7 – The House, the Condominium, and the Price of Keeping a Family Secret

The first settlement discussion took place several weeks later.

My attorney explained the options.

We could continue with the lawsuit.

We could negotiate repayment.

We could ask the court to preserve the condominium interest while the case continued.

I listened.

I asked questions.

I took notes.

I did not ask whether Mom would forgive me.

I did not ask whether Vanessa would speak to me again.

Those questions no longer seemed relevant.

The money had been taken.

The records showed where it went.

The court would decide what happened next.

My attorney said the other side had begun producing documents.

Some of them confirmed what we already knew.

Others showed that the financial problems were worse than my family had admitted.

The condominium had been purchased with money that passed through several accounts.

The property was not an innocent mistake.

It had been part of a plan.

I sat quietly while he explained the records.

I had suspected that.

But hearing it confirmed was different.

The next time Mom called, I answered.

She said she wanted to talk about the house.

I asked whether she had spoken to her attorney.

She said she had.

She said the mortgage was current.

I asked how.

She said she had borrowed money.

I waited.

She said she had refinanced the house.

I looked down at my notes.

For years, she had told me the house was in danger.

Now she had found a way to keep it.

I asked whether she understood that the money she had received from me had been used for other things.

She said she had not known everything Vanessa was doing.

I asked whether she had known about the ring.

She was quiet.

Then she said she had helped Vanessa.

I asked whether she had known about the condominium.

She said it had been an investment.

I asked whether she had known about the money that came from my account.

She did not answer.

I waited.

Finally, she said, "I thought you could afford it."

I closed my eyes.

That was the sentence she had used at the wedding.

The sentence she had said while smiling at the guests.

I had heard it before.

I had heard it in every request.

I had heard it in every emergency.

I had heard it in every promise that I would be repaid.

I had never understood how much it meant.

It meant that my ability to earn money had become more important than my right to decide what happened to it.

I told her I could not continue the conversation.

She asked whether I would forgive her.

I said I did not know.

Then I hung up.

The next week, my attorney told me that the records supported a repayment agreement.

Mom had agreed to return most of the money.

The remaining amount would be paid through a court-enforced schedule.

Interest would be included.

Vanessa's condominium interest would be transferred as part of the settlement.

I listened to the terms.

I did not feel happy.

I did not feel like I had won.

I felt as though I had finally been allowed to put something down.

The process was not finished.

There were still documents to sign.

There were still deadlines.

There were still questions about the money that had moved through Vanessa's company.

But the central issue was no longer being denied.

The money had been taken.

And it was going to be returned.

Source: <a
