I figured I'd come home."

Come home.

Those two words sounded almost funny.

Four months earlier, he had decided our home wasn't good enough for him.

Now, apparently, it was good enough again.

"And you're telling me this because?"

He gave me the familiar smile I'd seen thousands of times during our marriage.

The smile that usually meant he expected me to stop asking questions.

"Come on, Deb. We've been married for twenty-two years."

I looked at him.

"That's an interesting thing to remember now."

His smile disappeared for a second.

Then he laughed.

He always laughed when he didn't want to answer something.

"Don't start. I've had a terrible few weeks."

I wondered whether he heard himself.

A terrible few weeks.

That was how he described the consequences of leaving his wife for another woman.

I stepped aside slightly, but I didn't invite him in.

He looked past me toward the kitchen.

"So, what's for dinner?"

I almost smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn't believe he was serious.

"Whatever you manage to cook at wherever you're staying tonight."

He chuckled.

He actually thought I was teasing him.

Then he pulled one suitcase closer to the doorway.

"Come on, help me with these bags."

I folded my arms.

"Did she pack everything for you?"

"Yes."

"How considerate of her."

He frowned.

"What?"

"I would have charged you for the packing service."

That finally made him understand that something was different.

He placed the suitcase down.

"Look, I know I made a mistake."

I waited.

He didn't continue.

So I asked him the obvious question.

"Which mistake?"

He sighed.

"Leaving. All of it. I should never have let things get this far."

I studied his face.

Four months ago, those words would have meant everything to me.

I would have wanted to hear them more than almost anything.

Back then, I had spent countless nights wondering whether Gary would ever regret leaving.

I had cried in the bedroom.

I had cried while washing dishes.

I had even cried when I found one of his old coffee mugs in the back of a cupboard.

It was ridiculous, really.

Twenty-two years of marriage had made ordinary things feel important.

His chair at the kitchen table.

His shoes beside the door.

The sound of his keys landing on the counter.

When he left, all those small things became reminders that someone was missing.

And I had spent weeks blaming myself for missing him.

But time had done something I hadn't expected.

It had given me room to see my life without him.

I had started taking accounting classes.

I had changed things around the house.

I had repainted the kitchen cabinets.

Blue.

Gary hated blue.

I had chosen it anyway.

That decision had seemed small when I made it.

Now, standing in front of him, I realized it had meant more than I knew.

I was learning to make decisions without wondering whether Gary would approve.

I was learning that being alone wasn't the same as being unhappy.

And I was learning something else.

I didn't need him to come back to prove that I had been worth staying for.

"Debbie?"

His voice interrupted my thoughts.

"What?"

He looked irritated.

"I said I want things to go back to normal."

I glanced at his suitcases.

"Normal?"

"Yes. We can put all this behind us."

I wondered how he imagined that would happen.

Would we simply unpack his clothes?

Would I wash his golf shirts?

Would he sit at the kitchen table and complain about the food?

Would we pretend he hadn't spent four months building a life with someone else?

I looked at him for another moment.

Then I smiled.

"Do you want a proper welcome home?"

His entire face changed.

He brightened so quickly that I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

"Now you're talking."

He lifted the suitcase handle again.

"See? I knew you'd understand."

"Give me five minutes."

I stepped back inside and closed the door.

Not completely.

Just enough to make sure he couldn't follow me.

Then I picked up my phone.

There was one person I needed to call.

Linda.

My neighbor had been beside me through much of the last four months.

She had listened when I needed to talk.

She had helped me with things I couldn't manage alone.

And she knew exactly what I had decided to do if Gary ever appeared at my door again.

She answered quickly.

"Debbie?"

"Linda, remember what we discussed?"

There was a pause.

Then she understood.

"Don't tell me he's there."

I looked through the glass beside the front door.

Gary was standing on the porch, smiling at his reflection in the window.

Two suitcases.

Golf clubs.

One very confident man.

"He's here."

Linda made a small sound.

"You're joking."

"I'm not."

"What does he want?"

I lowered my voice.

"Apparently, he's moving back in."

Linda was quiet for a second.

Then she laughed.

Not an unkind laugh.

More like someone who couldn't believe the situation had finally happened.

"Debbie, is he really standing there with all his belongings?"

"Every last one of them."

"And he thinks you're going to let him in?"

I looked at the door.

"That's what he thinks."

Linda took a breath.

"All right. I'm coming."

I thanked her and ended the call.

For a moment, I remained in the hallway.

My hand was resting against the wall.

I could hear Gary moving around outside.

He was probably wondering why five minutes had become longer than he expected.

I thought about the woman I had been four months earlier.

The woman who had watched her husband pack his belongings.

The woman who had begged herself not to ask him to stay.

The woman who had believed that losing him meant losing everything.

I wished I could tell her something.

I wished I could tell her that the house would still feel like home.

That she would laugh again.

That she would eventually stop checking her phone.

But most of all, I wished I could tell her that one day Gary would return.

And she wouldn't want him.

I opened the door again.

He turned immediately.

"Finally."

His eyes moved toward the hallway.

"I was beginning to think you'd forgotten about me."

I looked at the two suitcases.

"No, Gary. I haven't forgotten."

He smiled.

He still didn't understand.

And I was beginning to realize that he had never understood me nearly as well as he believed.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: My Neighbor Asked One Unexpected Question About His New Girlfriend, and Suddenly His Story About Coming Home Didn’t Sound So Simple

I used to believe that if someone shared twenty-two years of your life, they couldn't become a stranger overnight.
