I've been listening to her do it for eight years."

He didn't answer.

I waited.

I wanted him to understand that this wasn't about one sentence.

It was about the years of being expected to help.

The years of being the person who was always available.

The years of pretending that it didn't bother me.

"Mom, I think you're making too much of it."

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The same excuse I had heard so many times.

I was too sensitive.

I was making a fuss.

I should let it go.

I should be grateful that everyone had enjoyed dinner.

I looked at the kitchen table.

The same table where I had helped Derek with his homework.

The same table where I had paid bills after Leonard died.

The same table where I had sat alone the night before, trying to understand why I felt so hurt.

"Derek, why didn't you say something when she made that comment?"

He was quiet.

Then he asked, "What was I supposed to say?"

I stared at the phone.

I couldn't believe he had asked me that.

"You could have reminded everyone that I'm more than the woman who cooks your meals."

He exhaled.

"Mom, it was a joke."

"It didn't feel like one."

He began explaining that Cassandra hadn't intended to hurt me.

I listened.

I had spent years listening to people explain why something they had done shouldn't have bothered me.

I was tired.

I didn't want another explanation.

"Maybe I've been making this smaller than it is for too long."

He went quiet.

Then he asked the question that told me exactly what he was thinking.

"So who's supposed to handle Christmas?"

I sat down.

I looked at the table.

I looked at the toast.

I looked at the empty chair where Leonard used to sit.

"Derek, you're forty years old. You have a wife, a kitchen, and a grocery store ten minutes from your house. I'm sure you'll manage."

He didn't answer.

I could hear him breathing.

Then he said he would call later.

I told him I would be home.

We hung up.

I sat there for a long time.

I felt sad.

I also felt relieved.

I had finally said something I had been afraid to say for years.

And the world hadn't ended.

That afternoon, I called Joanna.

She was thirty-seven and worked as a physical therapist in Durham.

She had always encouraged me to travel.

She had been the one who told me I should go to New Zealand alone.

She had been the one who helped me choose a suitcase.

She had been the one who reminded me that I was allowed to enjoy my retirement.

I told her about Thanksgiving.

I told her about Cassandra's joke.

I told her about Derek looking down at his plate.

Then I told her about Portugal.

There was a long silence.

I thought the call had dropped.

Then she said, "Mom, you actually booked it?"

I laughed.

"I did."

She sounded delighted.

"That's wonderful!"

I told her I was nervous.

I had never been away for eight weeks before.

I had never spent Christmas in another country.

I had never been so far from my grandchildren for so long.

Joanna reminded me that I had traveled alone before.

"You went to New Zealand by yourself, remember?"

"I remember."

"And you were fine."

I smiled.

"I was."

She paused.

Then she said something that stayed with me.

"Mom, you spent my whole childhood telling me I could do things even when they scared me. I think it's time you listened to yourself."

I looked at the reservation confirmation.

I felt something loosen inside me.

I had spent so many years telling my children to be brave.

I had forgotten that I could be brave too.

After we hung up, I opened my bank statements again.

I wasn't trying to punish Derek.

I wasn't trying to make his life difficult.

I simply needed to know where my money was going.

I began writing down every payment I had been making.

The subscriptions.

The storage unit.

The regular transfers.

The little expenses that had become part of my monthly routine.

I added them carefully.

Then I prepared an email.

I explained that I would continue paying through the current billing cycle.

Beginning in January, Derek and Cassandra would need to take responsibility for those costs themselves.

I read the email twice.

Then I sent it.

Derek replied that evening.

"Why are you changing everything all of a sudden?"

I looked at the message.

I wanted to tell him that nothing had changed all of a sudden.

I had simply stopped pretending.

Instead, I wrote:

"I need to organize my retirement around my own plans. I hope you understand."

He didn't respond.

Two days later, Cassandra sent me a message.

It was a Christmas menu.

Sixteen guests.

Turkey.

Ham.

Mashed potatoes.

Stuffing.

Vegetables.

Rolls.

Three desserts.

My name appeared beside almost every dish.

At the bottom, she had written that she could pick up anything I needed.

I read the message twice.

Then I set the phone down.

I had already told Derek I wouldn't be cooking.

I had already told Cassandra I was going away.

Yet somehow, she had still managed to make a plan that depended on me.

I picked up the phone.

"Cassandra, I won't be preparing Christmas dinner this year. I've booked an extended trip and will be out of the country."

Her reply came immediately.

"Out of the country?"

"Yes. I'm going to Portugal."

"At Christmas?"

"Yes."

"But we've already invited everyone!"

I looked at the message.

I didn't feel angry.

I felt tired.

"I'm sure you'll still have a lovely gathering. You'll just need to make different arrangements for the food."

She didn't answer.

That evening, Derek called.

He sounded confused.

"Why didn't you tell us you were thinking about doing something like that?"

I looked at the suitcase in the corner of my bedroom.

I hadn't packed it yet.

But I had already begun imagining what it would feel like to leave.

"Because every time I mentioned traveling, someone needed me to watch the dog, help with a project, or be available for something. I got tired of waiting for a convenient time."

He said they would have worked something out.

Maybe they would have.

But I had spent too many years waiting for that.

I told him I would visit the grandchildren before leaving.

I wanted them to understand that I loved them.

I didn't want them to think that my trip had anything to do with them.

"I want to keep being their grandmother, Derek. I just don't want that to mean I'm permanently on call."

He didn't argue.

I spent the following week arranging travel insurance, checking my passport, and preparing my house for an extended absence.

My neighbor Ellen agreed to collect the mail and water my plants.

When I told her about Portugal, she looked delighted.

"Eight weeks? Diane, that's wonderful!"

I laughed.

I wasn't sure I believed it yet.

But I was beginning to.

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Son Came to Say Goodbye Before I Left, But the Conversation We Had at My Kitchen Table Changed More Than Either of Us Expected

The next morning, Derek called while I was making toast.
