"Yes."<\/p>\n
"Then he should speak with you."<\/p>\n
"Understood."<\/p>\n
We ended the call.<\/p>\n
I returned to the schedule.<\/p>\n
The assessment was not about Richard.<\/p>\n
It was about the organizations responsible for readiness.<\/p>\n

"Would you be disappointed if I ended the engagement?"<\/p>\n
I felt the question before I understood it.<\/p>\n
She was not asking whether I liked Ethan.<\/p>\n
She was asking whether I would support her if she walked away from the life she had imagined.<\/p>\n
"No," I said.<\/p>\n
She looked relieved.<\/p>\n
"Would you be disappointed if I stayed?"<\/p>\n
I took her hand.<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
She stared at me.<\/p>\n
"Really?"<\/p>\n
"Really."<\/p>\n
I squeezed her fingers.<\/p>\n
"This is your life, Olivia."<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
I continued.<\/p>\n
"But I want you to remember something."<\/p>\n
"What?"<\/p>\n
"You don't have to earn the right to be treated well."<\/p>\n
Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n
She looked away.<\/p>\n
I did not try to stop the tears.<\/p>\n
Sometimes a person needed to cry before they could make a decision.<\/p>\n
After a while, she wiped her face.<\/p>\n
"I think I need to talk to Ethan again."<\/p>\n
"Then talk to him."<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
We sat together until she felt ready to leave.<\/p>\n
The next morning, I received an update from Sullivan.<\/p>\n
The panel had confirmed that several procurement approvals lacked the required documentation.<\/p>\n
The inventory discrepancies were still being examined.<\/p>\n
The retaliation complaints had been referred for further review.<\/p>\n
The findings were preliminary.<\/p>\n
No final decision had been made.<\/p>\n
I read the report.<\/p>\n
Then I put it away.<\/p>\n
I did not feel satisfaction.<\/p>\n
I felt the weight of what it meant.<\/p>\n
A commander was responsible for the people under him.<\/p>\n

"General, Captain Whitmore has asked whether he can speak with you privately."<\/p>\n
"What did you tell him?"<\/p>\n
"That all matters related to the assessment must go through the panel."<\/p>\n
"Good."<\/p>\n
He paused.<\/p>\n
"Would you like me to tell him that you are unavailable?"<\/p>\n
"No."<\/p>\n
I looked at the papers on my desk.<\/p>\n
"Tell him that I will not discuss the investigation with him."<\/p>\n
"Understood."<\/p>\n
We ended the call.<\/p>\n
I sat back.<\/p>\n
For the first time, I understood why Richard had been so confident at dinner.<\/p>\n
He believed authority was personal.<\/p>\n
He believed respect belonged to the person with the highest rank in the room.<\/p>\n
He believed that if he could make someone feel small, he had won.<\/p>\n
But the investigation did not belong to him.<\/p>\n
It did not belong to me.<\/p>\n
It belonged to the process.<\/p>\n
