We'll figure something out."

I smiled.

That was it.

No argument.

No guilt.

No disappointment.

He simply made another arrangement.

I sat there for a moment.

I thought about how difficult it had once been for me to say no.

I thought about how much I had feared that my family would stop loving me if I wasn't always available.

Now I understood that love could survive a little inconvenience.

It could survive a change of plans.

It could survive a mother who wanted to travel.

It could survive a grandmother who had her own life.

I went back to painting.

The watercolor was coming along.

It showed the little courtyard in Portugal.

The white walls.

The blue shutters.

The terracotta pots.

The small table.

I had painted it from memory.

It wasn't perfect.

But I loved it.

I thought about the first time I had sat in that courtyard.

I had felt nervous.

I had felt guilty.

I had wondered whether I had made a mistake.

Now I knew that I hadn't.

I had needed that trip.

I had needed the quiet.

I had needed the space.

I had needed to remember that I was a person outside my family's needs.

I still loved my family.

I still wanted to spend time with them.

I still wanted to cook for them sometimes.

But I no longer believed that I had to give up my own life to prove that love.

That was the lesson Thanksgiving had taught me.

Not that my son was a bad person.

Not that my daughter-in-law was cruel.

Not that family was something to walk away from.

It had taught me that even loving families could fall into patterns that hurt people.

And that those patterns could change.

If someone was willing to speak honestly.

If someone was willing to listen.

If someone was willing to make different choices.

I looked at the painting.

The blue shutters were still crooked.

The flowers were uneven.

The little street leaned slightly to the left.

I smiled.

It was exactly how I wanted it.

A few days later, I visited Derek and Cassandra.

The children were playing in the backyard.

Cassandra was making coffee.

Derek was setting up the grill.

I sat at the table.

Nobody asked me to prepare anything.

Nobody handed me a list.

Nobody assumed I would take over.

I watched the children run around.

I listened to Cassandra talk about work.

I listened to Derek tell a story about something that had happened at the office.

I laughed.

I enjoyed the afternoon.

When it was time to leave, Cassandra walked me to the door.

She hugged me.

"Have a good trip to Scotland."

I smiled.

"Thank you."

She looked at me.

"Send us pictures."

"I will."

I drove home.

The sun was beginning to set.

I thought about Thanksgiving.

I thought about the woman who had driven three hours to cook dinner for twelve people.

I thought about the woman who had sat at the table while her daughter-in-law laughed.

I thought about the woman who had looked at her son and waited for him to defend her.

I thought about the woman who had gone home and booked eight weeks in Portugal.

That woman had been hurt.

She had been tired.

She had been afraid.

But she had also been brave.

She had finally decided that her life mattered.

And that decision had changed everything.

I didn't know exactly what the future would bring.

I didn't know whether I would cook Christmas dinner next year.

I didn't know where I would travel after Scotland.

I didn't know how much my family would continue to change.

But I knew one thing.

I would never again confuse being loved with being needed.

I would never again believe that my worth depended on how much I could do for other people.

I would never again wait for someone else to give me permission to enjoy my own life.

I was sixty-four years old.

I had raised my children.

I had loved my husband.

I had worked hard.

I had saved.

I had traveled.

I had learned.

I had made mistakes.

And I still had so much life ahead of me.

I went inside.

I made tea.

I sat beside the window.

I looked at the watercolor of the little street in Óbidos.

Then I opened my notebook.

At the top of a clean page, I wrote:

"Places I Still Want to See."

I smiled.

There were so many.

And for the first time in a very long time, I wasn't waiting for the right moment.

I was making it.

Source: <a
