We’re taking her to get checked.”

“Is she all right?”

“She should be fine. Don’t worry about it.”

I glanced at the clock.

Dinner was almost ready.

“Should I keep everything warm?”

“Don’t wait for us. We’ll call you later.”

I believed him.

That was the part I would remember afterward.

I believed him without asking another question.

I told him to take care of his mother.

Then I returned to the kitchen.

The turkey needed another twenty minutes.

I covered the side dishes and lowered the oven temperature.

I thought about Patricia sitting in a waiting room somewhere.

I thought about Daniel being worried.

I thought about how disappointed everyone would be if Thanksgiving dinner got cold.

So I kept working.

At seven fifteen, my phone vibrated.

It was a notification from Facebook.

Vanessa had posted a photograph.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw Daniel’s face.

He was sitting at a restaurant table with his parents, smiling beside a tower of seafood.

A champagne glass was raised in front of him.

Patricia was sitting across from him.

She looked perfectly healthy.

Vanessa stood behind them, wearing the pearl earrings I had given her the previous Christmas.

The restaurant was Bellamy’s.

I knew it well.

It was the most expensive steakhouse in town.

For a few seconds, I stared at the photograph.

Then I looked toward the dining room.

My table was still waiting.

The turkey was cooling.

Nine chairs.

Nine plates.

One empty seat where I had planned to sit beside Daniel.

I opened Vanessa’s profile.

There were more photographs.

Daniel laughing with his father.

Patricia holding a glass of champagne.

Vanessa posing beside an enormous seafood platter.

Two couples from Daniel’s golf club were there, too.

I recognized them immediately.

They had promised to come to our house.

I had baked their favorite pecan pie that afternoon.

In one photograph, Daniel had his arm around his mother.

In another, he was smiling at Vanessa.

They looked happy.

They looked comfortable.

They looked as though they had never intended to come home.

I sat down at the kitchen counter.

My phone was still in my hand.

I could have called Daniel.

I could have demanded an explanation.

Instead, I opened the comments.

Patricia had written something beneath one of the photographs.

It was a simple sentence.

A sentence that made my stomach tighten.

I read it twice.

Then I read it again.

The words were not meant for me.

At least, I didn’t think they were.

But I knew exactly what she meant.

For eleven years, Patricia had made it clear that I was never quite the kind of woman she wanted for her son.

I was too independent when I disagreed with her.

Too quiet when I refused to argue.

Too ambitious when I worked late.

And too ordinary whenever she wanted to remind me that Daniel came from a respectable family.

She had a name for me.

Her little cook.

I used to laugh when she said it.

I told myself she was only teasing.

I told myself that family members sometimes said things they didn’t mean.

I told myself a lot of things.

That evening, I stopped.

I went back to the photograph.

Daniel was holding his champagne glass.

His mother was smiling.

His sister was standing beside him.

Everyone was there.

Everyone except me.

I looked at the food on my table.

I had spent twelve hours preparing it.

Nobody had even called to say they were sorry.

I felt something inside me settle.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something colder.

I put my phone down and went to the refrigerator.

The turkey was still warm.

I cut a slice, placed it on a plate, and sat at the kitchen counter.

I ate alone.

For the first time that day, I didn’t worry about whether anyone else would enjoy the meal.

I didn’t rush.

I didn’t get up to check the gravy.

I didn’t look at the clock.

I simply ate.

Then I opened my banking app.

I had not planned to do anything that night.

But I knew exactly where to look.

Daniel had a company card.

So did Vanessa.

So did Patricia.

They all worked for Cedar & Salt Catering, the business I had built before I met my husband.

The cards were meant for approved company expenses.

They were not meant for champagne, seafood, or expensive family dinners.

I found the account.

Three authorized cardholders.

Three active cards.

I locked them one by one.

Then I set my phone down.

I folded my grandmother’s apron and placed it on the counter.

The oven was still warm.

The dining room was still waiting.

But I was finished waiting.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Call That Came Before Dessert and the Question My Husband Could Not Answer

I used to believe that if you gave people enough love, they would eventually learn how to love you back.
