Salt had paid for something that belonged to Daniel.

The accountant reviewed the records.

He traced the deposit.

He identified the account that had funded it.

He compared the transfer with the Northstar invoices.

The connection was clear.

The restaurant had been financed, at least in part, with money that had come from my company.

I sat in Elaine's office while she explained the next steps.

"We'll include the transfer in the recovery action," she said.

"What happens to the lease?"

"That depends on the terms and what Daniel does."

I nodded.

I had no interest in running his restaurant.

I had no interest in taking it from him.

I wanted Cedar & Salt to recover what it had lost.

That was all.

When I returned to the office, I found a message from Daniel.

He wanted to meet.

He said he wanted to explain everything.

I forwarded it to Elaine.

She advised me not to meet alone.

I agreed.

We arranged a meeting at her office.

Daniel arrived late.

He looked tired.

His suit was wrinkled.

He sat across from me and folded his hands.

"Clara, I know this has gone too far."

I looked at him.

"What do you want to explain?"

He glanced at Elaine.

Then back at me.

"The money was supposed to be temporary."

I waited.

"I was going to repay it."

"When?"

He rubbed his forehead.

"When the restaurant opened."

I looked at him.

"With the restaurant's profits?"

He nodded.

I felt something tighten in my chest.

He had used company money to fund a restaurant.

Then he had planned to use the restaurant's profits to repay the company.

He had not asked me.

He had not told me.

He had not considered what would happen if the restaurant failed.

He had simply assumed the money would be available.

"Did you think I would never find out?" I asked.

He looked down.

"I thought I could fix it."

I believed him.

That was the worst part.

I believed he had convinced himself that he could fix it.

He had not thought of himself as someone stealing from his wife.

He had thought of himself as someone borrowing from a business he believed he controlled.

But the company had not given him permission.

And I had not given him permission.

I looked at him.

"You could have asked me."

He shook his head.

"You would have said no."

"Maybe."

He looked up.

I continued.

"But you never gave me the chance to decide."

He said nothing.

The meeting ended without an agreement.

Elaine told him to direct further communication through her.

I left the office and sat in my car.

I didn't cry.

I didn't feel angry.

I felt tired.

I had spent years trying to make Daniel feel secure.

I had given him authority.

I had trusted him with the business.

I had believed that marriage meant we were building something together.

But he had treated my trust as a resource.

Something he could use.

Something he could spend.

I drove back to Cedar & Salt.

The kitchen was busy.

A wedding order had to be prepared.

The staff were working through the checklist.

I stood beside Ruth and reviewed the delivery schedule.

She asked whether the new operations director would be starting soon.

I told her we were still interviewing.

She nodded.

"Good. We need someone who knows what they're doing."

I smiled.

"Yes. We do."

That afternoon, I reviewed the candidates.

I wanted someone experienced.

Someone who understood the difference between authority and ownership.

Someone who would question an unusual payment.

Someone who would protect the business even when the request came from a person they liked.

I had learned that a good operations director did more than keep the kitchen running.

They protected the people who depended on it.

I hired the new director a few weeks later.

His name was Michael.

He had managed a catering company for twelve years.

He asked careful questions.

He wanted to understand our approval process.

He wanted to know how we handled vendor contracts.

He wanted to know who reviewed large payments.

I answered every question.

Then I showed him the new controls.

No single person would be able to approve a large payment and release it without a second review.

The company cards would have clear limits.

Every expense would need a business purpose.

Family members would follow the same rules as everyone else.

Michael listened.

Then he said, "That sounds reasonable."

I looked at him.

For the first time in months, I felt relieved.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because the company was finally being protected.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The People Who Stayed When the Family Left and the Small Changes That Made My Business Feel Like Mine Again

The restaurant lease became the next problem.
