10 – When Christmas Finally Arrived, I Learned That a Family Could Gather Around a Table Without One Person Carrying the Entire Burden

Christmas morning was cold.

I woke up early and made coffee.

The house was quiet.

I looked at the watercolor in the hallway.

The little street in Óbidos.

The blue shutters.

The flowers.

I smiled.

I had brought that painting home with me.

But I had also brought home something more important.

I had brought home the knowledge that I could make choices for myself.

I could travel.

I could rest.

I could say no.

And I could still love my family.

I prepared the dish I had promised to bring.

It was a simple casserole.

I packed it carefully.

Then I drove to Derek's house.

When I arrived, the children were already running around.

Cassandra opened the door.

"Merry Christmas!"

"Merry Christmas."

She took the casserole from me.

Then she smiled.

"I made the stuffing."

I followed her into the kitchen.

The turkey was in the oven.

The vegetables were ready.

The table was almost set.

Derek was carrying a stack of plates.

He looked at me.

"Mom, can you help me with these?"

I smiled.

"Of course."

I took half the plates.

We carried them to the dining room.

Then I sat down.

I didn't start cleaning the counters.

I didn't check the oven.

I didn't ask whether anything else needed to be done.

I simply sat.

The children came over.

They wanted to show me their presents.

One had received a new bicycle.

The other had received a set of art supplies.

I asked whether I could see them.

They were delighted.

We spent the next few minutes looking at the gifts.

Then Cassandra called everyone to the table.

The meal was simple.

The turkey was good.

The stuffing was a little dry.

The casserole was warm.

The children talked about school.

Derek asked about my painting.

Cassandra asked whether I had decided where to travel next.

I told them I was thinking about Scotland.

Everyone seemed pleased.

I looked around the table.

For years, I had spent Christmas making sure everyone else had what they needed.

I had stood in the kitchen.

I had served the food.

I had washed the dishes.

I had gone home tired.

This time, I was sitting down.

I was eating.

I was laughing.

I was enjoying the people I loved.

And I wasn't exhausted.

After dinner, Derek began clearing the table.

Cassandra helped.

The children carried their plates to the kitchen.

I stayed in the dining room.

I watched them.

It felt strange.

It also felt right.

A little later, Derek came over.

"Mom, do you want some coffee?"

I smiled.

"Yes, please."

He brought me a cup.

Then he sat beside me.

We talked about the children.

We talked about work.

We talked about the trip to Scotland.

He asked whether I had decided when I wanted to go.

I told him I was still looking at dates.

He nodded.

"Let me know when you book it."

I smiled.

"I will."

He looked at me for a moment.

Then he said, "I'm glad you're doing this."

I looked at him.

"Doing what?"

"Living your life."

I felt tears rise in my eyes.

I hadn't expected that.

I looked down at my coffee.

For years, I had wanted my son to understand that I was more than the person who cooked his meals.

Now he seemed to understand.

Not perfectly.

Not completely.

But enough.

I reached over and touched his hand.

"Thank you, sweetheart."

He smiled.

Then he stood up and went to help Cassandra in the kitchen.

I sat there for a few minutes.

I listened to the children laughing.

I looked at the Christmas tree.

I thought about Leonard.

I wished he could have seen us.

I wished he could have sat at the table.

I wished he could have watched Derek carry the plates.

I wished he could have seen me sitting quietly with my coffee.

But I knew he would have been happy.

He had always wanted me to enjoy my life.

And I finally was.

When I drove home that evening, I felt peaceful.

The roads were quiet.

The lights from the houses passed by.

I thought about the Christmases I had spent cooking for everyone.

I thought about the Christmas I had spent in Portugal.

I thought about the Christmas I had just shared with my family.

They were all different.

But they all mattered.

I had learned that love didn't have to mean sacrifice.

It could mean sharing.

It could mean listening.

It could mean allowing other people to carry their own responsibilities.

And sometimes, it could mean sitting down and enjoying a cup of coffee while someone else washed the dishes.

That was the kind of family I wanted.

And I believed we were finally learning how to become one.

Source: <a
