The specialist found that the transfer had used my account credentials.<\/p>\n
That did not prove I had performed it.<\/p>\n
But it explained why my name appeared in the logs.<\/p>\n
Gavin had been suspended, and Richard had left to contact the company\u2019s board.<\/p>\n
Eleanor stayed with us.<\/p>\n
She seemed determined not to let the investigation become something that happened around her without her knowledge.<\/p>\n
The specialist found evidence that the external drive had been connected to Gavin\u2019s computer.<\/p>\n
Daniel asked whether that established who had copied the files.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot by itself,\u201d the specialist said. \u201cBut it narrows the possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gavin had already left the office under supervision.<\/p>\n
He had not looked at me when he walked out.<\/p>\n
I thought about the years I had spent covering for him.<\/p>\n
I had repaired campaigns he had mishandled.<\/p>\n
I had stayed late when he promised clients work we could not deliver.<\/p>\n
I had accepted praise on behalf of the team and stayed quiet when he took credit for my ideas.<\/p>\n
Now, when I needed him to tell the truth, he had tried to make me look guilty.<\/p>\n
Eleanor approached my desk.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t have to remain here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYour daughters are waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that too.\u201d<\/p>\n
She nodded toward the cardboard box.<\/p>\n
\u201cTake your things. We can continue this later.\u201d<\/p>\n
I unplugged my laptop and placed it in the box.<\/p>\n
The painted mug rattled against the headphones.<\/p>\n
I moved it carefully so it would not break.<\/p>\n
Nina came over and hugged me.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou didn\u2019t fire me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI should have said something.\u201d<\/p>\n
I shook my head.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were scared.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked down.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo were you.\u201d<\/p>\n
I had no answer.<\/p>\n
When I reached the reception area, Eleanor was waiting beside the elevator.<\/p>\n
\u201cChristopher,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
I turned.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would still like you to come see me on Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout the job?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout the work you do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know anything about investments.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t ask you to manage investments.\u201d<\/p>\n
She handed me her card again.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome talk to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
I put it in my pocket.<\/p>\n
