’t accumulate.

But lying in that hospital bed, I couldn’t make the explanation work anymore.

I was frightened.

I was hurt.

And I was alone.

As the medical team prepared me for the procedure, I thought about the perfume wrapped in my car.

I thought about the dinner table waiting for me at my parents’ house.

I wondered whether anyone had noticed I was missing.

Then the staff moved me toward the treatment area, and I stopped thinking about Thanksgiving.

I had something more immediate to survive.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: I Woke Up to an Empty Room, but the Small Package Someone Left Behind Would Soon Make My Family’s Silence Impossible to Ignore

I used to believe that if something terrible happened to me, my parents would come.
