Daniel received a call while we were still in the conference room.<\/p>\n
He listened without speaking.<\/p>\n
Then he asked the caller to repeat the information.<\/p>\n
When he hung up, his expression had changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe emergency call came in before Christopher reached Mrs. Halston.\u201d<\/p>\n
I frowned.<\/p>\n
\u201cI called the ambulance.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou did,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cBut someone called ninety seconds earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n
The caller had reported an elderly woman in distress near mile marker twenty-two.<\/p>\n
Eleanor looked unsettled.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I hadn\u2019t collapsed yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
The call had been made at 7:51.<\/p>\n
She had pulled over because she felt dizzy.<\/p>\n
I had reached her at 7:54.<\/p>\n
Daniel said the caller had given the correct location, then disconnected.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow could anyone know where I was?\u201d Eleanor asked.<\/p>\n
Daniel did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n
Her doctors had found no evidence of poisoning or an obvious external cause.<\/p>\n
The episode appeared consistent with an underlying cardiac condition.<\/p>\n
That should have reassured us.<\/p>\n
Instead, the early call made the situation feel worse.<\/p>\n
Eleanor remembered telling her granddaughter, Claire, about her morning route.<\/p>\n
Claire\u2019s husband was Marcus Vale, a property developer with extensive business ties to Halston Capital.<\/p>\n
Daniel explained that an internal audit had raised concerns about several of Marcus\u2019s projects.<\/p>\n
Millions of dollars had moved through related companies.<\/p>\n
Some valuations appeared inflated.<\/p>\n
Some expenses could not be supported.<\/p>\n
Eleanor listened, her face growing pale.<\/p>\n
\u201cClaire wouldn\u2019t know about this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t know what Claire knows,\u201d Daniel replied.<\/p>\n
Eleanor looked away.<\/p>\n
I stepped into the hallway when my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n
Sophie had texted me.<\/p>\n
Dad, Mom says you lost your job. Are we okay?<\/p>\n
I called her.<\/p>\n
She answered immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHey, kiddo.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you fired?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTemporarily unemployed.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat means fired.\u201d<\/p>\n
I almost laughed.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour mother taught you to be precise.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAre we going to be okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked through the glass at the people still gathered around the conference table.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sophie paused.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n
I wanted to give her an answer that would erase her worry.<\/p>\n
Instead, I told her the truth.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n
She mentioned the family trip we had planned for the following month.<\/p>\n
Sarah had said we might need to postpone it.<\/p>\n
I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n
I had spent a year saving for that trip.<\/p>\n
Sophie wanted to visit the museums.<\/p>\n
Lucy wanted to see the Lincoln Memorial.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll talk to your mom,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd Sophie?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI love you too, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n
When I returned to the conference room, Eleanor was looking at a photograph on her phone.<\/p>\n
She had taken it at the hospital.<\/p>\n
It showed me beside her bed, holding a paper cup of water.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to remember the man who stopped,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t know what to say.<\/p>\n
Daniel\u2019s phone rang again.<\/p>\n
This time, he took the call outside.<\/p>\n
When he returned, he said the security team had found a vehicle that appeared to have followed Eleanor\u2019s car that morning.<\/p>\n
They had not yet identified the driver.<\/p>\n
Eleanor stared at the table.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomeone knew my route.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nobody contradicted her.<\/p>\n
