The numbers were not.

“Your accountant has matched the transfers,” he said. “We’ve also confirmed that the invoices were created for services that were never provided.”

I looked at the first page.

Northstar Hospitality Consulting.

Vanessa’s company.

The name appeared again and again, each time beside an amount that had once seemed too small to question.

Now the totals sat together.

I pressed my thumb against the edge of the folder.

“How much?” I asked.

He gave me the number I already knew.

“One hundred eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars.”

The room seemed to narrow around it.

I had built Cedar & Salt one delivery at a time. No confession. Just dates, amounts, and names.

I recognized the dates.

One transfer had cleared the same week Daniel told me we needed to cut back on household spending.

Another had gone through while I was working a wedding that lasted fourteen hours.

I remembered coming home with my feet aching and finding him asleep on the couch.

I had thought he was tired.

I had not wondered what he had been doing.

The investigator closed the folder halfway.

“We’re not asking you to decide what happens next today,” he said. “We need to preserve the records and keep the access restricted.”

“I already revoked their access.”

“Good. Don’t restore it.”

I nodded.

He explained what the company needed to retain: invoices, emails, payment records, vendor files, and the original access logs.

I wrote each item down.

My handwriting was neat.

That surprised me.

For weeks, I had felt as if every part of my life had been written in a hand I no longer recognized.

Now I had a list.

A list was something I could work with.

After he left, I stayed at the table.

The folder remained open in front of me.

I did not cry.

I did not call Daniel.

I read the entries again, slowly, until the dates stopped looking like numbers and began to look like the days I had lived through.

Then I called Elaine Morris.

She answered on the second ring.

“I have the confirmation,” I said.

“I’m listening.”

“They found the invoices. They matched the transfers. The total is exactly what we thought.”

There was a brief pause.

“Then we proceed carefully,” she said. “No private confrontation.
