I kept putting it off because I thought there would be a better time."

He didn't answer.

I continued.

"For years, I've arranged my days around what you and Cassandra needed. I did it because I love you. But somewhere along the way, you both started assuming my time belonged to you."

He looked up.

"I never meant to make you feel that way."

I believed him.

That was the difficult part.

I didn't think Derek had deliberately set out to take advantage of me.

He had simply become accustomed to having me available.

He had become accustomed to my help.

And I had become accustomed to giving it.

"I know you didn't. Tomorrow, go out for coffee. You'll feel better."

I thanked her.

Then I stood in the doorway and watched her walk away.

The house was quiet.

I put my suitcase beside the bed.

I opened the shutters.

The courtyard was small.

There were flowers beside the wall.

A little table stood near the window.

I could hear footsteps in the street.

Someone was speaking in Portuguese.

A door closed.

Then everything became quiet again.

I sat down.

I had no dinner to prepare.

No dishes to wash.

No one waiting for me to answer a question.

For the first time in years, tomorrow contained no list of responsibilities.

I wasn't sure what to do with that feeling.

But I wanted to find out.

Source: lessoninlife.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Arrived in Portugal Expecting to Feel Alone, But the Quiet Little House Taught Me Something My Family Had Never Understood

Three days before my flight, Derek arrived unexpectedly.
