I accepted that distinction without pretending I had done everything right.<\/p>\n
Gavin had been removed from his position.<\/p>\n
The board was reviewing his conduct and the financial records connected to Richard Field\u2019s concerns.<\/p>\n
I did not ask for details unless they affected my work.<\/p>\n
I had spent enough time being pulled into problems that were not mine.<\/p>\n
One afternoon, Daniel asked me to prepare a short explanation of the review process for employees.<\/p>\n
I wrote it in plain language.<\/p>\n
I explained what was being examined, who could answer questions, and how employees could report concerns.<\/p>\n
I avoided words that sounded important but meant little.<\/p>\n
Eleanor read the draft.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is clear,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was the goal.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople deserve to understand what is happening to their work.\u201d<\/p>\n
I thought about my old office.<\/p>\n
I thought about Gavin standing behind me while the specialist checked the transfer logs.<\/p>\n
I thought about how quickly a person could become the easiest explanation.<\/p>\n
I made one change to the draft.<\/p>\n
I added a sentence stating that employees would not be punished for raising a concern in good faith.<\/p>\n
Eleanor approved it.<\/p>\n
The review took weeks.<\/p>\n
Some of the financial records were incomplete.<\/p>\n
Some expenses had been approved without the required documentation.<\/p>\n
The company brought in outside auditors.<\/p>\n
Richard attended the board meetings.<\/p>\n
Gavin did not.<\/p>\n
I never saw him again.<\/p>\n
When I heard that he had resigned, I did not feel triumphant.<\/p>\n
I felt tired.<\/p>\n
There was no celebration in the office.<\/p>\n
People had work to do.<\/p>\n
The company needed to repair its processes, and employees needed to trust that the rules applied to everyone.<\/p>\n
I helped prepare the new internal communications.<\/p>\n
I also helped organize a staff meeting where employees could ask questions.<\/p>\n
One woman asked whether she could refuse a request from a senior manager if it seemed improper.<\/p>\n
Daniel answered first.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you should document the request.\u201d<\/p>\n
I watched the woman write it down.<\/p>\n
It was a small moment.<\/p>\n
It mattered.<\/p>\n
At home, Sarah noticed I was sleeping better.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re not checking your phone every five minutes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m trying not to.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDoes it feel different?\u201d<\/p>\n
I considered it.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was still worried about money.<\/p>\n
I was still learning a new job.<\/p>\n
