This isn't about getting you into trouble.”

I still wasn't satisfied.

I needed to know who had contacted them and why.

Officer Daniels explained that someone wanted to meet Julian and thank him personally.

I looked from one officer to the other.

“Why would that require a police visit?”

The two exchanged a brief glance.

Then Officer Daniels answered.

“Because the person arranging it wanted to make sure we could bring you both there safely and explain what was happening.”

It wasn't much of an explanation.

But the officers remained calm, and neither of them suggested that Julian was in danger or under suspicion.

I asked a few more questions.

They answered what they could, although they clearly weren't going to reveal everything on the doorstep.

Finally, Officer Daniels asked whether we would accompany them.

I hesitated.

I was Julian's mother.

I wasn't going to let my son climb into a patrol car simply because someone had arranged a surprise.

I asked where we were going and who would be meeting us.

When the officers explained that the destination was Maya's home on Oak Street, I felt some of the tension leave my shoulders.

At least we knew the visit was connected to someone we knew.

I looked at Julian.

He was still worried.

“I swear, Mom, I haven't done anything else.”

I put my hand on his shoulder.

“I believe you.”

And I did.

Whatever mistakes he had made by selling his belongings without permission, I knew why he had done it.

I knew about the guitar.

I knew about his savings.

I knew about the wheelchair.

There was no secret crime hiding in those facts, as far as I could see.

Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that something important had been left out.

After confirming the arrangements, we agreed to go with the officers.

Julian and I sat in the back of the patrol car.

He kept his hands folded in his lap.

I reached over and held one of them.

He squeezed my fingers.

Neither of us spoke much during the drive.

The morning was quiet.

I watched the familiar streets pass outside the window and tried to work out what could have happened the previous day.

Had something gone wrong with the wheelchair?

Had Maya's parents discovered a problem?

Had the equipment supplier contacted the police because of the unusual purchase?

I knew those thoughts were probably unfair.

But fear has a way of finding explanations before the facts arrive.

I looked at Julian.

He was staring straight ahead.

I wished I could tell him exactly what was happening.

I couldn't.

About ten minutes later, the patrol car turned onto Oak Street.

Maya's house came into view.

Another police vehicle was parked in the driveway.

Several people stood near the front porch.

I recognized Jillian first.

She was talking to someone near the entrance.

Then I saw a tall man wearing a formal police uniform.

He was holding his cap in both hands.

I recognized him as Maya's father, Nathan Lin.

I knew Nathan worked in law enforcement, but I had never seen him dressed for a formal occasion.

He turned as our patrol car stopped.

The officers opened the doors, and Julian climbed out beside me.

Nathan walked toward us.

He looked serious enough that my concern returned.

“Julian Vance?”

My son straightened.

“Yes, sir.”

Nathan held out his hand.

“I've been wanting to meet you properly.”

Julian shook it, uncertain what to say.

“Is Maya okay?”

That was the first thing he asked.

Not why the police were there.

Not whether he had done something wrong.

He wanted to know about his friend.

Nathan's expression changed.

A small smile appeared.

“Maya is doing very well.”

He glanced toward the house.

“In fact, something good happened yesterday.”

Julian looked at me.

I looked back at him, just as confused.

Nathan explained that he had returned home after a long shift and found Maya moving around the kitchen in her new wheelchair.

He hadn't known how it had arrived.

At first, he had simply been surprised to see his daughter using different equipment.

Then Jillian had told him what Julian had done.

Nathan described the guitar.

He described the savings Julian had spent.

He even mentioned the PlayStation.

My son lowered his head as the details were repeated.

I felt a strange mixture of pride and embarrassment.

Pride because Julian's actions had clearly meant something to Maya's family.

Embarrassment because he was receiving attention for a decision he had made without asking us.

Nathan didn't seem interested in criticizing him.

Instead, he explained how difficult it had been for the family to manage the costs associated with Maya's needs.

They had known the old chair needed attention.

They had been trying to work through the expense alongside their other responsibilities.

Maya, he said, had done her best not to add to their worries.

“She didn't always tell us how difficult things had become,” he explained.

He looked toward his daughter.

“Seeing her move around so comfortably yesterday made me realize how much she had been putting up with.”

Then he turned back to Julian.

“And when I learned what you had done, I wanted to meet you.”

Julian shifted his weight.

“I hope I didn't cause any problems for your family.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You haven't.”

My son looked relieved, but he still seemed uncomfortable with the attention.

“I just wanted to help Maya.”

“I understand.”

Nathan paused.

“That's exactly why we're here.”

He gestured toward the front door.

“Come inside. There's something we'd like to show you.”

I followed Julian into the house.

I could hear voices coming from the living room.

Several people were waiting inside.

Some wore ordinary clothes.

Others were clearly off-duty police officers.

Maya was there with her mother.

She was seated in her new wheelchair, smiling when she saw Julian.

He smiled back, although he still looked unsure about what was happening.

Then his eyes moved toward the fireplace.

A long black instrument case sat beside it.

He stopped walking.

I saw the change in his face before he said anything.

He knew that shape.

He knew what an instrument case meant.

And suddenly, I understood why the officers had brought us there.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Black Guitar Case Beside the Fireplace Explained Why the Officers Had Come, but My Son’s First Words Changed the Meaning of Their Gift

The knocking came at 6:45 in the morning.
