It's Thanksgiving."

He said nothing.

I imagined the waiter standing beside their table.

I imagined the other guests watching.

For years, I had made sure Daniel's family never had to feel embarrassed about money.

I had paid bills without mentioning them.

I had covered expenses when Patricia was short.

I had let Vanessa use company resources whenever she needed something.

I had done it because I believed that was what family did.

Now they were sitting in a restaurant I could never have afforded when I started my business, using cards connected to the company I had built.

And they were angry because I had stopped them.

"Use a personal card," I said.

Daniel's voice changed.

"We don't have enough available credit."

I sat very still.

That was interesting.

Not because I didn't know Daniel enjoyed spending money.

I knew that.

But I had never realized how completely he depended on the company.

He had been living as though the money belonged to him.

Maybe he had convinced himself that it did.

"I'll let you figure it out," I said.

Then I ended the call.

He called again.

I didn't answer.

He called a third time.

I watched the phone vibrate against the counter.

Then a message appeared.

You are making a scene.

Another one followed.

You have no idea how much damage you're doing.

Vanessa sent a message a few minutes later.

You are unbelievable. You ruined Thanksgiving for everyone.

I read it without responding.

Then Patricia left a voicemail.

Her voice was sharp and controlled.

She said I had embarrassed the family.

She said I had no right to interfere with company business.

She said I should be grateful that Daniel had brought me into a respectable family.

I saved the message.

I saved Vanessa's texts.

I saved every missed call.

I wasn't thinking about revenge.

I was thinking about what I might tell myself tomorrow.

I knew how easy it would be to wake up and decide that I had overreacted.

I had done that before.

I had spent years making excuses for people who never made excuses for me.

So I took a photograph of the dining room.

The untouched plates.

The cooling turkey.

The flowers.

The empty chair beside mine.

I didn't want to forget what the room looked like that night.

I didn't want to remember it as something smaller than it was.

Then I opened the folder I had been avoiding for six weeks.

It was password-protected.

The investigator's preliminary report was inside.

I had hired him after our accountant noticed irregularities in Cedar & Salt's records.

At first, I thought it was a bookkeeping mistake.

A duplicate payment.

An invoice entered under the wrong account.

Something that could be corrected with a phone call.

I wanted that to be true.

I wanted to believe that the people I had trusted with my business had made an honest mistake.

The report was not long.

It didn't need to be.

There were invoices.

Bank transfers.

Company records.

And a name I recognized.

Northstar Hospitality Consulting.

Vanessa's company.

The first invoice was for menu development.

The next was for regional research.

Then leadership training.

The amounts were large enough to make me uncomfortable.

The descriptions were vague enough to make me suspicious.

I opened the next page.

Then the next.

The transfers had continued for fourteen months.

Daniel had approved them.

The total was $186,400.

I stared at the number.

It was more than I had spent on my first commercial kitchen.

More than I had paid for the delivery vans.

More than I had ever taken out of the business for myself in a single year.

I scrolled down.

The money had moved through several accounts.

Some of it had paid for Patricia's condo renovations.

Some had funded expensive trips.

Some had gone toward a deposit on restaurant premises.

A restaurant Daniel planned to open without me.

I read that sentence again.

Then I closed the report.

I couldn't keep reading.

Not yet.

I had spent six weeks looking for a reason to believe the transfers were legitimate.

I had asked myself whether Vanessa had actually provided services.

Whether Daniel had approved something without checking.

Whether Patricia had received money without knowing where it came from.

I had tried to make the numbers harmless.

But the report was not a collection of rumors.

It was a trail.

And I knew where the trail began.

Cedar & Salt was mine.

I had founded it before I met Daniel.

I had signed the first catering contract in a rented kitchen with one employee and a borrowed refrigerator.

I remembered the day clearly.

My mother had taken a photograph of me holding the contract.

I had framed it and placed it on the mantel.

Daniel wasn't in that photograph.

He had not been part of the business when it began.

He had joined me later.

I trusted him enough to make him operations director.

I trusted Vanessa enough to give her purchasing authority.

I trusted Patricia enough to let her supervise events.

I had never imagined that I would need to protect my company from them.

But I was beginning to understand that trust had not protected me.

It had made me careless.

I opened a new email.

Elaine Morris was my attorney.

I had spoken to her several times since the investigation began.

She had told me not to confront anyone until the evidence was preserved.

She had told me to keep the original records secure.

She had told me that I didn't need to make a decision before I understood what had happened.

I had listened.

For six weeks, I had waited.

Now I was ready.

I typed a short message.

Please prepare the access revocations and preservation notices for Friday morning. I want to proceed.

I read it once.

Then I sent it.

My phone lit up again.

Daniel.

I let it ring.

A message appeared.

You need to remember who gave you a respectable name.

I looked toward the mantel.

The photograph of my first catering contract was still there.

I was twenty-six years old.

I was standing in a rented kitchen.

My mother was beside me.

I looked tired.

I looked proud.

I looked like someone who had built something from nothing.

Daniel had not given me that.

Neither had Patricia.

I had built it myself.

And I was no longer going to let them pretend otherwise.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Family Who Called Me a Guest and the Business They Thought They Owned

Nine minutes later, Daniel called.
