showed the planned evacuation corridor.

Her finger traced the route.

Then she stopped.

The rescue team had entered from the east.

But the original evacuation plan showed them coming from the west.

She stared at the map.

Something was wrong.

She pulled out her old notebook.

She had kept it for years without knowing why.

Inside were fragments of dates, names, medication dosages, and observations from the operation.

Near the back was a sentence she had written in a hurry.

West corridor blocked before blast.

She read it twice.

Then she called Calloway.

He answered on the second ring.

“You’re awake.”

“I was about to say the same thing.”

“What did you find?”

“I found a problem with the map.”

There was silence.

“Which map?”

“The evacuation plan.”

Calloway exhaled.

“I wondered if you’d notice.”

Nora sat down.

“You already knew.”

“I suspected.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“No.”

She turned the notebook toward the lamp.

“The west corridor was blocked before the second explosion.”

“Yes.”

“The official report says it collapsed afterward.”

“Yes.”

“Then the report is wrong.”

“Yes.”

Nora felt anger rising.

Not fear.

Anger.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know who had altered the report.”

“And now?”

“Now I know one name.”

Nora waited.

Calloway gave it.

The name meant nothing to her at first.

Then she remembered it from the hospital.

A consultant’s name on one of Calloway’s transfer documents.

Her stomach dropped.

“He treated you overseas.”

“Yes.”

“He was involved in the old investigation.”

“Yes.”

“And he had access to your medical history.”

“Yes.”

Nora stood.

“Calloway.”

“I know.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying we should be careful.”

The next morning, Nora arrived at work early.

She went directly to medical records.

The clerk looked surprised to see her.

“Can I help you?”

“I need General Calloway’s original admission record.”

“That requires authorization.”

“I know.”

Nora produced the authorization.

The clerk checked it twice.

Then disappeared into the records room.

When she returned, she handed Nora a sealed packet.

Nora opened it in a private office.

The first pages were ordinary.

Vitals.

Medications.

Transfer notes.

Then she found a discrepancy.

The medication that had nearly triggered Calloway’s cardiac crisis had been ordered before the infectious disease team had reviewed his overseas records.

That alone wasn’t impossible.

But the ordering physician’s electronic signature appeared at a time when the physician was documented as being in another hospital.

Nora photographed the page with her phone.

Then she stopped.

Someone was standing outside the glass.

Victor Hale.

He knocked.

Nora opened the door.

“What are you doing?”

“Reviewing records.”

“You’re not authorized.”

“I am.”

Victor looked at the packet.

“What are you looking for?”

“The truth.”

His face tightened.

“That word gets people into trouble.”

“It also keeps people alive.”

He looked away.

“You need to leave this alone.”

Nora stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because you’re not trained for this.”

“I was trained for worse.”

Victor’s expression changed.

For the first time, she saw something close to fear.

Not fear of her.

Fear of what she might uncover.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.”

“Then explain it.”

He didn’t.

He walked away.

Nora watched him disappear around the corner.

Her phone buzzed.

Calloway.

She answered.

“Are you alone?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

His voice was quieter than before.

“Someone accessed my hospital records last night.”

Nora looked at the packet.

“Victor just told me to leave it alone.”

A pause.

“Then we have a problem.”

She felt the room grow colder.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Nothing.”

“That isn’t happening.”

“I know.”

There was something almost amused in his voice.

“Meet me tonight.”

“Where?”

“Not the café.”

“Where?”

He gave her an address.

An old military archive on the edge of the city.

Nora recognized the building.

She had been there once.

Years ago.

The same night she received notice that her commendation had been denied.

She remembered the hallway.

The locked office.

The man who told her not to ask questions.

Her pulse quickened.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why there?”

“Because that’s where the missing file was stored.”

Nora looked down at the packet.

“Calloway.”

“Yes?”

“If this is what I think it is…”

“I know.”

“If someone altered the report…”

“I know.”

“And if the hospital records were changed…”

“I know.”

Nora closed her eyes.

The old operation had never ended.

It had simply followed them into the present.

That evening, she drove toward the archive.

She parked two blocks away.

Calloway was waiting near the entrance.

He looked at her car.

“You really brought it.”

“I told you.”

“It sounds worse than I remember.”

She smiled despite herself.

Then the smile disappeared.

The archive door was unlocked.

Calloway noticed.

“So it begins.”

Nora stepped inside.

Dust hung in the air.

The hallway lights flickered.

Somewhere deeper inside the building, a door closed.

Neither of them moved.

Then Calloway whispered, “We’re not alone.”
