A few weeks after Christmas, Derek invited me to lunch.<\/p>\n
He suggested a little restaurant near my house.<\/p>\n
I agreed.<\/p>\n
When I arrived, he was already sitting at a table beside the window.<\/p>\n
He stood up when he saw me.<\/p>\n
"Hi, Mom."<\/p>\n
"Hello, sweetheart."<\/p>\n
We hugged.<\/p>\n
Then we sat down.<\/p>\n
He had ordered coffee.<\/p>\n
I ordered tea.<\/p>\n
For a few minutes, we talked about ordinary things.<\/p>\n
The weather.<\/p>\n
The children.<\/p>\n
My plans for Scotland.<\/p>\n
Then Derek became quiet.<\/p>\n
I looked at him.<\/p>\n
"What's on your mind?"<\/p>\n
He took a breath.<\/p>\n
"I've been thinking about Thanksgiving again."<\/p>\n
I put down my cup.<\/p>\n
I knew what he was going to say.<\/p>\n
But I wanted him to say it.<\/p>\n
He looked at me.<\/p>\n
"I should have defended you."<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
"Yes."<\/p>\n
He looked down at the table.<\/p>\n
"I knew Cassie had hurt you. I just didn't want to make things uncomfortable."<\/p>\n
I waited.<\/p>\n
He continued.<\/p>\n
"I thought you would let it go. I thought you would understand."<\/p>\n
I felt the old hurt rise.<\/p>\n
But this time, I didn't feel overwhelmed by it.<\/p>\n
I had already spent months thinking about what had happened.<\/p>\n
I had already said what I needed to say.<\/p>\n
I had already made changes in my life.<\/p>\n
I looked at him.<\/p>\n
"I did understand, Derek. I understood that you were uncomfortable. But I was uncomfortable too."<\/p>\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n
"I know."<\/p>\n
He looked at me.<\/p>\n
"I'm sorry."<\/p>\n
The words were simple.<\/p>\n
But they mattered.<\/p>\n
I had wanted to hear them for a long time.<\/p>\n
I reached across the table and touched his hand.<\/p>\n
"Thank you."<\/p>\n
He looked relieved.<\/p>\n
Then he said something I hadn't expected.<\/p>\n
"I think I got used to you always being there."<\/p>\n
I smiled sadly.<\/p>\n
"I think you did."<\/p>\n
He shook his head.<\/p>\n
"I didn't realize how much you were doing for us."<\/p>\n
I told him that I had never helped because I expected anything in return.<\/p>\n
I had helped because I loved him.<\/p>\n
But I also told him that love didn't mean I had to keep doing everything.<\/p>\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n
"I understand that now."<\/p>\n
I looked at him.<\/p>\n
I hoped he did.<\/p>\n
But I also knew that understanding was something we would have to practice.<\/p>\n
It wasn't enough to say the right words once.<\/p>\n
We would have to keep making different choices.<\/p>\n
We would have to keep respecting each other's time.<\/p>\n
We would have to keep learning how to ask for help without assuming it would be given.<\/p>\n
That was how relationships changed.<\/p>\n
Not through one dramatic moment.<\/p>\n
Through ordinary decisions.<\/p>\n
Derek asked whether I would be willing to help with the grandchildren during spring break.<\/p>\n
I thought about it.<\/p>\n
I wanted to spend time with them.<\/p>\n
I also wanted to keep my plans.<\/p>\n
So I told him I could help for two afternoons.<\/p>\n
He smiled.<\/p>\n
"That would be great."<\/p>\n
I felt good about the answer.<\/p>\n
I had chosen to help.<\/p>\n
I hadn't felt pressured.<\/p>\n
I hadn't felt guilty.<\/p>\n
I had simply made a decision.<\/p>\n
After lunch, we walked outside.<\/p>\n
The air was cold.<\/p>\n
The sky was clear.<\/p>\n
Derek hugged me before we said goodbye.<\/p>\n
"Thanks for talking with me, Mom."<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
"Thank you for listening."<\/p>\n
I drove home.<\/p>\n
I thought about the years I had spent trying to make everyone happy.<\/p>\n
I thought about how often I had ignored my own needs.<\/p>\n
I thought about the woman I had become in Portugal.<\/p>\n
I was still a mother.<\/p>\n
I was still a grandmother.<\/p>\n
I was still someone who loved cooking for people.<\/p>\n
But I was also a woman who had learned to protect her own time.<\/p>\n
That mattered.<\/p>\n
I went inside.<\/p>\n
I made tea.<\/p>\n
I sat beside the window.<\/p>\n
I looked at the little watercolor hanging in the hallway.<\/p>\n
The blue shutters.<\/p>\n
The crooked street.<\/p>\n
The flowers.<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
I had brought that painting home from Portugal.<\/p>\n
But the lesson had come home with me too.<\/p>\n
I didn't have to earn my place in my family by making myself useful.<\/p>\n
I already belonged.<\/p>\n
And that was enough.<\/p>\n
